If you are interested in the best vocalist ive ever heard (and that is no small feat ot a title I give lightly) go check out angelina jordanher version of you say just got put up the other day. I've called Adele the voice of the century, so Angelina will just have to take the millennium. Dobe right this child prodigy who isnt a child any more could have a career and music they will still be talking about in a thousand years. Side by side analysis, she covers adele better than Adele sibgs songs that she wrote. She is the most interpretative artist ive ever seen and has been arranging all of her own work since she was in the single digits. Won her nations got talent at 7 years old
Kevin saves his singing for the most important moments. He always hits hard when he does sing. Imagine is another example. Beautiful until the end, then Kevin comes along and steals it.
If you want a video to hit you "in the feels" I think their version of "The Prayer" will do it. The first time I watched it...I cried. It was so good. I don't normally cry like a baby but this one hit me hard. When the sun came out...the tears started pouring. Please react to that one. It should have been their 4th Grammy. Great reaction and explanation 👍. You always do a great job and keep it interesting. Some reactors get boring with all their technical talk. You keep it where everyone can understand what you are talking about. I like that. Thanks again for a great reaction! Sending you love from Texas!!
Pentatonix is what you get when every member of the group is gifted. This started with Avi Kaplan , but Matt Sallee has proven just as talented. Every person knows what they do best, and the group as a whole supports that and brings out the best in each of them. And we get treated to what 5 gifted people sound like in perfect harmony. That high harmony that resonates perfectly to a drop into dead silence at the end of Kirsten's part isn't the first time they've done that. They did it before in "Imagine," with Avi as bass. And Kirsten is the lead in to that high harmony as well, which is how you lead into a high harmony, with a nice high voice. Mitch can do that too, obviously, but Kirsten's high soprano set them up perfectly for it. And their flawless timing on the drop out almost leaves their voices hanging there for a millisecond like a echo into silence. The effect of perfect timing and synchronicity between them cannot be understated, they execute that particular quality better than most. When they do it live, it's one of the most incredible things to hear, the blistering high harmonies - which SOUND like there's 8-10 people, not just 5 - and the drop into dead silence. It raises the hair on your neck when they do it, it's absolutely incredible.
I love PTX so much that they never disappoint, no matter which genre. And I can definitely recommend listening to some of their originals. They developed so much over time. I saw them live for the first time last month, and hearing their voices was breathtaking. Especially Mitch.
I just love how Matt’s smile while singing, perfectly happy to be singing regardless of his part, glad to be part of the group. It always makes me feel his joy.
It’s actually a cover of a Christian singer’s adaptation. The singer is Chris Tomlin. So this is NOT their mashup. It’s Chris Tomlin’s. Give credit where it’s due!
I think this one is a perfect representation of the famous Pentatonix 'wall of sound' - it's so perfect. I always love people's surprise at Kevin's solo bit at the end. He has such a surprisingly beautiful high tenor voice. According to Mitch he can acttually sing higher than him, despite the fact that Mitch is a counter tenor. Please do their version of the Prayer - it's stunning. Also, for the feels their original song Run to me is absolutely gorgeous. PTX are known for their covers and Christmas songs but their originals are incredible and much under-rated.
That part of the song, My Chains Are Gone, that you said was different from the original, was actually written for the movie, Amazing Grace, by Chris Tomlinson. PTX has taken his song and upgraded it to their own!
I find Mitch best one when it comes to annunciating all the letters in the words. In the song “sound of silence”, I listen to Mitch’s solo in the way, he annunciates each of the words - perfection.
It's filmed at The Chapel Of The Wayfarer...designed by Frank Lloyd Wright: A structure made of glass - nestled in a redwood forest. Spectacular!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My second reaction video - nice job! Have to tell you about the LP/Hans Zimmer cover of Lost on You by Scott Hoying and Mario Jose. It is absolutely STUNNING!
His friend/roommate convinced him to upload a video of him playing and beatboxing. When they found out they needed 5 members for the contest/show. Scott saw it thought he was the person they needed. They called him(at (Yale?) premed) asked him if he was interested. All 5 met (3?) Days before the show started.
I remember waiting for this video to drop and listening to it for the first time. Goosebumps and jaw dropping awe. It's my absolute favourite of all Pentatonix renditions, for all the reasons you mention. I'm glad you mentioned their diction... it's something people don't talk about, but you always hear each word when they perform. Perfection.
Check out their arrangement of “Mary Did You Know.” I feel that is the song that best showcases the strengths of each member of the group, and is simply beautiful.
