Apologies for being dim, but why did you heat the stems and dip in oil ? Was it some sort of annealing because you heated it before ?

You can save a step and buy Nickel Ammonium Sulfate (same place as you bought the Nickel) and start with plating solution

I keep seeing these DIY chainwhip videos where the drilling of the holes seems way too fast. You want to drill metal slowly so you do not burn out your bit.

I found a Commercial Electroplating chemical company sells a product they call “SURFACE ACTIVATOR” to use same as you are with the HCI & H20 solution. I looked up what the main active chemical in the “Surface Activator” & it’s BATTERY ACID😳. But reading the Amazon reviews/comments they swear by the results???

Just found this video, I didn’t know VONO made vices, or that Duport (Dudley Port founderies) owned them. VONO were famous for making beds! I have learned something today!

Great restoration. Once cleaned of the grime, it enables the plane to better show the history of its use over the years. I look forward to restoring my antique plane to a similar standard. Thank you for sharing your expertise.
