OMG what a great Tetra! So nice to see a new (to me) fish! Personally, I think they remind me of Rosy Loaches a bit in their movement and mildly in looks (but I'm obviously Rosy centric right now). If I had the space and found them, I would definitely try them too! I always like your species spotlights and when they are on less commonly found fish, particularly. Thanks! (ps if you happen to see this, There is so little info on Rosy Loaches online... here's my update... I wasn't seeing but maybe 3 of them in my tank and thought oh no, I've lost all of them... and then I switched from sinking pellets and instead took my mortar and pestle and crushed up a blend of all the diff fish foods in the house, and they have all come out of the woodwork so to speak and I see all of them all the time! Didn't realize that the heavier pellets just did nothing for them, there was only one gutsy female who would dart out and nibble it. Now this stuff goes everywhere in the high current before it drops and they go nuts for it! And they are spawning like crazy too). Thanks again and good luck with the greenhouse.

Another great vid! Thanks for sharing another species I’ve never heard of. Do you have a nano fish that I could keep in my paludarium with dwarf shrimp (neocardinia)? They’d have at least 2.5gal to swim in, with 5gal water volume total. Ideally, I’d like a nocturnal or slow moving species so they won’t get startled by a dart frog sitting in a shallow region. I know I’m limited by the nano size I’m building a 20gal long paludarium for my dart frogs. They like to chill and poop in their current water bowl, so I figured I’d build them a paludarium w a waterfall. Uneaten fruit flies always end up in their water bowl, so I figured it would be free fish food! The cherry shrimp would help clean up any algae, and the plants would help oxygenate the water and use up the nitrites. The waterfalls can be adjusted to add more or less oxygen/current depending on the species. So far, the only fish I can think of are mollies, some tetra species, corydora species, or 1 betta fish. Appreciate any insight you can provide! Parameters: Size: 2.5-5gal pH slightly acidic to neutral Temp: 68-72F (can get a heater to heat water to 75F) Planted: yes

got issue with Characidium species the whole time since they dont seem to respond well to man made food (heard they would only accept live food, tried frozen brine shrimp with Odontocharacidium cf aphanes and didnt seem to observe any dining action) . had this one (the one in the video are possibly Characidium fasciatum) earlier and tried with tablets and flakes and only had seen them eat and spit it out immediately and eventually they became thinner and thinner and well passed away in the end XS
@protoart4647
@protoart4647 6 лет назад
Finally got these from the store on special order. I think I received two different species! A few of them have a white nose and are clearly the characidium fasciatus. However, three are about 5mm smaller, don't have a white nose and have a lot of gold in them. These last little fish a way more aggressive towards each other! Anyone who got more info to correctly ID them?

@MrCelt81
@MrCelt81 7 лет назад
Totally off subject but I have a couple of questions about hillstream loaches. Can I keep one by it's self? What can I feed them and can I use cO2 with them?
@a.b.8080
@a.b.8080 7 лет назад
I suppose they aren't a schooling fish, so yes. But it's shy, and another 2 will definitely bring it out a lot more. As for CO2, of course. No nonlethal amount of CO2 will displace a significant amount oxygen in the water. Hell, the CO2 is even beneficial for algea you'll need. But these fish need oxygen rich fast flowing water. The temperature (below 24 C or 75 F) and current will have enough surface agitation to provide CO2 in my experience. That, and most plants that survive in the current are pretty hardy plants that grow perfectly without added CO2 in the first place. In the end you'll lose a lot of what you bubble in through the surface anyway. Generally I keep them in a low tech set up with a strong filter and no heater or CO2. Cloud minnows or some danio species combine really well and fill the tank up nicely. Surface dwellers help to get hillstream loaches to get out more too. That's all I can tell you without knowing your tank. I hope any of it has been of use. Have a nice day.