Part of the arrangement I don't hear mentioned much is that each successive verse goes higher. It builds the intensity until Kevin slows it back down at the end.
Great reaction 👏. I love how you picked up on Kirstys part. Most of the reactions I see don't even talk about how she goes higher like 5 times and just nails it. Great job. Please check out more PTX.
Another one that'll kick you in the gut and make you feel all the things, as well as wow you with their wall of sound, is their cover of Imagine!! Each member has a turn singing and it's so beautiful!!
So glad I found your channel and your enjoyment of PTX's talent. Please, please, because you were so touched by this song, listen to their version of The Prayer. I think for me, having been a PTX fan for many many years, it may be my absolute favorite.
I know next to nothing about music and have heard other singers or voice coaches use the lingo to describe what the singers are doing but never understood what they were talking about. You taught me more than I ever thought I would know about the technicalities of singing and music in general. Thank you kind sir for that. P.S. You have wonderful energy and a beautiful smile.
This version of Amazing Grace that adds the "My Chains Are Gone" refrain was originally done by Chris Tomlin for the 2006 film "Amazing Grace" starring Ioan Gruffudd (Reed Richards in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie). Tomlin was hesitant at first to make additions to something so well known, he decided to give it ago after discovering that the song had already had a previous addition, when the last verse was added anonymously in 1790. This version from the movie has become a fan favorite and I've heard it sung in church a few times.
Thank you for a very enlightening reaction. Nick, I absolutely love your reactions and your genuineness in your reactions. This, Hallelujah and The Prayer are definitely in my top 5. Love me some PTX💕
I am so grateful that Pentatonix is getting noticed, they have made my childhood, building up a zone of comfort for me, whenever I needed it. Their soothing voices really cured inner wounds for me😭😭❤️❤️
Not many people notice, but Mitch does have feathers on the back of his jacket! 🙂Great reaction! I enjoy following you on your PTX journey - You are going to LOVE The Prayer - that one is just as amazing and their 'wall of sound' is incredible!!
I’m no vocal coach and really cannot even carry a tune but this is beautiful and sooo emotional! I love the emotion that is portrayed by all of them. Simply amazing! True pentaholic!!
I've heard this performance before but, I've never had the group's techniques explained so concisely and in a way that's easy to grasp before. Thank you! For about the past ten days, I've been working on this song on my soprano saxophone. I need to polish it quite a bit more. I think I will listen to the Pentatonix do it again and see what I can come up with. What I've already go sounds pretty cool because well, the soprano saxophone just sounds cool. There's always room for improvement, though.
One of my favorite videos is their arrangement of Bohemian Rhapsody. They do a lot of playing in the editing, so it’s best heard with headphones. It was such a good version that Brian May tweeted about it. Mitch even does the guitar solos with only his voice, though he has a prop megaphone.
Amazing as always. They blend so well and brings me to tears at times. My favorites are Kevin and Matt. So talented. I love their Christian music, they really get into their sounds. I love The Sound of Silence. First song I heard by them and I became hooked. I could listen to them for hours. They are incredibly talented each in their own way but join them together and you have something that touches your very soul. Amazing Grace and Mary did you Know are the best I've ever heard. They enciate each word so clearly, you can understand every word. Incredible blending of the total group and they all know when to lead and follow. I was a vocal music major, full schoalrship, and they give me chills and pure happiness. You guys are the best. I do have my favs and that would be Kevin and Matt. You guys rock and I never get tired of listening to you. Sometimes when I'm down, I listen to Pentatonix and my day immediately becomes pure joy and satifaction. Thank you for being a shining star with all that you do. You rival anyone out there with your unique spin on songs. Better than the original talent. I love you guys.
Just FYI, this version/arrangement is called "Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone)" was put together by christian artist Chris Tomlin. The only thing he added was the chorus. The original version song was written in 1772 by a former African slave trader turned abolitionist, and had six verses but the last verse we all know wasn't one of them. The verse that starts "When we've been there 10,000 years" was added to the song in the 1852 novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin" from an old African American song. Chris Tomlin took five of the six verses from the original, and the famous last verse, and wrote his own chorus to it. It's such an amazing song, with an incredible back story.
