2012 i left my dad's place, was homeless for 8 months, saved money to get good cloths got a job in a contact center, stayed there for 2 years. I saved enough money to get a house and a computer. im a graphics designer dropout but i belong to a family of artist, illustrators and designers and i had it in my blood too. so i got adobe photoshop and illustrator and started freelancing in several websites, i used to do logos for somewhere between $10-60 if i got a $80 logo that was a fortune for me. took me 2 more years of studying and learning EVERYDAY none stop, i mean i was eating and breathing design. NOW ive got built a rag tag team of web dev, animators and editors, and i actually owe it to you Chris, because on one of your vid i learned what it takes to build a team, how to bid, how to get clients etc.. from a $10 logo to a $5000 brand design.
Thanks :D I enjoy every moment of it, i never thought i could live a life like this until now. its indescribable. I talk to my friends and family about it and none of them understand.
Amazing! Is is true? Why to leave dad's home? You know, I came to the USA in February, without money, living in my uncle's home till now. Working at Target and commuting by bicycle. But family are moving so I need to change job place. And I want to move directly to Minneapolis and live by myself. But I understand that it will be hard to survive working at some store and paying for rent. In a free time I should do web design and development (junior level now) but not so much power to do it.
Yup. Couldn't have said it better myself. That quote hit home for me, so I hit "subscribed" to this channel haha. But seriously tho, I appreciate the part describing the details of his struggles, during the "dark times", it's important for folks to understand it's not all sunshine & rainbows to do a startup
I'm a fan of the "MVP" approach to graphic design. It saves you so much time and you get the same amount of feedback from the client upon presentation. It's a good way to test if you're on the right track or not, before spending hours creating a flawless mock-up that's nowhere near what the client wants.
I have seen so many start up interviews, and this by far is the best I've ever seen. I love that they hit the dark areas and even go into sacrifices in order to make something big. This really opens my eyes into building a business or just something that helps the community.
This topic is something that I always wanted to hear from start ups, because you mentioned the word "entrepreneur" has been romanticized and as a millennial it bothered me just hearing all the non-stop glam of start ups without the real struggle. I'm so happy that I have found this channel. Y'all have provided such great content and I appreciate what y'all are doing. Keep up the hard work!
Glad I found this channel, too. Are you kin to this fella Chau? I see your first name is Charles though. Chau is a creative pioneer for the start up. I learned a lot here in a few minutes. Looks like he makes good plans, has a good vision and knows how to make the hard decisions. School of hard knocks and not so much "college".....just genius. I love how Chris always move around the outer scenes of the story and ask the question to identify clearly of it. He is truly a great observer, listener and probably a great executioner. Sometimes, i wanna meet him so much to talk in person and let him read about everything and myself included.
deeym. I just dropped out of college this semester because of similar reason like he has and I really see that going through college is not the only way to "SUCCESS" and I know there are a lot of methods to be a successful individual someday. maybe each of us has a different understanding or ways to interpret success but as long as we're happy with the results of the decision we made for our future, I think it's enough. I'm pursuing graphic design and web development as of now and I know the road is going to be extremely difficult but I believe I can cross the road at the end. Thankfully I found this gem, this channel and especially this episode.
this interview was AMAZING!!! I DROPPED OUT TO ..BEST DECISION I EVER MADE! thanks for talking about what it takes...i loved the personalities of both of you on the show!
love to see startups succeed and evolve. This guys is brilliant and has something going. we need to see more content like this. thanks for this interview!
Well organized and awesome advice. I'm so glad I found your channel. You're helping me learn more in 4 hours of watching videos than I'm learning in 2 years of design higher education. Thanks!
