The only HR ever hit over the left-field roof at Ebbets Field in Brooklyn was hit by Joe Adcock of Milwaukee. I may be dating myself, but I was there that day.
Should've just titled it Bonds, Fielder, Thome and Dunn bombs. Nice homers none the less but gotta have McGwire, Canseco and Strawberry homers if they are bombs those guys hit some monster shots
Those shots Fielder hit were epic. Only 4 men ever hit a ball over the left field roof, at Tiger Stadium. Harmon Killebrew did it first, in 1962. Frank Howard did it, in 1968. Fielder did it twice and Mark McGwire did it. Of those 5 HR, only Howard hit it high enough to clear the roof (all the others bouncing off of it). That is a titanic shot!!! And Fielder was the only player to hit one out of Milwaukee County Stadium. EVER! Agreed, that the players you mention hit some blasts of major proportion. But, please don't slight Cecil, Dunn and Thome. They were as strong as could be. Those HR Bonds hit, in SF, were nothing. Never would have gone over the RF roof of Tiger Stadium. Lots of guys hit HR, in the water, in SF.
+Mike Williams 1920 was the first year of the "new baseball". 575 feet is an awesome drive anyway. No way anyone would ever have hit a 575 foot dead baseball shot.
Was hoping to see some Frank Howard homers on here. I know he went completely out of the stadium in Dodger stadium, over the left field roof in Tiger Stadium, and, completely out of Yankee Stadium. I saw him hit a 420' line drive homer to dead center field in Arlington in 1972, that never got more than 20' high. It had already landed before he was even close to getting to first base. He has at least one documented (not guessed) 560' shot. Oh yeah, no steroids, either. This guy was a beast 1958-1973.
Stargell cleared the RF roof at Dodger stadium twice. He hit one high into the upper deck at old Olympic stadium in Montreal too. I believe those we're all 500+ feet.
Some of those shots out of AT&T are questionable. Just 309 down the right field line and 365 to on right with no bleachers, just a wall and there's the street and river. That park was built for these things to happen.
Nice video. I have no problem with the music or the steroid guys in the video. If you are going to show a compilation of blasts that cleared the stadium, it's impossible not to show steroid guys. Well done, I was entertained.
WonderDrugEchinacea Yes, I agree as well...dump the music...I just like listening to the reaction of the announcers, but you can hardly hear them because of the overlying music! Also, I was hoping there was footage of Greg "The Bull" Luzinski & Ron Kittle back in the early 80's when they hit a few out of old Commisky Park for the White Sox.
Other soundtracks considered but ultimately rejected for this vid: Calliope music, "Kiss Kiss Kiss" by Yoko Ono, and a test of the Emergency Broadcast System played on endless loop.
Jim Thome was one of the most underrated sluggers ever!!! Brian Giles was 2!! I'm from Pittsburgh so obviously baseball not been too kind, but I remember when we got Brian Giles for a couple seasons and it was nice to see a slugger again considering our last one before that was Steroid Bonds!! Before the steroids!
No mention of Tigers Norm Cash who hit the ball over the right field roof at Tiger Stadium four(4) times, and I got to see one of them in person. Plus, Harmon Killebrew hit one over the left field roof once and I believe Dave Kingman did also, and maybe Frank Howard.
....or "The Toy Cannon" Jimmy Wynn's legendary blast out of old Crosley field in Cincinnati that landed on the freeway and hit the cars! Plus, Don Mattingly hitting the facade in right field, ala Mickey Mantle, in "old" Yankee Stadium (sounds weird to say now.) My favorite Big Fly's are always Cecil Feilder's on-or-over the roofers in Detroit...or,of course, Reggie Jackson's mammoth shot that hit the tranformer in right (just 3 feet) from going out in Detroit in the 1971 All-Star Game....they're all great, can't have em' all...
Too bad there's no video of the one Stargell hit over the right field pavilion at Dodger Stadium. Only player ever to do it. Also, it would be awesome if there was video of the four players who have hit home runs into the center field bleachers at the Polo Grounds (Luke Easter, Joe Adcock, Hank Aaron, and surprisingly, Lou Brock).
Somebody please explain to me why ANY of Barry Bonds homeruns are in this video. The Pac Bell/AT&T Park was built to give left handed hitters, especially Bonds an advantage. Only 309 down the right field line and 365 to right field. Easy for even a medicore hitter to hit them totally out to right in San Francisco. Why not put Gorman Thomas hitting one out of County Stadium, or Greg Luzinski or Ron Kittle hitting the ball over the left field roof in Old Comiskey Park? What Bonds did is not impressive in the least.
Dave Kingman wasn't a great player, but he certainly hit some memorable home-runs. He had some good years with the Cubs though, his best years probably.
Kirk Gibson was notorious for hitting home runs over the right field roof at Tiger Stadium, as was Cecil Fielder. Don't know if anybody's done it at Comerica.
jbsmg its true im a Cardinals fan. We have forgiven Mark. So you can get over Barry. Hell I'm all for Pete Rose ban to be lifted. I promise you I can find someone on your team who has used steroids
Garrett Jones river shot was amazing to see on ROOTSports, I wish I was there though when it happened. A lot of amazing moon shots outta there especially Barry Bonds homeruns. I'm guessing when Willie Stargel hit the homerun out of Dodger Stadium was before TV. That should be on there,
what? first off, everyone back in the late 90's and early 2000's was using steroids, bonds was also competing against a whole league using steroids (about 70%). it's not like Bond's was the only one. Bonds was already a great player, steroids just made him incredible. Plus it's not like ATT park is a hitter's ballpark. It is about 330 to right and 420 to right center. On top of that, the air is really thick making it harder for the ball to travel. And what do u mean no crowd?
Bonds is a joke...........let's see...........roided up, wears a piece of armor on his right arm AND stand over the plate. Gibson, Drysdale, Jenkins, etc. would have put not 1, but 2 in his right ear.
at the olympic stadium, Willie Stargell hit a 534 feet home run and in the section he hit it, there is a red seat in the middle of the yellow ones to show where the ball lands!
I really don't like guys who think they are big time editors and feel the need to edit in some crap music. You want to make music video, please do, at least I will know not to waste my time. Thumbs down.
great video! I was at the game when thome hit it out of the jake in Cleveland! I remember asking my friend " did that land on the road?" that was a bomb!!!!!! thanks this was great!!!!!!!!
'Dig' the groovy Scatman - perfect for this video! Nothing from Mark McGwire? Back in the days when I played cricket at school, anyone scoring a six was also 'out'. If anyone hit the ball out of the playing field into someone's garden they had to go round and fetch it! LONG walk, too. Taught us to be circumspect in our attitude to playing versus simply showing off. Happy days. :-)
Hey What happen to Reggie Jackson All Star Game Bomb out of Tiger Stadium or Bond's Bomb during the world series against the Angels? Just Kidding, I know we can't get them all. Great Video, it is most definitely Appreciate it.
I remember sitting and watching this one live. Ironically it was one of the few times a year I happened to watch a Cubs game, and I remember the HR specifically out of all that I have ever seen before.
his longest at Wrigley actually came with the Mets on April 14, 1976. Hit the 5th house down Waveland and almost broke a window of someone watching the game....on their TV in the house.
I was in North Carolina at the time. Could always rely on the Cubs for day baseball while playing at Wrigley. Helped kill a couple summers during high school breaks. Cubs sported a very good Bill Buckner at first base before his infamous BOSOX mistake in 86' against the Mets. Hopefully the SOX have forgiven him after all these years.
