In my mind, these are WAY more appropriate for the average hobbyist then Dwarf Puffers- and just as cute! Instagram @msjinkzd Website and stocklist: msjinkzd.com/stocklist/ Facebook: facebook.com/msjinkzd/ Buy me a coffee: msjinkzd.com/about_msjinkzd/support-our-site/
Rachel O'leary Great informational video. Ironically, yesterday my daughter went to the library and I had asked her to check out a few fish books for me. One of those books was The 101 Best Freshwater Nano Species. I had no idea this was your book until I started reading it. Cool!
Lots of you are asking how they would do with shrimp. As with any micropredator, they will eat young shrimp. I don't think they would have a chance against adult shrimp, but any baby shrimp would certainly become food.
Also- Must add (and said in the video), This species is OFTEN found in brackish- those fish should be kept in brackish. Mine were collected in Freshwater- so are being kept in freshwater.
I don't know if you noticed, but you may have two different species in there. Look at the fish toward the upper left @2:42, it has the "saddle spot" typical of aggregatus while the majority appear to be doriae.
I am about to put together a brackish tank (I'm partial to my nerites), and I think my journey led me here. I used to live along an estuary, and that environment fascinates me (and I already keep badis badis, so the live food is already a thing, lol). Thank you. Tiny little predators are so adorable.
I’m going to try live food starting today. As I bought the bumblebee gobys yesterday and so far they will eat the bloodworms but nothing else. Hoping to find some at my LFS.
They're SOOO cute! I've wanted these for a while, and am hoping that I can move some into a 10 gallon setup I have eventually. I've never seen them swimming as much as yours--I thought they were completely bottom-dwelling! Anyway, thanks for the spotlight and they look amazing!
I saw these in my local aquarium store they're right next to the Pea puffers and I was like what are these guys and now i have to set up a nother tank to keep them i must have them
Another great Video. I kept these guys years ago and enjoyed them. They are cute with just the right amount of personality to keep things interesting. I think I caught the "nano" bug from you Rachel. :)
Finally you did one on Bumblebee Goby! I have 3 in a 5 gallons tank, all of them females... waiting to get a male when available. I put 2 teaspoon of marine salt in the water and pH set to 7. I had them previously and they don't last too long in pure fresh water. As for feeding, I am feeding them frozen blood worm. The can't be fed with dried food and they don't seems to like brine shrimp very much. I had the mentioned 3for close to months now and they adorable to watch during feeding time! It's kids fighting over candies.
I have two 1 male 1 female in a 10 gallon tank with 2 zebra loch, 1 sword tail, 1 leopard dano, 1 neon tetra and 4 almano shrimp and they have been great, my favorite to watch by far and they make sure they get food for themselves I feed them frozen krill that I smash up into little pieces and they devour it GREAT PETS
Beautiful little fish! I've seen these at my lfs and always been tempted! Have you ever done the whole killifish eggs from eBay project? It's so tempting.
I just picked 3 of these up today. I wish I watched your video sooner, cause then I would have picked up six. Anyways, you’re always my go to person for species spotlights, so thanks again.
Exactly. I grabbed 3 of them today too smh. (Different day of course) but I’m hoping I can actually feed them. Their only eating bloodworms so far. But I will try the frozen daphnia food
This has helped me out a lot. I love bumble bee gobies. Had one for years in a big 30 gallon tank with a big variety of fish and almost never saw it. Was lucky if I spotted it once a month and this lack of sightings grew my fascination anf love for these guys when I was growing up. Just got a couple recently. And put them in a 10 gallon tank with a few pigmy catfish. I'm really excited to have gotten these guys and hope to do a good job caring for them :)
Thank you Rachel. I've decided to have two separate species tank for my cardinal shrimp and bumblebees like I messaged you. I have 30 in a 50cm cube and they are doing great and love their blood worms and brine shrimp. There are so many people out there giving false information about them and looked and you never had a spot light done on them. This has really helped and I just love them so much. They really do have wonderful personalities and I can recommend a species only tank and it looks great with so many in a tank and they do all get a long and I enjoy the squabbles over food. I would love to send you a photo, just don't know how. I will be adding some medium size shells for them too and I keep them in brackish. But I just love them. We are not permitted to have dwarf puffers here in Australia, but these really do fill in the void for me anyways.
Forgot to mention. My bumblebees eat pellets, flakes, freeze dried & frozen food. Sooo easy. I love them. Had 6 pea puffers, down to one. They would only eat snails, not even blood worms. I always worried about them. No worries w the bumblebees.
I have three in a planted 3ft community tank with cardinal tetras, 3spot Gouramis and balloon mollies. I feed mine frozen blood worms or fine sinking pellets. I’m finding it hard to ensure they are feed. I rarely see them they hide amongst rocks and natural caves I made from wood. They are a bit of a where’s Wally of the tank.
