Many years ago the great late Panditji sang concert in Amsterdam, Tropen museum. It was magical, divine, i was spell bound, tears streaming down my cheeks most of the concert, which ended with a Durga bhajan. After, i quickly went back stage wanting to catch a glimpse and thank him, i expected many people but there I was with him alone for a few brief moments that seemed like eternity. looking into my eyes, he seemed transported in to a state of complete abandonment, surrender. He then completely unexpectecly fell into my arms, hugging me tightly, crying, while continuing to chant the mantra of Durga Ma. He had given everything , I will never forget it, the love and gratitude I feld that evening. Such a great blessing had befallen on me.
He, Pandit(title) Bhimsen Joshi, is one of the greatest vocalist ever lived on the earth. He got highest civillian award of India Bharat Ratn.... 😇 It was totally diaphragmatic, because head voice is prohibited in Indian classical music.
@@gururajwankhade6162 Yeah that's true, many Indians confuse with the concept of head voice and falsetto. I did not get this concept from my Guruji but I am into film music and light music as well, so in that way I understood these. It is impossible to sing from the chest after a particular note. The sound automatically comes from the head. The support always comes from the diaphragm though. This is my understanding on the concept.
His house was near mine in Pune Maharashtra. I have been hearing his practice (riyaz) since my birth. It has been a transcending experience to hear that voice during the early morning hours. Mesmerizing. Visited him during his last days. Felt really blessed to be able to just be in his presence. He was a humble human being, and a true artist, to his core. Will never ever forget those moments. 🙏🏻 Thank you for reacting to this. ❤️
You are soooooo lucky..🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 Today is the *FIRST TIME* I've listened to Pt. Bhimsen ji.(yes🙈) I thought Bhimsen was a Raaga or Gharaana or a style name.
Those “aaa aaa “ parts. They are actually perfect pitched vocal notes. Not some random notes. ( for the info of those who are not knowing much of Indian classical ) Takes a lifetime of practice. Not from the diaphragm. It’s from the Soul.
Pandit Bheemsen Joshi was like a an unstoppable force when he used sing. I have spoken to some old people who were fortunate enough to listen him in a live concert, when he was still young. It was as if there was never a need for any kind of mike when he sang. Even if it was installed, it was at quite a distance away from his seated position. When he sang, some times it was like he was literally toying you with emotions and people used to feel as if they were in trance. You can never capture that feeling in the video.
People say that old school Hindustani classical singers could sound exactly the same to the audience with and without a microphone. The sound system was just an ornament for them.
What you are saying is correct I got opportunity to listen to him. He just took us to a travel of the music I must say...Cannot forget that moment. After the ancher told the program is come to an end after that all the audience came out of that trance and clapped...Never got such a experience even after I listen to any of the singers....
Korbin, he's not a legend.. He's a legend of legends. He's The Bhimsen Joshi. He's the God of Indian Classical singing. I am not exaggerating here. You should have closed your eyes while listening to him . You would've felt God - even if you are a nonbeliever.
If he had closed his eyes, he most likely would have felt the sensation of rains sweeping the world outside and a moist breeze touching him ;) That's the real power of raag Miyan Ki Malhar, which probably could be brought out only by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi among the ones who lived in the age of recordings.
This was raaga Miyan Ki malhar a Compostion of Miyan Tansen a legend himself, sung none other than by another legend pt Bhimsenji, indeed this was meant to be epic!
For reference: He is grandfather of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan in terms of Classical Vocal Science. If Rahat scores 99, then he can score 1000. Very very high status!!
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi can totally create a immersive experience of the onset of Mansoon in india complete with thunder and lightning when he sings this Raga Miyan Malhar 🙏
It is not just that he's singing the taans so fast! It is also that not a single note is out of tune AND he arrives at the "Sam" every single time AND that this is imoprovised! No one of the stature of Pandit ji exists in the world of Hindustani classical music. 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
The audience has to stay calm until the artist finishes. Unlike western audiences here in the earlier days it was considered disrespectful to clap or say wow in between the performance. But now its changing.
Whatever he did is indeed diaphragmatic, cutting of breath like that how Rick expected is not at all allowed in Hindustani Classical music. If you go out of breath anyway then you can stop for a few note, (don't even try to sing those particular notes with less breath in distorted way) take full breath then again start singing from the next notes. So all the cycles he did were in a single breath. Also the vibratos he did wouldn't have been this beautiful if had been done with taking breaths in between. ❤️
A Stalwart of Hindustani Classical Music. Pandit Bheemsen Joshi is an institution. Please also react to stalwarts of Carnatic Music like M.S. Subbalakshmi and Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna
U need lungs and vocal chords of a dinosaur or a mammoth to do this kind "chhut taans"(running/runner vibrato) in that kind of a speed !!! Sometimes he is going 16x-24x speeds and doing a 124 matra(beat) taans.....thats y he is legendary singer 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🔥🔥🔥🔥
Many years back, I had the privilege of listening to Panditji in an open-air auditorium in Mumbai. He had become old and had to be carried on stage, but his voice was the same. It was a chilly January evening and the audience was shivering, covering themselves with shawls and pullovers. Then, Panditji started singing. And gradually within a matter of about 10 min, the temperature in the air changed!! It became warm and the audience started taking off their shawls. And the temp remained that way even half hour after his performance! It was incredible! I experienced this live! Pandit Bhimsen Joshi (pronounced Pun-dit Bheemsane Joe-shee) belonged to that category of classical musicians who devoted their lives to the craft, practising nearly 16 hours a day. You can't sing like this without putting in that kind of effort, and of course without the Grace of the Almighty. Those who listen to him experience God. Period. Thank you for your video :)
What a vocalist Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. It is popularly said that to sing classical Hindustani is equivalent to wrestling as it takes alot of strength and stamina. It comes deep from the diaphragm.
