@@johnclay4811 Impressed. I learned in mid 1970's, also before CNC but was never taught how or needed to make balls. I do remember instructor going 'nuts' about helix angles though when doing threads, particularly multi start
@@1crazypj Hi I started in 1974 everything was done to a rad gauge but you are right, i think i made 2 or 3 in 60 odd years. From memory you had to have special tackle on the lathe to do multi start threads, only the more modern lathes could cope. Doing a long thread on a conventional lathe took you the thick end of a day. Do it on a CNC lathe 10 mins! There was a change from skilled lathe man to CNC operator , i am not saying that is bad it is just handy now and again how to do the job manually. Cheers
@@johnclay4811 We just used a 1" travel dial indicator and wound top-slide required amount. I never made anything bigger than 1" Whitworth though 'in the real world'
@@Paktechsolution I guess that how long I can expect to live after putting part with this kind of repair back in. I wouldn't live long enough to collect on warranty.
Those Balljoints Must Be Impossible To Get Or So Expensive To Do All That Work . Also From Memory They Dont Go Together Like That , The Ball Goes Together Though The Bottom Not The Top And They Should Also Be Sprung Loaded .
Well, go back to the start and you will see it went baak together the same way it came apart......And for what they pay these too and die grade craftsman they cant afford a new part. ,,,,, and just for the record , I have been building stock cars and racing sports cars for over 60 years and the next ball joint I see with a spring in it will be the first one I have ever see with a spring. Heim joints have no spring either.
@@mathewmolk2089 I have a pre war Riley all the ball joints on that have springs in them. Dunno how long that will last with nylon though. Fair play to him getting his motor back on the road
@@mathewmolk2089 I understand what he means. I always thought that the ball part was pushed in from the rear of the bracket. The ball then has less chance of popping out through it. The way it is done here, if it was a lower joint then it will pull out of there as soon as weight is put on it. Its only held in place by him hammering those edges. As far as nylon goes, ive seen them in all the ball joints ive pulled apart. This channel shows amazing skills, but i wouldnt trust in the quality of steel and other material used.
Really admire your problem solving and willingness to tackle a project that others wouldnt ever think of taking on. i always learn something from your videos keep it up!
Hate to think of the damage done to the spindle bearing in that lathe when he welded up the ball socket in the chuck. Where was the earth cable. In the west that would be a $1000 worth of labor and machining to product a $50 ball joint that if broke in service may kill people and get you sued for a million dollars and a term in prison. Permissible in an off road vehicle you drove your self ,that never drove on a road or high way .After the welding the forged steel would be seriously compromised if not heat treated properly.
@ibmal7428 Running an arc through spindle bearings will destroy them in no time ,making the chuck loose or notchy, making lathe work inaccurate. My boss would have sacked me and run me of the place for doing such disrespectful things to his machines. Ball joints must very expensive there to go to this much trouble for a joint that would be dangerous and wear out fast. When the high spots wear off in a few thousand kms they will be loose wearing your tyres out.
The amazing part is they were able to get the cup that fits over the ball 1:59, the retainer that fits below the ball 23:39, & the nylon inserts. we might get the grease fitting & with some difficulty the seal.
Неужели восстановление этого хлама стоит того. Сварка, плюс токарка, плюс материал, плюс электроэнергия, плюс работа рабочего, даже если учесть что они рабы и работают за пахлебку и то. Какая нищая страна...
This guy is FAR too skilled to be rebuilding $50 ball joints (And i bet they only pay him 2 bucks a pop) - if he wants to cross the border I'll pay for his room and board,,,,and give him a job at 80 grand plus a year,,,,,because he would make me 180 large a year. - One of the main reasons i sold my millwright business and retired is because you can't get skilled men any more for money marbles or chalk,,,,,,and here they are working in foreign countries that are going to kick our ass because we replaces industrial arts with diversity and urban studies. God help the USA, because nobody else is. Turning spheres with out a ball turning attachment. ,,,,, We are in a lot of trouble.
First world economies don't need this kind of skilled labour as much as third world economies. Get out of the dark ages. Automation was ahead of this 40 years ago.
Bruce, you really don't have a clue, do you? You think he is wearing Ho Chi Minh sandals and working on a dirt floor because he is making $50 an hour and the shop just completed a 200 Mil aerospace contract? BTW, What kind of a lathe do you run or are you on the CMM in the QC department? ,,,, I's give that guy a job in our shop in an eyeblink. (See my comment below)
This is the stupidest most dangerous bodge I've ever seen. The ball joint cup is a high tensile drop forged steel part and has been softened and weakened by this poor attempt to repair a disposable part. It will last a few hours or days before it fails again and could put lives at risk. A brand new part costs less than £15 why waste time making a bad repair 😂
