In this video we add a surfactant to our nickel plating solution to reduce the pitting of the surface finish experienced in our first plating video. The surfactant used is sodium lauryl sulphate, at a rate of 1gram per litre of solution. It works a treat and reduces the size and stickability of the hydrogen bubbles to a degree where they have virtually no effect on the finished plating.This has been a great bonus to my tool restoration process and if you have a tool, piece of machinery or metal item to plate and restore I suggest you give it a try.

We used to use an agitator in our zinc plating tanks to keep fresh solution passing over the surfaces and to disperse bubbles.

Hi Dean, thank you so much for your great comment, I have also started using a magnetic stirrer, as well as the surfactant, the combination of the two really aids the process, I would hope to make an updated video explaining this as well👍😊

@@tomassmith7686 Yes, if you have a magnetic stirrer or something, ,or you can do it manually. As long as the solution is in "motion" I guess.

Kodak Photoflo 200 (or Triton X-100 which is the active component of photoflo) may be a better surfactant than the SDS that you're using. It's non-foaming. If you can't find SDS, a drop of dish soap should work just as well as a surfactant.

Hello from France, It is a bad bad idea to use nickel plating for such parts to be touched. Nickel and ALL salts of nickel are proven to be carcinogenic. Using nickel as surface treatment; it will lead to skin poisoning, itchy, inflammative response due to a powerful allergy. Once someone is sensitized, every part of nickel will gives nasty blisters on skin, itchy and scratchy, swollen members; sometimes with skin fissures/dryness, leading to bleeding. Lots, lots of people are poisoned in Nouvelle-Calédonie, due to the numerous nickel mines over there. The best choice is to use layers of copper, zinc, copper again, zinc onto it. Heating gently in a oven with some nitrogen atmosphere will provide à nice brass surface treatment. Best regards !

Awesome video. I've been extremely curious to the effect of electroplating within an ultrasonic cleaner. They would remove the bubbles extremely quickly, but perhaps would make the plating slower? I am not sure but I'd love to find out.

Thanks for the great video. The surfactant was a great idea to prevent piting. A few questions: (a) what happens if the voltage is increased to 12v (b) As indicated by Dean Waters (thanks to Dean), agitation using a stirrer should also break up the hydrogen bubbles, have you tried it out? (c) Does it have an impact if the anode (Nickel plate) and cathode (copper plates) are closer to each other? Thanks again. 👍

Many thanks for this and your previous video. I'm looking to refurbish a couple of old corroded taps, where the previous plating has been eaten away by little hands leaving soap residue all over them. Just wondering where's the best source (I'm in the UK) to get all the required chemicals (hydrocloric acid and sodium lauryl sulfate) please?

@restoreandmake 3 года назад
Hi Yuki Hiro, thanks for your kind comment, from my research it seems, for the purpose we intend to use the surfactant, you should be able to use sodium laurel ester sulphate, I would certainly use it on a test piece first to make sure. I have also found that using a magnetic stirrer, www.ebay.co.uk/itm/224149190601?hash=item34305537c9:g:pH4AAOSwtrxfhm87 , something like this, helps to agitate the solution as well to prevent the bubbles from sticking👍😊keep up the great work on your channel, the short film about your work is brilliant and I'm sure loads more people would be interested in seeing your great creations👍😊

Hi Urban Cycling Revolution, Sounds like a brilliant idea, I'm going to make a video soon on brush plating with nickel, that would be the best option for you as it's almost the same as painting the nickel on. That way you won't need to calculate the surface area you can keep adding more until your done. I've subbed to your great channel so I can see the results😊👍

I work with nickel plating, let me say that your solution is very dilute in Nickel. The solutions used in the industries are almost black because of the Ni content.

You should probably clarify the acid thing... That's definitely not 50% hydrochloric acid. Concentrated hydrochloric acid is typically 32-38%. It's not possible to maintain concentrations above this due to the high evaporation of HCl.
@sanbe729
@sanbe729 2 года назад
yes it is 50% concentrated HCL and 50% water.
@Knasen3
@Knasen3 2 года назад
@@sanbe729 In other words, the acid solution is likely something like 17% HCl.
@sanbe729
@sanbe729 2 года назад
@@Knasen3 yeah something like that. I think you can push hcl slightly above 40% if you bubble hcl gas into it until saturated but thats no use here haha. Guess with DIY home techniques most people arent chemistry minded, rather following instructions. Which is cool in itself.