No head voice in Indian classical music, Rick... And it's not the cutting of breath. It's singing classical notes in great pace (in vowel sound 'ah' 😊).
Realize that when he does the 'aaaaaa' thing, he always ends it on the first beat of the tabla beat cycle. Each inflection in the 'aaaaa' piece stands for a note. Àaaa-ing it instead of reciting each individual note helps the vocalist speed up the process and unleash vocal pyrotechnics.
You are right, it's diaphragmatic. Also training in both Carnatic and Hindustani instruments essentially teaches you sing with extreme breath control. The music that you perform vocally must have the perfection of an instrument being played. All this while being 100% on key. 😊
The viewers in indian classical or karnatic music understand to respect the artist n do not disturb the artist or make any noises , also it's like staying in the awe instead of jumping n reacting
When he sings, I think gods will stop and listen to the master and pay their respects to him. What a great legend he was and rightfully received India’s highest civilian award.
Pundit (Pt.) Bhim-sen Joshi is a huge huge legend! It's wonderful to see you guys appreciate some odd the pinnacles of fine music! Not many in our country appreciate these jewels! Your evolution to begin a full Indian is very near complete, guys! ❤️❤️
Rick, you got it... It is diaphragm which produces the sound. Hindustani classic uses a lot of diaphragm singing. Pt. is short for Pandit. Pandit is a title used for Hindu Maestros much like Ustad is used for Muslim Maestros. Pandit and Ustad means expert, basically.
Disagree. Diaphragm singing won’t you last long in a classical singing scene. It is mostly about chest and naval singing but yes, diaphragm control is critical
Pandit(Pt.) means Scholar!!! He is a legend and I don't have any words to describe him. He is almost equivalent to 'Tansen', the Hindustani Classical King of the world(during Emperor Akbar).
People are not very reactive because in those days people were very used to classical music and used to listen to a lot of it. Also, this seems to be a house baithak. Which means some patron invited pandit ji to perform in his house. Which means only seasoned listeners were lucky to listen to this live. :)
Pt. is short for Pandit, which is a title equivalent to Ustaad, but in Hindu tradition. Ustaad is mainly in Islamic tradition. Although they are used interchangeably irrespective of the artists religion. His name is "Bhimsen Joshi", one of the greatest hindustani classical singers. "Miya ki Malhar" is the raag he is performing.
It is diaphragmatic, with a perfect appogio, but not a cutting of the breath. With the right appogio, you have to modulate your pharyngeal space so as to adjust the air flow, to bring that taan. The airflow as in, the Crescendo and decrescendo done at such an insane speed is what gives that taan. You have seen Kowshiki Ji's practice videos, so the same and similar stuff when done in 5 vowels is what helps us achieve that. 5 vowels and 6 speeds to be precise about our practice. Do give it a try if you want to, maybe you too can achieve it with years of practice.
This his how melody dances on one's vocal chords, a very very few can achieve that. The only spiritual connection there is in the world. Pure art and planned eccentricity. Well he is the best, for more check amir khan the classical singer (not the actor)
It's not show off. Even after reacting to multiple Indian Classical musicians this is your take on it ? This levele of expertise takes decades to master and right from early age. He was one the best.
What he is singing is called Miya Ki Malhar. Malhar is associated with torrential rains. There are various varieties of Malhar. Miya Ki Malhar is one of them. According to legend, Malhar is so powerful that when sung, it can induce rainfall.. The complexity of those Taans & sticking to the Malhar Rag framework & Tempo of Tabla comes with years of Riyaz. (Practice). If you listen carefully you will get the feeling of torrential Rain while listening. The people were listening to him calmly because they were in trance with his singing. If you really understand Raag Music well, you will be calm & concentrating towards listening. Nothing else. That's why you will find people without any reaction. Occasionally when the singer lands perfectly at correct tempo after taking various complex Tan combinations within Raag Framework, they will just nod at the moment. That's it. Listening & appreciating Indian Music also requires some understanding (training) in Raag.
All the classical singers both Hindustani and Carnatic whom u know including musicians like Kaushiki and Zakir Hussain .... They all Revere and regard him as GOD of classical music
Pt is short form of Pandit which means a learned man. His name is Bhimsen Joshi and is fondly called Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. He is a Legend of Indian music. You also need to react to another legend Ustaad Bismillah Khan.