One thing I particularly love in this rendition by them, is the fact that Scott and Mitch doesn’t do their famous runs. Keeping the attention more to the original spirit of the song. And Kirsties vibrato is sublime here as well. ❤️
They’re obviously from another planet. Lol. Always incredible. This one builds and then Kirstie blows the roof off. Love it. New subscriber, btw! 👋 I would LOVE to hear you react and analyze the artist Corvyx soon! He takes my breath away with his arrangements. His aesthetic is kinda eerie and gothic. His vocals are amazing. His head voice, his belts and his range are undeniable. Give it a shot! I recommend his cover of My Heart Will Go On. Quite moving.
Great arrrangement by Pentatonix! I have a "peculiar" relationship with the music, though. Working on musicals and operas, it's not unusual to wind up with a song stuck in your head. The cure I learned is this: You can sing the words of Amazing Grace to the tune of the theme song from Gilligan's Island. Works every time for me.
thanks for this, just watched several of your Pentatonix reactions - appreciate that you give just the right amount of analyzing, not too much tech stuff, but definitely enough to help those of us who are not musically trained, to understand a bit better. Subscribing now, cheers -
I’m not religious either, and I say this on every reaction to this song, sorry for the broken record, lol, but Pentatonix made this/these songs their own. I can’t hear another version of Amazing Grace without comparing it to this arrangement. The absolute joy you can see on Kirstie’s face and hear in her voice as she sings her verse, makes me cry every time. She owns this, it’s hers now. And Mitch was perfect, I love the tone he used here. Scott was perfect in his verse. Matt was perfect at the beginning, so beautiful. And Kevin coming for the surprise win at the end.
This not the original classic version of Amazing Grace…it is a version by Chris Tomlin who added the refrain “My chains are gone; I’ve been set free…” back in 2006.
For the music matching the lyrics and the video - react to "Imagine" if you haven't already. The visuals are so powerful combined with the nostalgia of the song and their "typical" excellent vocal arrangement.
The next few you should react to are The Prayer (hit you in the feels for sure!), Imagine, Bohemian Rhapsody (stunning), Oh Come All Ye Faithful, Havana, Daft Punk (first Grammy).
I'm not a professional singer by any means but you can instantly hear how well they harmonize. Such clear precise lyrics. I'm quite taken with Pentatonix personally ❤
Please, please check out "The Prayer". I am anxious to hear what you have to say about their version. I will warn you, it will hit you in the soul and bring tears to your eyes. And yes I cried the first time I watched it. They are so AMAZING, EPIC, even other-worldly. Thanks for your analysis.
I was a little taken aback the first time I heard Kirstie's solo verse , at how choppy it was. I'm so used to trying to give each phrase flow. (Though she does a good job of ending each two-syllable word group with intention to keep the phrase going.) . As another comment mentioned, this version of "Amazing Grace" was written by Christian musician Chris Tomlin, for the soundtrack of the 2006 film Amazing Grace, about the history of the abolition of slavery in the British Empire. But Tomlin also has a solo version, just him singing and playing piano, and the choppy style for that verse is based on that.
If you like that chord switch up you should definitely check out the ptx version of Mary did you know and the first Noel!! They both showcase Avi Kaplan who is just an absolute legend
These are the best videos on RU-vid! Please do more of these with you doing the separate soprano, alto, tenor, and bass parts, as well as all together as SATB for The Prayer (or any other songs done by Pentatonix), Amazing Grace, How Great Thou Art, Carol of the bells, Be thou, my vision, Now thank we all our God, For the beauty of the Earth, It is well with my soul, Come, thou fount of every Blessing, I heard the bells on Christmas Day and all other Christmas carols and Public Domain songs. Thank you so much for all of your help!
Ohh, would be fun if you reacted to "The Greatest Showman" songs, especially the two greenlight live performances of "This Is Me" and "From Now On". And if you haven't already I absolutely recommend watching Home Free's version of "Ring Of Fire" with Avi.
I'm not very religious, yes obviously I do believe in God and Jesus, just the whole church thing I never really liked, but this song, dang it, I still absolutely adore it. I definitely recommend "Hallelujah" and "Mary Did You Know". Two of my other favorites of theirs. (Oh! I saw you did Hallelujah already.)
Jmo on a very small thing.. as far as their choice of simple, white outfits for this video, it speaks to the purity of God's Amazing Grace & Love, and that our acceptance of Grace completely washes away all trace, or stain, of our sins. The color white perfectly symbolizes our being washed clean. Just my thought.☺️
So funny that you were mentioned that the second verse was different than what would expect from Amazing Grace. Well I hope so since it was a different song entirely titled My Chains Are Gone. This is a mashup by Chris Tomlin. Not original for them, but they sang their own arrangement for it.
