Welcome back to Game Dev Academy! In today's class I'll show you everything you need to know to create a landscape blend material using Megascans materials in Unreal Engine 5.1! The material makes use of material functions and instancing to ensure it's flexible enough to be changed in real-time.

fun fact: if you have created the terrain in a terrain generator like GAEA you can make some masks in GAEA and import them to UNREAL so you don't have to paint it manually. all you have to do is after all that in the video, you go to "landscape mode", and them "manage", when you are in manage you will see the layers options, you must click to activate and them click in the 3-point icon and select the masks. hit import and all the materials will be displayed

@@GameDevAcademy there’s a free version that is very good. That is the version that I’m currently using, the only problem is that you cannot make a higher resolution terrain than 1024 if you want 2k or 4K there’s a 200Usd license.

@@GameDevAcademy You can buy the Indie version for 100$ and then upgrade it to Professional if you like it. And the licenses are Perpetual so for a useful tool like Gaea it's worth every penny. Oh and great Tutorial Thanks for all the info :)

@@GameDevAcademy you can try it for Free - however there are caveats ie. resolution size at 1K only. I personally use World Creator which is awesome!

Hi, Thanks for making this easy to understand. I am having an issue when I tried to change one of the texture maps to a different megascan material. For some reason, the normal isn't matching the tiling of the albedo texture. It is locked at a specific scale. Have you ever had this problem? Thanks

Great tutorial, exactly what I wanted. Now how do I get the displacement to work??? I've got it set up and working in a complex master material that doesnt contain material functions, landscape set to nanite and all that. but with the material function setup it doesnt work.

Hi and thank you for the tutorial. Can you help a noob out with unreal 5.2 preview 2 who gives error - Error: [SM6] (Node BreakMaterialAttributes) Cannot connect a non MaterialAttributes node to a MaterialAttributes pin. It worked until they updated the engine i whould like to know how to fix it.

Hey I need some help guys, I am new to everything but I was wondering if I am making a gun in maya what should I model separately? As I need the gun to work in unreal with a magazine and maybe some animation when reloading. I was wondering if someone could answer the question for me or if game dev could make a video on how to do this

Came back to this to see if I missed something, hopefully GDA can perhaps see this and offer a fix- I put a landscape material together just like you explained, and am now trying to go back and edit things to add new layers, but I cannot get the end result Material Instance to actually output the new layers. like they're simply not existing within the Instance.

Its not working for me, once i add all the textures and stuff the outcome for every layer shows as being the master material tilling, any ideas whats wrong??

for some reason i only have 2 layers in the material instance. do you know what might be causing this? Edit: I fixed it. just had to restart a couple of times

Could someone please help me with a blend material problem? I followed the tutorial and whenever I save the material turns black (just like the layer info isnt created but it is) when I change the material to a uniform one and back to bland material it works in the editor. But next time I save or play the standalone game it goes back to black. I was trying to solve this issue for the past 2 days. Should I just use a different blend material workflow or can someone please help me?

not exactly what I was expecting. good tutorial but I guess when you meant layer blending there was a way for it to take in the normal or slope information, and automatically add the appropriate material to those areas of the landscape.

this material and other landscape materials when applied to ue 5.4.2 are all white, dont know why, anyone have any ideas? strange., i have rtx on, maybe this is why or there is a bug in updated version

Hi, and thanks for this! Is it ever desirable to use 4k or 8k texture? Mostly I hear it's overkill, just curious what your thoughts are.

I wouldn't recommend using textures with such high resolutions for games (yet). You can get the same level of sharpness by using lower resolution textures along with some cool tricks to hide tiling and blend them. I think it might be beneficial to use the very high resolution textures for uses such a movies though.

@@gil6970 3D Artists here, usually 2K, 4K if you really need some upclose shots, 2K is the standard nowdays

@@kendarr thank you mate. I’m making an ancient Roman game. I did 2k for like doors and pillars, props. For the walls and floor materials since it covers a lot and the player will always be close to them. I did 4k. Do you think it’ll be overkill to use 4k on floor and walls?

@@GameDevAcademy Question. My Quixel is installing my materials as virtual textures (VT). Easy enough to change them to normal but A: does it matter? Will this work with virtual textures just the same, and B) is there a way to tell quixel to NOT install them as VTs? Edit: Hmm... I didn't realize I had activated VT on import in my project settings... I'll just turn that off

This seems to be over complicated. I just create a new material, pull in the textures needed then use landscape layer coordinates and layer blend nodes for Albedo, Normals, AO and roughness. Then the same, create weight blended layers.