"Mian ki Malhar " Is the name of the Raag he presented. , it's means " The Malhar of Mian Taansen" . Malhar is category of Ragas, particularly for rainy season, the monsoonal Raga. This Raga depicts the Rainy season and it's greatness.
He has set a benchmark and no one till date has achieved such level of mastery. It is because of Pt ji aspirants of hindustani music get the motivation to do riyaz 🙏
Absolutely phenomenal! A master of his craft. Supreme control. I was sobbing by the time I finished watching this performance. I don't understand this music, but it was sublime. It touched my SOUL !
I will sum it up as follows. In Pune where he stayed, in those golden days in 80/90 's open road concert is the norm. I was studying then in one of Engg colleges in Pune. We use to attend lot of concerts that time. In them I attended one by Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. It started around 10:30 / 11 PM and he is singing till 4:30/5 AM in the morning non stop. I am in heaven for those 5/6 hours. I still get goose bumps when I just remember it.
When u start listening this. U would be addicted to this. Legendry vocalist. This is the highest possible level of singing. He was a true master. U can feel god's presence around you when u listen to this with closed eyes and thats awesome feeling.
Pandit ji has received India’s highest civilian honour “Bharat Ratna” for his contribution to Indian classical music,Decades of dedication, passion, love and practise is required
Pt. Stands for Pandit. And nobody is speaking about what is Mia ki Malhar? I'm a layman, but I think the term has derived from the composition by Mia Tansen. Is it? Is it that surrealist raaga megha malhar by Tansen, by which he could cause it rain? Please excuse my ignorance and enlighten me if anyone can.
He is the greatest of all Hindustani Classical musicians and rewarded the Highest Civilian award in India "Bharat Ratna" meaning " the jewel of India". No one can sing like him.
The way he was singing it was "Taan" in hindustani classical music which they form with several note in accending and decending Order to remain in raga or mode in western music fast eg. More than 180 bpm. not the vibrato. It takes life to master of it. And the way he sang will take 3 life cycles of practice
He was probably the greatest Hindustani singer since Tansen (who was in 16th century). His anthology is published and available, having all Hindustani Raagas of any significance recorded in his voice. That anthology sort of sets the standard for the best exposition of any Raaga.
Pandit Bhimsen Joshi ji, he sung Miyan Ka Malhar one of the toughest Raga in Hindustani classical music. There are 64 Ragas in Hindustani Classical Music.
Thankyou for reacting to this video guyzz🙌Panditji🙏🙏❤.....The lady sitting behind Panditji playing tanpura is his wife Vatsala Joshi also a great singer. I will suggest u to read more about Raag Miyan ki Malhar....its significance.
he's Pt(Pandit=maestro) Bhimsen Joshi, one of his kind in the field of Hindustani classical music. He's the recipient of Indian's Highest Civilian honour "Bharat Ratna" or Jewel of India
Pt is for pandit , pandit is again like ustad , while ustad is an urdu word and pandit is Hindi word .... It's like best of the best int their work ...
This is a 'baithak'. A private setting, with very few ppl, in which a Hindustani classical recital is performed. Unfortunately, the audio quality doesn't do justice. I can only imagine how surreal it must have been for those who were present. There was no sound system to record, only the camera with a primitive sound recording system. He is just out of this world. Similarly, Prabha Atre, Kishori Amonkar, Jitendra Abhishekhi, Vasantrao Deshpande - all stalwarts!
awestruck !!!???!!! hahaha,,,,,,oh yes that is Indian classical music in its basic form,,,,,,,,,,,,nice to see u guys taking this treat wholeheartedly !!
*****Attention Rick & Korbin**** His name is Pt. Bhimsen Joshi Song is Miyan ki malhar! He was Indeed a legend! Like all other legends that you have encountered in their respective fields. All Hindu (mainly brahmins) Masters are given the title of Pt. (Pandit which actually means a “Priest”) but in case of musical legends, It means Maestro!! And all Muslim masters are given the title “Ustad” which means the same. So, likewise Pt. Ravi Shankar(he is a hindu brahmin maestro) & Ustad Zakir Hussain(He is a muslim maestro).
pandit has nothing to do with religion, its simply means a scholar or master of arts, since brahmin were considered scholars they were referred as pandit, Ustad is simply a synonym in another language, they have nothing to do with religion
Pandit ji is God for all us !! Those who can understand Hindustani Classical music are gifted and those who can sing are lucky ,talented and gifted people...! Pandit ji is the celestial being who took incarnation as human on earth !! We mortals can only bow and feel his divine powers !!
You love classical music so much, you NEED TO WATCH the Amazon series Bandish Bandits. Don't go by the trailer, it's a brilliant and beloved show perfectly taking you through the process of classical music. It has Naseeruddin Shah in it too. That should be your next watch. You've only scene crime thrillers/ dramas till now.
The taans come from the throat. Your Vocal chords need to be that developed and that happens with only one thing. Practice. Endless and thousands of hours of practice.
Not exactly vocal chords, because singing all of it using only vocal chord muscles would create an immense pressure on the voice and the taan would sound very forced and unpleasant too in that way. Mostly breath modulations along with a little manipulation of vocal chords make these taans sound right.
