Just like you can’t make an old friend, you can’t paint old furniture and give it the glory it once had, but you did it! It is glorious!!! Thank you so much for sharing your work!!!
it's perfect. i just so happy that you're not one of those " social media influencer" that ruins furnitures by painting it with white. you simply put the life back of this beautiful piece
Argh I hate it when people paint old furniture. I bought an old cabinet a few years ago that someone purposely painted grey with chalk paint just to sell it. (Id have paid her more not to!) It's a beautiful cabinet underneath and exactly what I wanted but I'm still in the process of restoring it. So far the top and original stain is beautiful I can't wait to finish it! So glad that this chalk paint washes off but it takes a lot of elbow grease!
I love this piece! It has so much charm. Love the finish you chose. You say it's not perfect...I think it's perfectly delightful!! What a restoration of a totally unique piece. Great save!
Great job! Never knew about how you're using a sanding brush to remove old varnish. Genius! Makes so much sense because the brush gets into every little surface. To remove old veneer lay a damp rag on the area and run a regular iron over the cloth. The veneer will peel right off. Use this method to get off any or all veneer that's been scraped off. I love the use of wood putty to fill in missing pieces.
A piece of genuine wood furniture wearing its history is invaluable. How anyone can throwaway such an item is beyond me and especially if it is to be replaced by a cheap mass produced lookalike item from the other side of the world.
Looks beautiful! Seeing the inside would've been good cause it was a mess!! I bet it came out really well...wait! I looked at your post again and could see a little bit and it DOES look good! Way to go!
I love gel stain! It has vastly improved everything I’ve used it on. I just do a light sanding, wipe down good and brush or wipe it on. Couple coats of poly and done. ❤
I was really freaking out when you removed the veneer from the sides but it still came out nice. I saw you fixed that one spot of veneer with an old bit. Maybe you should save some veneer bits to use on a future repair.
You did a great job with this piece! I was skeptical of gel stain for a while, but once I figured out how well it works in certain situations, I've used it quite a bit. Way more control, great for blending shades to mimic color variation in wood you're trying to match, and so easy to use!
'It just not perfect, but that's what I love about it'. That is absolutely the best attitude, it's the whole principal of ' Wabsabi', you will go far in life❤
