This is a guitar I wish I had, not just because of it’s Kurt’s , but because it is the most unique and most playable guitar ever made.

When I was 15 I saved up after a ton of gigs and went to buy a strat. My dad randomly handed me this Jaguar and I absolutely fell in love with it. I’m 18 now and I’m still playing the hell out it. Didn’t even know it was the Kurt cobain Jaguar until they gave me the case and I saw all the case candy. Never once have I regretted buying it.

Dude that's exactly how I started playing guitar. Nirvanas music was so fun and catchy, and I felt like I could play it. There's a RU-vid video of Nirvana practicing in a basement in 87 , and when I seen that I realized it was okay to suck and I didn't have to be a savant to learn and enjoy playing guitar!
@Aint1S
@Aint1S 2 года назад
You know, a whole lot of the taking heads in *guitar land* on RU-vid would prefer you to not like Kurt Cobain... They claim he wasn't good, it was too simple, it wasn't perfect, and so on. Ironically, that's a sign that you are so good at making music that it's natural and not even little mistakes can make people not like it. They can't cut it... Their frustration is projected onto a guy who wasn't a technical guitarist that sells more music and gear.

Long story short nirvana played a show at my local college, swarthmore college just before they went into the studio to record never mind. They even played early versions of songs on the album. To find out kurt cobain and co played a show less then 500 feet from my front door was a mind blown moment for me. The audio is on RU-vid and it’s crazy

I remember an old guitar world interview with Kurt. He described how the bridge on the Jaguar was a literal nightmare to adjust. On another note, The bass player in my first band had an original 60's Jaguar, identical to Kurt's. It took me all of 2 minutes to break the innards of the tremolo. I was the most hated kid on Long Island after that lol..

@@gabewilliams7462 I remember the interview he was talking about because I happen to own that magazine. He was actually talking about the action on the Mustang bridge, which would apply to the Jag bridge also I suppose. He said "You have to loosen all of the strings, completely remove the bridge from the guitar, and turn these tiny little screws with your fingers, and hope you got it right. Whoever invented that guitar was a dork." Then the interview reminded him that it was Leo Fender. Kurt says, "Great, I guess I'm calling Leo Fender, the dead guy, a dork. Now I'll never get an endorsement." Lol. Little did he know, he wasn't far from being the next dead guy... and he'd get a bunch of signature guitars post-humously. But um, yeah, I kinda have to assume no one ever told Kurt what an allen wrench was, haha.

I love the look of binding on Fender rosewood fretboard. When they released the Eric Johnson model with the bound fretboards, they produced the perfectly spec'd Strat for me: LITERALLY. I have an 08 EJ with maple, that I sold to buy the Rosewood (I bought back the maple one last year, after over a decade I realized it was "The One*). Rosewood 60's neck, but with a 57 contour body; perfect.

I bought mine 3 years ago... My Sweetwater sales guy Kurt was worried I may be out of my genre for the guitar and I assured him I play more than classical. Usually, I play classical styled music which slowly morphs into hammer-ons / pull-offs with some chiming to carry it all; however, that's when stomp the overdrive and distortion with some delay as I begin to play metal. This guitar is a huge help when I'm playing classical with the incredibly short scale and mine has a very Rolling Stones vibe. Each guest has a form of soul and it wants to play what it wants out of it. I love mine! I really like the sound of your rig, just wish I could've picked up the Boogie V head and cab I need; however, it was out of stock at the time.

FYI: There are still a few of Kurt's actual "missing" guitars rumored locally to be somewhere in Thurston county. About 5 years back I think I encountered one but have since lost the trail. The one I saw was a faded red strat. Being friends with some of Kurt's fellow Hoquiam musicians and school mates I've been told there were several in his collection that are just plain unaccounted for by today's archives and historians. It is also rumored that Courtney has placed a price on them (and their possessors) which makes a lot of sense and would confirm their missing state and existence. I would love to see these mystery guitars make an appearance one day. :)

Idk how true this is but Kurt also apparently had two 65 Jag’s according to a guitar tech of his. One of them was the one he played live, and another one that also had Dimarzio’s in it and a bound neck that he changed back to stock single coils. Also if you look at the pictures of the Jag-Stang Polaroid mockup, the Jag in the picture has a right handed tremolo system and is in better shape. Edit: Found the interview, he bought the second Jag in 1992 at Airline Vintage in Dallas for $500. Crazy how he found two of the same guitars, from the same year, with the same mods.

