In this video I'm pushing the DJI Osmo Action 4 to it's low light limits and I explain what the EIS is and what it does and why it's not the best setting for low light video recording.

I wish these cams had a wider or even adjustable aperture. That's probably the main reason our phones are so much better in low light.

Hello. True but phone use computational photography to create an HDR image. It's a different way of capturing data. The Insta 360 Ace Pro does this as well but it needs a separate processor to do that. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

Another very nice video. Since I bought dji action 4, little disappointed when comparing to Insta one RS 4K a don't see huge difference, I discovered DJI lut applies quite well to Insta 4K flat (8 bit vs 10 bit). For me the major issue with DJI Action 4 (No remote wakeup via bluetooth like insta or GoPro and forced shutdown after 30 mins unbelievable) with my other cameras I use those functionalities to film birds or nature. If you want to push limits even further - you could remove the lens cap with glass and put another one, without glass. You could save about one stop in that setup. I film a lot with underwater housing so instead of having 2 glass barriers I have only one and let more light touch the sensor :)

The users of Ace Pro will not cry as they do not even have to go through all these troubles to get the same quality 😆 Which suggest why DJI has to offer such a huge discount recently 😛

@@BIGBENPRODUCTION Don't think manual control is considered a "trouble". I do think that the total lack of any manual control, ai warp and slightly better low light performance don't warrant the 150€ price difference. I also wish you could plug a USB-C mic into the Ace Pro but you need an adapter. I do like the Insta mobile app I'll give you that. And I like the flip up screen too (even tho I can't see it if I wear polarised sunglasses)

Hi M1R0, thanks for the great guide!! Just bought Action 4 and hoping to use it for snorkeling soon and then Northern Lights in Norway during winter. Do you mind sharing some advice on how to manage the manual settings? From what I've seen, i need to set fixed white balance while snorkeling to avoid color shifts. Would 5600K be a good starting point and then adjust from there? Any guidance for adjusting it? Especially underwater? Is there any other setting that would be good to change? For Northern Lights, kinda worried as it will be dark the whole time. I'm thinking to set one custom for low light and moving and one custom for low light and static. For the low light and moving, I am thinking something like fixed shutter speed 1\100 with ISO 100 - 1600/3200 and RS on. With static, thinking of 1\50 with ISO 100 - 1600 and RS on. Are these any good? Are there any other settings to consider? For all these. I'm planning to use 4K/4:3 to maximise the image and 25fps. I was thinking to also try some time lapse shots. What settings would you recommend for using it to take Northern Lights? Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello. Thanks for the comment. As I know the OA4 has a dedicated colour sensor in the front (hidden in one of the "o"s) and this is to avoid any white balance issuse underwater. Maybe try the auto first otherwise 5600 should be a good start. The setting for northen lights should be OK. For the timelapses: I can't really say because I've never seen them in real life ;). I actualy don't know how fast they move accross the sky, I've always seen just timlapses. Hope this helps just a little bit. Cheers!

Yeah the reason I thought to put the fixed value is that I saw some people complaining that when they swim the whole color just shifts a few times because the scenery changed regularly while they snorkeled and the feedback was to fix the value. Thanks as well for the northern lights feedback. Appreciate it. Will keep digging around online. Hope to practice using it before the trip.

What settings do you recommend for recording in a gymnasium? I am trying to record basketball games. The lighting isn't great and my first attempt wasn't great. Can you help?

Hello. try setting the minimum shutter speed to 1/100s or faster. ISO should also not go higher then 3200. Action cameras are small sensor cameras which means that they don't perform well in low light. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

I looked at another review, Insta360 Ace Pro is killing it in low light but offers only 8 bits instead 10 bits of Action 4 and more lens distortion in wide lens compared to Aviotn Pro.

This is fantastic and exactly what I was thinking. Every single review I've seen says the Insta360 Ace Pro has better stabilisation because the Action 4 has the motion blur when walking, not understanding you can completely remove it by cranking up the shutter. Sure it's nice Ace Pro has better denoising built in (at the expense of detail), but I do wonder how that compares to correctly recording and post processing Action 4 footage like you have done. In theory, because Action 4 has less/larger pixels, it may outperform the Ace Pro if you're willing to do manual + post processing.

Hello. That's exactly right. The video performance is better on the OA4 because of the pixel binning done on the sensor. The Ace pro needs an extra processor to do the "magic" and that's why its more expensive. 10bit D-Log is just the right way to go if you want to have any flexibility in post, but not all people use these cameras this way. For the most part people just want to press record and be done with it. Thanks for the comment. Cheers!

@M1R0_Life_through_a_lens You have it backwards. The Ace Pro does pixel binning with its quad bayer sensor. It combines 4 pixels together to make one big pixel. The Action 4 has less pixels, which are bigger and cannot do pixel binning. The end result for both cameras in 4K isxsimilar, but the Ace Pro has enough pixels so that without binning it can shoot 8K or zoom in 4K without loss of resolution.

Just to clear it. Both cameras have exactly the same sensor. The difference is how they pixel bin. The OA4 does it on the sensor so it's locked to 12MP and the Insta does it with signal processing. This is why 4k on OA4 looks sharp and 4k on Insta looks digital. 8K however look amazing on Insta. I think the Ace Pro is a bit too expensive for what it offers but anyway you get a good camera either way. Cheers!

That's a great video but I think you're doing one big mistake in your Davinci processing pipeline, i.e. to place the DJI lut step somewhere in between instead of being the very first step. As it converts a logarithmic scale back to a linear one, your shouldn't do color/brightness/gamma adjustments or anything else before. Of course it still does some kind of conversation, but not the one intended by DJI anymore.

Hello. The idea is to have more information to work with before the conversion. I'm not sure how wide the colour space of D-log M is but it should be more then rec.709. Typically you adjust the the luma and croma before the conversion when working with log because of that extra info. Anyway thanks for the comment. I really appreciate it. Cheers!

Very informative video as always, Miro ! I am on the fence of buying an A4. Have the A3 and a bit disappointed of the low rez type of image with lots of fake sharpening on top of it and all that ghosting with its quick stabe degradation. (A2 is the same) Gopro 10/11/12 in flat and then graded is much clearer and more detailed. I do short property videos (lots of indoor light, which is not great) with the gp 11 and then stabilise in post with their paid gopro player/stabilizer and its absolutely insane. You can do horizon lock and the image goes to a 13-14mm full frame field of view. The big question is - can gyroflow stabilise well horizontally the A4 in post and to give you that rocksteady type of field of view of about 14-15mm ? (The horizon balanced crops in too much and its too tight of a frame) I tried with my A2 which also has gyro data but by far gyroflow can't stabilise the horizon well like the gopro and its software. Hopefully they've fixed the issue with A4 as that camera will produce better image with its bigger sensor. Best !

Hey! Thanks. The OA4 works very well with Gyroflow. It's better that Rocksteady and you can get a wider field of view. I'm not sure what the equivalent focal length is but it is wider. Cheers!

@@M1R0_Life_through_a_lens isn't rocksteady a terminology for EIS. All action cameras have only eis. Switching off eis means switching off stabilisation which means turning off rocksteady. Am I missing something.

The "EIS Priority" I'm refering in the video is for setting the auto exposure in a way that the camera doesn't slow down the shutter speed too much because it effects the Rocksteady very much. In other words the camera will prioritize Electronic Image Stabilisation AKA Rocksteady over the image exposure making things darker in dark places.
