Agree. Bought my NH-U12S almost 10 years ago and it’s still compatible with my newest computer with a free socket mount kit directly from their website (also no postage fees at least in the Europe!). It also works and is silent like the day I bought it. They are not cheap but they are woth it in the long term.
I am not even kidding, i just bought all my new parts for my next-gen build INCLUDING the Scythe Fuma 2, and when I saw you initially show the email from scythe, my heart dropped. Thank you so much for clearing everything up and showing that it is actually compatible!
This is actually very helpful and im glad I found this. So what AMD said about am4 cooler compatability was technically true. it just boils down to if Cooler manufacturers required you to replace your Backplate. Building a new PC soon with AM5 so this definitely made me a bit more aware of what I'm doing.
Please got CAN WE PLEASE get one set of mounting methodologies for consumer platforms, one mounting pattern, for ALL consumer platforms. This is mental. There is no need for this, mounting pressure is mounting pressure...
Scythe US put out an article on their website that most of their current coolers (including both versions of the Fuma 2) are compatible with AM5. I used to work for a company with a similar strategy: We were supposed to deny any news until it was official because the decisions in the management were held back from the support team right until the day the official statement went public. So we sent e-mails to customers that something doesn't work at 8:59 AM, the news went live at 9:00 AM, and the support team was officially informed many hours or days later so we had to check the public news in the meantime. So I would never blame the support team of a company.
That answer from Scythe support was strange. I actually wrote to Scythe EU a week ago and got this reply: "The mounting system for AM4 and AM5 is identical. So the Fuma 2 is already completely compatible to AM5. "
@@chopholtz4950 i wrote to arctic since they also claim their cooler (freezer 34 esports duo) is compatible with AM5, but it requires a custom backplate, and they said that it is compatible because the dimensions are the same for am4 and am5, and they didnt know about this backplate not being removable thing.
Thanks a lot Mike, just what I was waiting for. Hopefully you'll also find the time to actually check which line of coolers will be enough to keep the 90°c operating temperature without throttling.
The main takeaway for me from all of this is: Noctua might be slightly more expensive, but they DO NOT fuck you over. I've had an NH-D14 since *2013* for my FX-8350, and they've since then sent me an Intel Xtreme mounting kit, an AM4 mountain kit, and even now an AM5 mounting kit. All free of charge. That in of itself is worth the extra $10-15 to me.
I was worried for a moment there. I bought a fuma 2 rev b a while back because availability of this product in my country is atrocious I bought it before the am5 release. Good to hear that it can be mounted and doing a good job cooling the new chip.
Great video. I believe my techn waterblock should work with am5. It comes with a backplate but the screw threads are identical to the am4/5 backplate and it threaded in no problem. P.S. if you ever wanna truly test mounting pressure, buy some pressure paper, it works incredibly well. I used it when doing my 4690k direct die mounting.
@@HardwareCanucks Hello, do you happen to know if the AIO MSI MAG CORELIQUID 360R V2 would work for the new motherboards? On some sites it says AM5 & AM4 would work. But in other ones it lists and AM5 not there: Block compability: AMD Socket TR4 / sTRX4 / SP3 / AM4 / AM3+ / AM3 / AM2+ / AM2 / FM2+ / FM2 / FM1
@@HardwareCanucks Awesome, looking forward to it! I'm really wondering if something like the noctua nh-d15 will make huge different over an AIO, not a fan of water cooling
That's the one thing I don't like about him. I even got banned from commenting on his videos for calling him out on his excessive clickbait a few years ago :/
I unsubscribed from his channel and haven't seen one of his videos in a while. He ruined the channel with the talking head videos parroting rumors and misinformation as they were facts.
I know Zalman made some excellent low-profile coolers with solid copper heatsinks back in the day. I'd love to see some of those tried out on the new platform!
The thermalright AXP90 is actually compatible with the AM5 mobos with some nuances. The screws are actually small enough to pass through the screw holes of AM5's backplate if you are careful and patient enough. The cooler's backplate then will be able to sit on the existing backplate and then you fasten it up. Works pretty good at least on the B650I.
I really hate that cooler master is charging 5€ for their adapters but charging $20 on Amazon for the same adapters stateside. I just bought a Peerless Assasin 210 for $30. So pissed since the cooler master was such a good cooler.
I have a Fuma 2 (OG) and saw that same post about AM5 not being compatible. Did a search to see if that was BS or not and thank you for putting my worries to bed. You're a hero!
Really nice video, I have the EVO 212 LED and it came with AM4 locking bar to use the existing AM4/AM5 plastic latches, but the issue is that the heatsink must rotate 90 degrees. the EVO you are showing in the video has the same cuttings (grooves) on it's baseplate that makes it do the same to fit on AM5
This doesn't take AIOs into consideration, where there's even more confusion. Corsair have said that all their AM4 AIOs are compatible with the AM5 socket. NZXT on the other hand have said that while their X and Z AIO AM4 brackets fit on an AM5 socket, there are height differences that may result in gaps between the AIO and the CPU. As a result of this, they're supplying AM5-specific brackets to anyone that has an X|Z AIO who also purchased an AM5 motherboard. This isn't some Scythe scam as NZXT are burdening the expense and giving the AM5 brackets out for free. Their reasoning must be legitimate, otherwise, why go through the effort and cost. So, just because an AM4 cooler may fit on the AM5 socket, doesn't mean that the fit will be precise.
