Here in San Antonio TX we are zone 9. For many years I have grown amaryllis in the garden. No covers during freezing mornings. No damage. Last year we had a full week of below freezing, pretty much 24/7. And it snowed several inches. No covers, except for the snow. No damage. Earlier this month it froze over night, 30 or so degrees. Devastation. And later, several days of overnight freezes. Wiped them all out. All foliage demolished. I do not know whether to leave them in the garden. They will come back. Or, dig them up and pot them.
so did they come back? And when did you plant them in the ground? I bought some a few weeks ago to bloom indoors in a pot for January. When do I put them in the ground here?
Thanks for this video and the explanation. The Amarylis are so beautiful!! Will be trying this in zone 7a in the spring to give it time to prepare for winter! How are they doing this winter ? Can you do an update on these please in the spring ?
Did yours survive and come back? How did you treat it in the winter? I'm also in 7a and have an amaryllis I've had in a pot for 5-6 years but I want to move it outside if I can.
I planted them in my south facing raised garden bed last spring and deadheaded/ snapped off the spent blooms so that more energy is spent into a bigger healthier bulb vs producing seed , let the green leaves turn yellow and died back to the ground. left them in the ground along with my cannas Lilys With mulch the bed already had and put some leaves we raked up on top of them and lots of hope! . And all of them came back!!!! It was such a nice surprise and they are all just flowering this week! I got all 7 of red amaryllis bulbs originally for Christmas in candle wax (that’s how it was sold to me I didn’t know much about them) I peeled the wax off planted them in pots in the winter and then I came across this video and decided to take a chance and put them in the ground late spring . I convinced my mother in law to do the same and hers all came back too but haven’t flowered yet . I’m glad I took the chance 😊
What do you do after the amaryllis finishes its blooms? I'm in California and found them in the garden. Theres a seedpod from the blooms? Not sure exactly what to do. Cut it?
He didn't mention trimming year round amaryllis!! Anyone? I just bought my home and there are potted in huge pots beautiful foliage Any help from anyone who knows I'd love to keep them where they are...
Some say to plant in the ground as you plant in pots, with about a third of the bulb above the soil, and others say to plant in ground covering the bulb completely but not deep. For years I have had mine on the latter fashion, soil to the base of the stems. Many have flowered every year. I cannot say that all have repeatedly flowered, because I have so many. One gardener on YT suggests planting them deep. It works for him. I do not understand any of this. I just know what has worked for me.
I'm in middle Tennessee 6b, close to Cookeville but a little more north. I put some bulbs in the ground that my neighbor gave me probably 12 years ago. I put them in 3 different spots in the same garden. 2 spots have died a few years ago but the 3rd is still blooming every year. I did bury them deep leaving several inches of soil on top. It's been so long I can't remember when I set them out. Sometimes I forget to cover with mulch and I[m surprised they are still living. I want to dig them up but I'm afraid of killing them. When? is the best time to move or divide
