I asked a great guitar playing friend of mine if he could give me lessons. Said I wanted to learn how to play like Mark Knopfler. He laughed and said, “so do the rest of us guitar players”.
I played for years before I realized that to be half as good as the guys I wanted to play like I was going to have to do nothing but study music and play guitar. My only consolation is that Mark is one of the few who plays with fingers the way I do. I'm only 70. I'll keep learning. ;)
Hard to believe this man has been putting out a QUALITY sound for over 40 years & STILL is an impeccable artist! Some older players lose their edge; NOT this dude!!
I had never seen Knopfler live before, until 2019 at Wolf Trap, Va. Fortuitously, my friend had front row seats. Best show I've ever seen in my life. Kept hearing these amazing guitar licks, and I'd look around the stage at all the guitarists to see who was playing them, and it was always Mark Knopfler! I never knew. Definitely one of the best guitarists alive today. If you asked me if I wanted to see Paul McCartney and Ringo playing a reunion gig or Knopfler with his current band, I'd have to pick Knopfler. That's how good he is.
Listen to mark and the band every day best song is one song at a time thank god for you tube watch a German band called dire strats once upon a time in the west magical 🙏🙏🙏
Me too. When I was a kid my dad and I use to drive around and he would just crank Brothers in Arms. Some of my favorite memories. I would ask him to turn it down and he would tell me no and laugh. I, of course, carry on the family tradition.
Mark's music is unique and his notes formations and the way they sound are even more unique. He has added another dimension to the way a guitar can possibly sing or cry.
Who underates him ? The fact that forty years after the first DS album came out that he still plays to full houses suggests he is not underrated. But I do think he is beginning to lose his original touch.
My god, the best version of one of the oldest, and coolest songs by this musical genius! EVERYONE, from the intro, to the chillest bass and drum groove, to the flute and horn leads, and to of course the impeccably brilliant guitar/vocal work by Mr (why hasn't he been knighted yet?) SIR MARK KNOPFLER! Had to watch this three times straight! (397 dislikes? Now that's just insulting!)
It's a little sad that just because Mark's such an amazing lead guitarist & and a story teller of a songwriter second to none, that most of us fail to really fully appreciate his fabulously unique vocals !
Oh, I've always loved Mark's vocals as well. Do they have a ton of range? Perhaps not, but they're the ideal understated, narrator-style accompaniment to his music. To me he almost sounds like the Geordie rock version of a Morgan Freeman narration track... very steady, reassuring, deeply personal. Mark is a true artist and I believe he's well aware of his (few) limitations. He crafts his songs such that they suit his voice perfectly, IMO. Anyway, hope your Sunday suits you perfectly!
Mr.knopfler Since i am been in the army NVA east germany 1978 Follow u in my mind 44 years Wish u and all your relatives the best Jörg reinicke Potsdam germany
I’m 72 years old. There are 3 masters of the guitar that have been with me for the majority of those years, two living and one sadly passed last January. Mark Knophler, Steve Morse and Jeff Beck…each with a creative genius that is indescribable. Mark’s songwriting and musicianship is out of this world.
I was on the Cologne concert in 2019 and heard this song live. So surprised I almost cried tears of joy that it was on the setlist. The original song was played on the Schecter Strat, just love how much fatter & better it sounds on the Les Paul.
Mark wrote the songs that the strings wanted to play and every ear wanted to hear. Every tune had the world saying "how did the world exist this long without this song being written before?" Just a tune you never get tired of. Back in the late 70s I remember a lot of fans and DJs saying that they didn't put much into this second album, it was nothing like the first, et cetera, but this song alone meant you just had to buy the album.
Glenn Worf is an all-star. Honestly the whole band is sensational, masters of their crafts. Richard Bennett holds is own beside Mark but Mark's got that mojo and is a literary genius.
hard to believe it was over forty years ago that I first heard this man sing and play Sultans of Swing. Just a fourteen year old inner city kid who, at the time, was in love with Elton John. I have all of Mark's work. I am very loyal to the greats...., and MK is absolutely one of the greats.
Imagine some kid/young adult seeing Knopfler for the first time.. They'd be like who's this old timer? Only to find out that the old timer is a guitar god!
I saw Dire Straits in Glasgow on the 'Every Street' tour, early 1990's, and saw Mark on this tour last year in Newcastle, UK. MK was back then, and still remains THE Master of the Universe!!!!!
My all time favorite singer and songwriter, I have had the privilege of meeting Mark on his tours in India!!!! An extremely down to earth person. There are are many things money can't buy and one of them is meeting Mark in person
Quel musicien!
Heya, Mark and all, I'm watching this video during the Corona Virus quarantine, have 54 years under my belt, and ya'll make make me feel like a teenager again, thank you so so much!
Long Live Mark and Band ☝️👍 War bei Dire Straits ' 89 in Köln. KL: Klasse Leistung 😊
My generation is a lucky one; no war, job, health and lots more. And as "cérise sur le gâteau" , meanwhile more than 40 years of a beautiful musical work. Thank you Sir
@@stevenholton438 definitely! This hotel bar, is full a-people. The piano man is really layin it downn Even the old bartender is high as a steeple, So tell me why should I wear that frown. That's lyric writing to its finest right there. Throw in the blues narrative and guitar to it and you have a masterpiece. 💙
OMG...I was just watching Him play Telegraph Rd and it reminded me of Once Upon a Time in the West... And this popped up... Can my phone read my mind now? Who cares...shut up and listen! Eric Underwood class of 81 Downey High School California 🙏❤️💪🇺🇲
Każdy podkreśla znakomitości Konopflera jako gitarzysty. I słusznie. Absolutny geniusz muzyczny. Dziękuję Marek.
Still the KING. Getting her done. What an AMAZING soul. I consider it a blessing to be on this planet at the Same time this soul chose to come and amaze us with his ability to create such phenomenal music with the Guitar.. what an amazing history he has also that steered him along this path. He once said when he looked at one of his guitars in the store front window, that he felt he wasn't worthy enough to play such a beautiful instrument. You talk about being humbled.
There are other great guitarists around like Peter Frampton, Larry Coryell. Don’t name somebody the best, it is always depending on your own taste and choice.
@@stsstz2586 that's all they did, though - state who they thought was the best. I don't know why you're being a weirdo about someone expressing their opinion, and trying to shit it down. Odd behaviour.
Hard to believe but in 1979 when "Dire Straights" was a top hit we lucked into seeing Dire Straights at the UC Davis Coffee House (we were freshman, what a way to start college), seating less than 400 people. I was over the top! One of my forever favorite bands (and Mark Knopfler one of my forever favorite players). Wowie.
1994. I bought the Communique album. On a cassette. It was the missing link, between first album and Making movies. The opening guitar of Once... was so cool.
Mark Knopfler can find the timeless instrumentality of a song to lure the ancestors' memories of the glories of sound amid a tortuous life...the beauty of a song to ease the mind into a hinterland of genetic memory and the realities of the moment. Knopfler can untangle the neurons so that a state of harmony allows you the FEEL again and THINK of the essence of this world we have made while corrupting the gift our God presented us. A profound writer with a God given talent and mastery of the guitar with generations of performances as proof.
This is one of the most effortlessly gorgeous, understated passages of music I've heard. Especially the first solo - just staggering. Who else can play like this? Well, no one - MK is unique. But you could try listening to one of his mates who also does something special but different: listen right the way through and don't be tempted to put the volume up - it's best listened to intimate-style (they both are tbh - which tells us something!). ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XdCGdL3R0n0.html