The whole point in the extra thick IHS is so the height is that same as AM4. There is no logical reason it shouldn't work if it doesn't need a backplate.
I was told by TT Customer Service for their TH360 ARGB AIO, "You would need to find a way to get that backplate off." since their site didn't have the the hardware needed for AM5 socket... I don't think they've realised that its not supposed to come off.
I got the Deepcool LS720 AIO in White and worked right out of the Box with the AM5 mounting kit that it came with, and it keeps my Ryzen 9 7950X under 60c, its a amazing AIO that Deepcool made with the LS series and affordable.
Super helpful! My 7950X is here, get my X670E Asus ProArt in a few days, and my Noctua will work! The Fractal Torrent case is not kind to my AIO stable, so air coolers are a must, and I am super stoked to migrate off my "ANCIENT" 12900K! 🙂
@@mullison1 I am sure I will buy the 13900k as well. Haven't had. Ryzen since a 3900k. I like the number of PcieE lanes on the AM,5, and I get to try PCIe 5 nvme soon. Intel a bit behind.
@@seannewcomb7594 Finally have my 7950x and ProArt set up. On DaVinci Resolve Pro, renders and timeline performance are 5-10% better than my 12900K system. BUT, not sure vMix or OBS are as good. OBS is showing about 45% CPU utilization, and does drop frames while streaming, same RTX a4000 GPU. vMix is giving me higher CPU nd GPU utilization numbers, perhaps double. So, my only theory is the IGPU in the 7950x is not being used at all, YET! I would imagine some optimization will be needed. I am going to try the Intel 770 16 GB GPU in the former 12900k system, just to get a sense of how well those two Intel parts work in unison.
Scythe put out a news post on the US website on the 29th saying that Fuma 2 and 2 rev b are compatible. My guess is that the reps that work in support simply do not know anything about computers and gave the wrong answers.
Correct. However, a few days ago they also yanked all the "AM5 Compatibility" images and information in the specs from all their existing coolers. They were re-added in the last 24 hours.
When it comes to PC Coolers, Mike is The Man. This will only become MORE important moving forward as these new CPUs are going to be...putting out a lot of heat. Great job...
Came from Reddit to say this was a great video, thanks for explaining it so clearly. AMD made the bad decision of making IHS thicc in order to make AM4 coolers compatible with AM5 in theory, but in practice the compatibility is very limited. I'd rather keep my Deepcool Gammax 400 V2, which uses a custom blackplate, and upgrade to a Ryzen 5000 instead of spending a lot of money on AM5 platform and a new cooler.
Noctua posted on their site: "Noctua confirms AM5 heatsink compatibility and announces free-of-charge upgrades for low-profile coolers and older heatsink models"
lol I was worried about my cooler not being compatible and was starting to take apart my pc while watching this video, then you mentioned the Fuma 2, which is the exact cooler I've got.
3:30 Yes, Jayztwocents said that Noctua coolers aren't compatible which is in stark contradiction to what Noctua themselves stated on their website. Basically, if your Noctua cooler was shipped with the AM4 mounting kit, you're good. If not, you'll need to contact Noctua so they can send you a mounting kit. The only exception being the L9 series coolers which REQUIRE the AM5 mounting kit
Jayz2jokes def got it wrong lol. Noctua sent me an am4 kit for free when i got my x370 board, arrived quickly too. Even though I'm watercooled i still have the kit for my nh-u14s.
Hyper 212 Evo (1st gen) on AM5 is possible I have managed to install my 10-year-old Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo CPU cooler on my new AM5 motherboard. I already had the old AM4 X-shaped movable bracket (RR-AM4B-H212-S1) and I tried to install the cooler with that initially, but I realized that the screw slots on the motherboard were too low to hold the cooler under the bracket. All the comments on the internet said that it’s not possible to install an old cooler on a new AM5 board, but I still wanted to try my luck. So, I bought the AMD AM5 Mounting Kit (603007170-GP) from a local shop (it might be the last one in stock in my whole country), which is basically just 4 screws that lift the original screw slots about 1 cm on the motherboard. It cost no more than 2 USD. I installed the 4 screws first and then the cooler with the X-bracket after a little bit of trial and error. It finally fastened enough without any movement at all. I tried it with some games and stress tests, and the CPU (7500F) temperatures didn’t exceed 77 degrees Celsius..
hey, good video but some additional notes, note every cooler without backplate is compatible, if cooler uses long mount clips, let’s call them “vertical” - it’s ok, but if cooler uses short “horizontal” mount clips it wont fit, because am5 socket is a bit shorter on horizontal mounting place. p.s. sorry if ny english is bad, not my main lang. thanks have a good day everyone
Hello, congratulations for your very useful video. Just one question: what material is the mat you used for assembly made of? I would like to buy one like yours, can you suggest the model and where to buy it online? thank you so much.