@craigthomson3621
@craigthomson3621 2 года назад
I have also added a coil split switch next to the 3 way toggle switch. It is an easy mod, and fully reversible if you want to restore to original spec. There are already some shrink wrapped taped off 4 conductor wires leading from the pickups that you can lengthen and use (check out the wiring diagram in the service manual on the Fender website). By using some M4 hex nut spacers, you can position the coil split switch to sit low down so that your strumming hand does not hit it while playing. By using the right resistors, and allowing some output to bleed in from the other coil, there is not too great a volume loss when engaging the (partial) coil split on either or both pickup(s).
@philbritton189
@philbritton189 2 года назад
@@craigthomson3621 Yeah it's definitely a mod I'd recommend for anyone, makes me wonder why Kurt or his guitar tech never decided to utilise the space. I know he picked up the guitar second hand, so perhaps it originally did have a switch in that location, that they then removed. I find myself using the coils in the split mode more often than I use the full humbucker. The coil split SuperDistortion has almost a Tele style twang to it, mixed with the short scale length, this guitar becomes great for chicken picking

My thoughts on this Kurt must have really liked this guitar because he beat the hell out of it but it didn't get turned into sawdust unlike many others hahahaha. i had a jagstang for many years but it felt a very unfinished project and at times very disappointing. the jaguar is the best nirvana signature they put out there. it just like fluff says just wants to rip heads off when you want it too and cleans are great too. every overdrive chorus any effect sounds awesome with it. one of my best purchases ever!!

Theres an interview where Kurt is asked about smashing guitars and he mentions this guitar and how it’s his favorite and he’ll never smash it, at least he’s “not ready to yet”

He refused to smash this one out of love, and his customized mustangs out of price..... That's why, 90% of the smashed were strats... They were cheap to replace

Was there some clicking-type noise going on during the clean part? Just curious what that could've been. Guitar sounds great though overall!

I used to own a 1967 Jaguar. Question: What is the extra rotary pot for. My Jag had 2 instead of 3 pots. I am also guessing the slide switch next to the 3-way toggle switch engages a Cap to thin the sound as the original Jag did, but please advise in case my assumption is incorrect. Thanks... I really like Jaguars, and grew up w a jag stang, but eventually “graduated” to jazmaster and strat full scale necks. Short scale feels too small now :(
@drdelewded
@drdelewded 2 года назад
Im the opposite.. I played les pauls for years and jazzmasters always felt too long (Im also 6 foot 1 but Like em lil) So ive had 5-6 jags since I couldnt get used to the jazzmaster... (CIJ, MIM, Squire, 2 X 62 AVRI and a 50th anniversary... so yeah 6)

@@drdelewded It did take a while to get used to full scale. Being 6' 2 w long fingers It was more of a technical decision over preference.

That first jam you could have slid right into ''Call of Ktulu'' with that crunch and it wouldn't have sounded out of place.

Why didn't you explain how the controls work , Does it still have a rhythm circuit ? why does it have 3 tone knobs what are the pick up options ? Kinda missed the mark on that part .

Cool! Actually just watched a vid where they were wondering who owned the guitar before Cobain! They showed a clip of a dude from a church rock band who might possibly have been the previous owner. They couldn’t quite figure out what year it really is-almost like this guitar isnt supposed to even exist! 🤘👽

Those pretty loud high harmonics/resonances in Sound Sample 2 bothered me a lot. They end up being a pain in the ass to mix later on. Have you tried muting the strings below the bridge to check if that's the problem?? Thanks for the review!!
@sammmbear
@sammmbear 2 года назад
it is a pain to mix, and that is the problem. In person its not super noticeable, but when recording it can be an issue. When recording I just put tape above the nut and below the bridge and it solved it but it does take away some of the harmonics overall doing that.

Looks like a very narrow space to strum between the pickup selector toggle and the big volume/tone knobs. I could see inadvertently hitting that pickup selector toggle switch.

That's what adulthood is, buying the coolest crap you wanted/had back in the day. I got depressed looking at eBay prices for some of the old t-shirts I KNOW I had in middle school. $600 for a ratty old shirt?? I just end up buying the bootlegs on Etsy 🤣 To bring it back to guitars, I'm getting a Jag-Stang that I never could back then. 12 year old me would be so proud 🥲