I really love mine in my community 20g planted. They def can get out competed but I use a chop stick to bring a worm right to him. Lots of plants and wood for sure and So cool to look at too
thank you for this video. they are too stinking cute. (cue eye twitches and me having to talk myself out of another species lol) I'm a puffer girl and always have been, but I appreciate you showing others something else to look for. I've come across so many who mistakenly underestimate dwarf puffs and their needs/aggression. I always say just bc they're tiny it doesn't take away the inner thug puff 😂 love your species spotlight vids. ty💗
Love these, they are one of my favourites too. I had them in a nano fish 3ft tank about 10yrs ago, I used to use tweezers and offer tubifex or similar to them individually as not alot of food ever made it down to them and i worried theyd start to drop weight, they seemed to be doing rather well until i added a few scarlet badis into the tank and i think where they tend to be more bolshy it must of stressed them out as i lost all my BBG within a month or so after, would love to keep them again though but as you point out its so tricky to no exactly which ones you end up buying. Awesome seeing them in a big group like this though, great fish thanks :)
Rachel O'leary looks good either way! Oh, and thanks for the bumblebee goby spotlight! I have had trouble getting mine to eat in the past but I may try them again at some point.
I found two of these in a local store in a xipho tank..i was so surprise and it was love on first look .i have these two guys in a 30 l tank with a couple of molly, xipho and gupps. I am searching for other couple of these.
From my experience, no matter the size they show their aggression towards anything in their territory. They don't really fight but chase anyone in their way. The more docile gobies stay at the bottom or find a spot to rest. However, if they are somewhere peaceful they will play hide-and-go-seek to anyone similar in size. Like many fish, they nip to show dominance or see if something is edible.
My bumble bee goby was skinny like those on the video, but after some time it got a belly. It is a female, and I think it is eating some of the baby shrimps and some snails in the tank. There is no other explanation how it got fed so much, when I add food in the tank once every 3 days.
in a shared tank what ratio of BBG to DP do you have? what size tank ? ... they are 2of my favourite species but i only have a 15g tank and wondered if i could put 2 of each in with some rasboras as apparently the DPs manage well alongside the ras.
Would a 2.5 gallon be big enough to have so. Obviously maintaining it would be a lot of work, but would it be possible. If so how many would you put in that size tank?
I love the bumblebees but have had little success keeping them. Not sure why, though in my many years in the hobby have learned some species just don't fair well for me. Saw you with the King of DYI and decided to see your channel. Glad I did.
When you say add salt do you mean aquariom salt or ocean salt aquarium products? I used aquarium salt with mine, but I've heard sea salt mix is better because it contasins more various salt these fish need that come from brackish water environment. I had 6 in a well planted and scaped 55G with 6 pea puffers, fresh water flounders from the amazon.
So I absolutely LOVE gobies. And I have about 10 of these in my freshwater 125L tank for almost a year now. And what are your thoughts on adding a different type of Goby, agression wise? (Rhinogobius or the Stiphodon atropurpureus) I'm leaning more towards a no, but then again I LOVE gobies and it'd be awesome.
you should make a small list of fish that could share the tank with each species spotlight. that would give us an idea on what we can put with what. thank you for your videos !!
So they don't need to be kept in a strictly brackish setup? How many per gallon would be a good rule of thumb? I was thinking of setting up a pea puffer 20 gallon but these are just too cool.
My LFS has these! I really debated on getting them for one of my new bigger tanks but the owner said she didn't know if they were from freshwater or brackish. :c
@@RachelOLeary oh no,Rachel I didn’t know. Thank you for responding. Sending you and your family love, hope and healing.❤️❤️ And so much gratitude for your work.
i have two Bumblebee gobies and 22 community fish, Guppies, Tiger barbs, Dalmatian mollies, bala sharks, 1 betta, etc, in a 75 gallon tank.. will this be ok?
The color would be better if they're kept in brackish water, from 1.003 to 1.005. My girls are slightly yellow and the boys are totally yellow to orange. You should try it.
You suggested a species only tank to avoid them being out competed at feeding time? Is that the only reason? I've got a 20 long that is currently only housing a BN pleco and two Bumblebee Catfish (Microglanis iheringi). I wasn't planning on adding more fish, but then you showed me these fish and I may reconsider.
I am getting a 29 gallon on Thursday and will be moving my weird male betta who needs company (the only of my 4 betta I'd say that about!) and his 6 baby panda cories from their 10 gallon. I'd also love to add 10 kuhlis, a minimum of 15 neon green tetras, and a few pink ramshorn. I'm wondering if these little guys are okay with betta, as I've quite fallen for them at our LFS, and have yet to hear of them being housed, together. I was also wondering if I should get several, or just a few. I do know it's important to make sure they get fed, as one of the main problems in community tanks seems to be starvation for these little guys!
I asked the guys at the lfs I go to how to care for them because they have some and one of the guys said that he took some home before and he said they were hard to keep.
Planning a 40 breeder planted tank so I can move my Striped Raphael to it from my way too small 20g high. And I may move my Kuhli Loaches over as well. I WANT these little guys but not sure how bottom dwellers and gobys will mix. Thoughts? Maybe transfer my white clouds and black neons to the 40 as well and make the 20 High a goby tank?
I had no clue there was that many different types I have about 10-15 in my brackish tank with mollies and dragon gobies and they like to nip each other.
Why do Tanks refer to things as a "bunch" all the time? Tip: No one has to worry about slow eaters getting to the food, do as I do, put the cubes of frozen food in a be, run it under a slow running tape then once melted spread the food across the aquarium, the faster eaters can't be everywhere at the same time.
I've been wanting these for like 5 years and I finally learned that I actually can keep them, but do you know if they actually swim, because they're swimming in this video and I thought they would be more laying on the ground? And I want to keep them with my pea puffers and a few other fish, but I mostly overfeed them now, so I'm pretty sure they'll be fine