Good to know, I had a L9a-AM4 from a SFFPC build I wanted to use in an AM5 build. I couldn't find my proof of purchase, but the conversion kit was like $8 on Amazon. Much better than $50.
Subscribing you brother.. first time here and I liked your video so much. even though I m not going to build am5 computer right now but the way you explain things (not just talk) is what I really liked. Keep doing it. Thanks 🙏
8 of 9 of my AM4/AM5 are now on Noctua. Whenever an excellent deal came up local I would pick it up. $40 brand new D15’s. $30 U14S. U9S and D9L for $20. I only bought my first one U14S new for $63.75 in 2019. After that I just kept an eye out for them. There are other brands that work but the customer service sending me parts for free and well engineered mounting has sold me. 4x D15 2x U14S U9S D9L Thermalright Silver Soul 110 (D9L)
Hello, Do you think the diameter of the backplate screws is the same as the LGA 2011? Because I have a cooling system that is not compatible, except perhaps with the LGA 2011 socket fixing kit which comes with this same cooling system. THANKS
I have the Noctua NH-D15 Chromax Black. It is good to know that I can use it in the future when I upgrade to AM5. I plan not to switch before Ryzen 8000 though. Maybe its then to weak for the cpu but time will tell.
does an am5 l9 bracket compatible with an am4 motherboard tho? I tried inquiring about the am4 bracket but it seems like it's out of stock now and the only available is am5. They said as long as there is an included backplate on my motherboard it should work fine but now I'm not so sure
I just bought an Id cooler it says it’s am4 and am5 compatible but the back plate don’t fit in the original spot the original back plate fix please any idea 😢
I'm just getting ready to build mine, last part will be in later this week. Do you know offhand if an NZXT Kraken x53 AIO will fit an AM5 socket, I have a Ryzen 5 7600x and the board is an Aorus B650 Elite AX. I keep finding different answers online, some ppl say yes, some say no. Thanks in advance!
I have a 2 year old Scythe FUMA Rev.B SCFM-1100 & everything worked perfectly fine except for the 4 screws that go on to the backplate. They are a little bit too short. Scythe just needs to mail out longer screws.
Thank you for being very explicit about the retainer clips! I was searching all around for info about whether those brackets retainer clips were the same between AM4 and AM5 (needed to replace some I accidentally sold with the old MoBo)! Thanks again! Update: For anyone in my situation, needing to replace the cpu bracket clips above and below the cpu socket. I have an x670e and now can confirm from money wasted, that not all brackets are *not exactly* the same for us. The spacing between the screws on the frame don’t allow for the additional support built into a lot of stock AM4 CPU brackets clips. Not the part on the AIO, the part your AIO attaches to. I accidentally gave mine to a young person learning to build computers who needed spare parts and ordered on made for AM4 and while it fits in one direction, it doesn’t in the other and it’s the wrong way 😢. A lot of AM4 brackets seem to have a little flair of support. The AM5 bracket that came with my MoBo was slimmer and so now I’m trying to see if that kid still has my part because I can’t seem to find any online without it! This also makes me wonder if the two types of clip are actually different heights? Even if by millimeters I wonder if that would screw up your CPU? I’m replacing mine because despite everything else being ok, when I reused my Kraken on the AM5 CPU it died in two weeks. Coincidence?
Dammit! I wish I'd seen this video before I bought my Cooler Master Hyper 212 (ASRock b650m riptide mobo). Should I get a different cooler or do they have adapters?
The Deepcool Assassin III is also compatible with AM5, no special adapters needed. You just flip the four included threaded metal/plastic pieces over, so that the black, plastic part faces the motherboard, and you're good to go.
How come we do not press intel and amd to have the same cooler installation mechanisms so all coolers will always fit on all motherboards and cpu's without adapters?
Good morning. Greetings from the Philippines. I just wonder if DeepCool AK620 WH will be compatible for future AM5 motherboards. If not, I hope their customer service will answer us if the company will provide upgrade kits for AM5.
I was just about to ask about the ak400 lol.... if you go to their website they have instructions on how you can receive the free mounting hardware kit.
I'm looking to update and was wondering if I could keep using my AIO cooler, this was the first result so I definitely got a lot more than a simple yes or no, but it was very interesting lol. Anyway yeah, I can just keep hanging onto this AIO cooler I have right now. I'll probably want to start thinking about replacing it in the not too distant future regardless but it's nice to know that I can put off that extra cost for a while longer :)
FYI* Some waterblocks come with AM4 custom backplates but the backplates themselves use the same height posts and threads, 6-32. E.g., TechN AM4 Block. You can use that block with the stock backplate provided by AM4 motherboards or use their provided “custom” one. The only difference is the custom one is a) machined nicer and b) is a thicker gauge of aluminum. So the claim that EVERY AM4 cooler with custom backplates is incompatible with AM5 is WRONG. It’s case by case… ;)
Well now I'm really confused. I called thermaltake and they said my "Thermaltake CL-W256-PL12SW-B Floe DX RGB 360 TT Premium Edition" AM4 bracket will work on the AM5 motherboard. Can you explain that?