How does this not have more views?! Best video I've seen on RU-vid yet. Amazing feel to the demeanor of both participants. Asked the best questions and carried through potentially awkward topics with great poise. Exceptional interviewing skills. This channel needs to be much more publicized. Chris this is the first video I've ever seen you do and it's remarkably impressive. I'm also located in the Los Angeles area. How do I get a hold of you. I'd love to help further your cause and evangelize this great work you're doing I can already think of 3 key and influential people who help me in my life who needs to see this video. Content is valuable and powerful. Great questions. Chemistry and energy from interview is very rare and hard to find. Reminds me of Kevin from foundation but strongly comes back from potentially awkward topics with much more finesse. Job well done! Congrats
OK, I love all of your videos... but, starting today, out of all The Futur videos I have watched, this one has changed the course of my art career. I know I am a talented artist. Though, clearly my entrepreneurial skills are weak. I have tried and failed to create a sustainable income as an artist because I never solved the needs of the buyer. Which is the take away here, for me; finding the problem to solve and filling it. A thousand thanks for all that you do, Chris!
I enjoy listening to those talks, please keep it coming. btw do you have a video on the channel about how to get sponsors for your startup and how to actually make money from your startup ?? cause i searched and i didnt find one.
I do know the lonely feeling. It's a lot less now. I've been building resilience and getting more and more practice and it's becoming more routine. Love what Chris said about the positive frequencies!
Long story but perseverance is a good gene to carry. People have gone from my team and now people are coming back. I took two months off and came back with that burn again. I'm focused and I'm studying more again. Making good calculated choices now. I guess I'm not so "green" anymore.
Hey, big fan! Maybe make an episode of different creatives explaining their eureka moments of transitioning from a student or small business into a more successful startup/creatives in terms of technicalities, planning and et cetera. It might be interesting to dive into the different stories that they have to offer, this will give your varied viewers high possibility to relate depending on their positioning & this video is a good example of an in-depth story
This was great! It's great to hear about the tough times in business though. As someone who has been trying to get a small business rolling for the past couple years, there are some REALLY tough times. It's refreshing to hear what struggles others have gone through and to see the success that came after pushing through the tough times. Great interview!
+Chau Nguyen great suggestion. I am definitely trying to do that more and more now. Being around other entrepreneurs is motivating to continue pushing forward. The friends that are working 9-5 and have a steady paycheck can't relate to the struggles and it gets demoralizing at times. Other entrepreneurs push you to your limits and are generally much more optimistic. Couldn't agree more 😊
by far, one of the best interviews I've watched at RU-vid related to the business and entrepreneurial requirements and needs. As a product designer, "coder" and future entrepreneur this was really inspiring and insightful.
Chris = The Hand Chau = The Sponge The Result = all the informative and real life experience juices squeezed out. Too Sweet! Thank you both, too informative this is!
I have always watched your videos, and there's no time I don't learn new things from you guys. I'm so happy coming across you. Thank you "A creative person is someone who connects through the sphere of things"...Chris Do I am creative
Thanks for this inspirational video. I'm not at all into eutrepreneurship, design or tech industry. I'm just a young guy wandering on internet to find inspiration for a new path for my life. I want to be a documentary photographer. What I just watched makes me more confident to pursue my dream. Pursue your dream might be entrepreneurship somehow. This interview reminds me Steve Job's speech at Stanford College. Keep going the great work ! Olivier
definitely one of my favorite channels at the time! love the content! it's so valuable and just great to bring the strategies and thoughts of successful people like chau nyguen, or yourself to us! for free! i wanna thank you for that!
I wondering if he is not the smartest guy in a team, who then?) Chau Nguyen is brilliant and so inspiring! Have no doubt that in 20 years he gonna be the perfect mentor!
I semi Dropped out, I started freelancing my Illustration and Design skills while in college, I have learned so much on my own, but I feel that College is a good first step in finding out if you want to stay in the "system" or break the grid as we designers say. I still take some classes, but I actually do not plan on graduating college, I have been offered Design jobs just based on my Portfolio, which is what really shows you skills and talents. Not a degree. Skool is the new paradigm of education, not a system based on out dated ethos and rhetoric, but real world application and knowledge. Great videos as always.
