Shawn, I think you won the Internet today with that capture of the new fissure. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, albeit tempered by its unfortunate location.

Thank you for all your time taken to share this with us, especially on your anniversary (thank you to your family for sharing you with us today). It was absolutely devastating to see the fissure opened up outside the berm and then again so close to town.

I live on the east coast. Yes, this is from earlier in the day. The lava did in fact encroach on the town where 3 houses caught on fire during Late afternoon EST. The " new" vent is what opened up and its lava crept into Grindavik😢

If this trend of quick and dramatic eruptions in the same fissure system continues, can we say anything (from earthquake data for example) about if the next active fissure will be another kilometre south, or if the magma has least resistance going north of the first vents instead? Also, give your wife a huge hug and a big thank you from me for lending her husband and his expertise to us on that particular day. People who love you for the things you are passionate about are precious.

I watched live yesterday, and I was impressed by how you managed to maintain your sense of wonder at the geologic wonder of the fissures developing, but with a sense of sorrow for the people who were in the firing line. You also did an amazing job of juggling a lot of info, and you kept apologising for not multi-tasking well, but you provided astonishing coverage!!! We really appreciate what you do. Thank you.

Seeing that vent open up in real time made my heart sink. Praying for a short eruption and minimal damage. Watching Puna get annihilated in 2018 was horrible, I pray we don't see a repeat in Grindavik.

Although fairly new to your channel, due to the Iceland eruptions of the past several months, I watch regularly because of your teaching style. Having said that, I know you are a professor first and a RU-vid podcaster second. However, with your time, financial investments, and care and concern you've extended to the Icelandic community (I am not one. I live and reside in the US), I am glad you discovered the second fissure eruption as it occurred. I was watching your livestream and saw when it happened via your drone flight, but this is a good post (just think, you will be in historical literature!). Thanks again for the educational exploration.

It is truly amazing what drones are able to do and the view they are able to give us -- not even helicopters can match this ability at 1000X the cost to operate. That closer fissure has already destroyed at least 3 homes and if the eruption continues for a couple days then the east side of Grindavik is likely to follow suit.

Watching this video is just surreal. I had finished watching a video from Just Icelandic filmed a year ago on how he predicted this area was a possibility for an eruption, and here we are. Thank you for this aerial footage. It certainly gives a different perspective on the volcano's dynamics and exactly where it's moving. It seems Iceland is becoming more visually active each year..

A minute or so before Shawn first notices and points out that vent, you can see a gas plume in the background. It disappears for a while behind the map in the upper right corner, but then reemerges shortly before he points it out. And if you look at that the earlier time about a minute before, there's no sign of lava coming out, it's just a very large gas plume, much larger than when he notices and points it out. So I think that earlier point about a minute before he catches it, is the large gas plume actually cracking and erupting out of the surface, and then just about the time he points it out is when you see the first lava coming out. So yeah, I think they actually captured on video the gas plume that opened that vent up, and the first bits of lava emerging from it, even before he starts pointing it out.
