Join geology professor Shawn Willsey for this Zoom presentation for the Stanley Community Library as he explores the marked contrast in glacial landforms in neighboring mountains, the Sawtooth Range and Lost River Range. Then he explores the effects of the M6.5 earthquake on March 31, 2020 that rattled much of the region.

The thought of sea floor becoming mountains has always amazed me. Earthquakes raise ‘em, glaciers erode ‘em. Great presentation!

I felt that earthquake in Montana and reported it on the USGS site! My friend in Challis said he heard the quakw before he felt it. Great channel, keep it up!

Oh it makes me feel good when I can see before you say… all this knowledge is really sticking in this 66 year old brain thank you Shawn. Amazing and I can see glacial features in our Lake District

That was very interesting. I loved the glacial aspects and then the earthquake part. Excellent photos too they really made it.

32:30 It's gratifying to have known immediately why glaciers predominate in the Sawtooth vs. Lost River Range, and that's only because my _other_ avocation is meteorology. *Rain-shadowing.* Storms in this latitude typically travel from west to east, and orographic lift will squeeze much of the moisture out of the air mass as it rises to ridgeline level, and then heads _down_ the east slopes, compresses and heats up to a higher _potential_ temperature as it descends into the valley, because the air is suddenly MUCH drier than it was before it was all precipitated out on the windward side of the range. This leaves nowhere near as much moisture to accumulate along mountain ranges to the east, as orographic lift starts in the valley with warmer ambient temps than on the windward side of the _western_-most mountain range and therefore must reach higher elevations before what little moisture is left is condensed out of the air mass.

I was awakened early on the morning of 18Mar2020 when a 5.7 earthquake struck Salt Lake City at 7:09AM. I knew what it was but I knew it wasn't likely to cause my apartment to collapse so I just stayed in bed -- I worked the late shift so 7AM is way to early for me to get up. Over the next hour or so I felt numerous aftershocks, a couple fairly strong. When I did get up I discovered one of my Ikea lamps had fallen from a speaker and was broken on the floor. It did a fair amount of damage around the valley and particularly north of Magna. The only other earthquake I remember experiencing was in Santa Cruz California in mid 2002. I had just gotten off work and when I got to the hotel above the beach I went out onto the balcony in my skivvies when a similar sized quake hit. I quickly dressed and when I went to the elevator it was inoperative, of course, so I took the stairs. I don't think I want to experience anything more powerful that those quakes.

It just moved the fault down in Nevada. As sure as rain, there will be more big ones in the future. I was driving in a 7.1 that dropped an overpass and it only felt like some pot holes. The waves were going in my direction.

Great show--I learned a lot. I've knowingly experienced 2 earthquakes--March 18, 2020 in Salt Lake City (several aftershocks also noted) and September 3, 1978 in West Germany when I was in the army.

Come visit Elko, NV and head to the Ruby Mts. Great geology with glaciation, too. Cheers.

It's like a glacier is a latent avalanche moving in very slow motion.

Awesome video and very informative. Love the before and after Finger of Fate pictures and so glad you were not up there when it came down. Such are the risks climbing in earthquake zones.

The leatherman peak formations are really fun to look at right?! Cool man. I perked up when u said seabed & limestone etc .. im from the end moraines of Cincinnati on the geologic 'Cincinnati Arch' . We have coal & trilobites 🤠👍

I never really thought about it before but what we see is the land left after the LAST ice age when actually this land has experienced several ice ages before that! Learned about the most recent Earthquake in Idaho and it's aftermath that was hardly covered in the Midwest news.

Sad that almost all the glaciers in the lower 48 are gone.

A very interesting presentation. An excellent illustration of rain shadow effects. The Sawtooth range has always been my favorite to look at from distances in Idaho. Were the Sawtooths and the Lost River Range glaciated at the same glacial period or in different periods? When was the end of any glaciers in that part of Idaho? I know the basics of glaciers, but I'm not that familiar with the times of glaciation. Of course, here in Washington, there are a few peaks that are still glaciated. This year, I'm looking into plate tectonics, volcanos, and glacial floods. So glaciers fit with 2 of the 3 areas of study.

The 1983 Borah Peak quake nearly knocked my parents house off its foundation. My dad had to shore it all up to keep it from slipping any further. The 2020 quake shook my house pretty good here in Emmett, but it only lasted for a few seconds though.

Do you think the East West orientation of the Uinta range gave it the advantage for glaciation over the other ranges in N. UT? I guess it also has the advantage of the elevation and latitude.

Would LDAR find the fault from the earthquake in 2020?

Seems possible. LIDAR is a great tool for geologists.