I had recently been thinking of whether I want to be an entrepeneur and if I have what it akes. Thanks to this video, your positive and practical vibes have been impressed upon me. Amazing Video and my choice is clear
daaaang.... yo, like, for real, i'm tired of working for peanuts and the man since the days of geocities, angelfire, hotdog editor, futuresplash... and like my only friend from then still left is animated gifs. we're so tight brah. but now everything's just right with the best channel on youtube--The Futur. i'm starting my llc right now, thanks to The Futur!
great video, p.s, i love to play long videos like this with not as much visual content but talking going on in the background of me working on design work, but all you guy's videos are super low audio amplitude, so i cant focus on listening and designing at the same time. would appreciate it if you guys dialed it up a bit in editing for future videos
ok. i'm wondering if others are experiencing the same thing. I noticed that spotify and iTunes are super loud compared to podcasts and RU-vid channels. Are you experiencing this while watching other RU-vid content? Do you notice an audio dip when it comes to our shows?
Yah, other YT content is perfectly audible and loud but many videos on the futur channel isnt, same thing happened with the roberto blake interview video and the video where chriss do is doing a talk in a room with students about pricing value of design I keep the sub titles on so i dont miss anything
im loving the start up he created. this is still a major problem the job searching and hiring process is archaic this is thinking of the future, great job! now only if this was for windows phone, sigh...
Started good, "sponsors of our business are visa and MasterCard". But I didn't expect that they have half million dollars of own money. Who know, when somebody have such amount, there is a lot of helpful connections to that time and they see much more opportunities than average person.
i can relate to this guy so much. however I didn't jump to the highest risk opportunity that was offered to me just because i don't see myself profiting from it the same way the other person was. (boss was offering me a partnership) i was offered only 10% of what the company will make granted I don't put out any money. it was also giving me so much stress cause everyone was so against it too that I just let it go.
This was awesome 🔥 you know the feeling you had the first time you heard garyvee? Got that same feeling watching this. Maybe not everyone...but that was my reaction.
Awesome episode, I just recently discovered the futur, so now I have hundreds of older videos to watch like this one from 2016... is it too late to let you guys know that ''Entrepreneur'' is spelled ''Entreprenuer'' at 0:48 ?
Damn this interview was so on point; it's seriously one of the most valuable hour (out of an INSANE amount of hours haha) I've watched on "RU-vid University".
We learned so much in this episode from Chau. He's awesome. I think they will roll this out in the US once they are out of testing. Then, there's nothing holding them back from going global.
True story. After taping this episode, I went home and decided to make a major change in my life/business. Little bits of that change are starting to become more evident.
to go all in. i've been devoting my time to creating content. i don't know if you noticed but the amount of content we are producing has almost doubled.
I see, that's awesome! Did that happen all at once, did you start spending more time to creating content the very next day or did you do it little by little?
College/university is not the only nor the best path to follow anymore, specially in graphic design/web design/marketing field. Mark, Gates and this guy just disqualified a lot of people that have a bachelor or master degree. In the 21st century a degree is not necessary anymore, specially in graphic design/web design/marketing field, a great and solid portfolio is much more valuable than a degree and a degree does not translate into a great portfolio or vice-versa.
Could this maybe be a trick played by the company that hired him in the beginning, to hire him as a VP before hes done with college, to make sure he doesn't leave the company too soon? Because he cant leave without proper experience since now he doesnt have certified education? ...although it worked out well for both parties, I was just wondering maybe if thats what companies try to pursue by hiring young people in college to ensure reduced employee turnover rates...
How can someone without a degree get their first job or an internship a design studio. Many of the places I wanted to apply to required someone to be in school or have a degree to be considered.
Great Interview, highly inspirational !! Chau gives insight to the essentials of entrepreneurial thinking. A true guid to success! Chris Do was the perfect host, great open ended questions and follow-ups. Definitely going to share the link with my friends.
i know lol.. for me im in the same position as the guy interviewed in this video, im learning way more outside of class to the point where im addicted to it, what im learning in school isnt enough, and i got 2-3 more years to go
