The final game in Round 5 of the 2024 Rugby Championship was played in Santiago del Estero in Argentina this weekend.
Hosts Argentina were taking on the World Champions and current Rugby Championship standings leaders South Africa.
South African Head coach Rassie Erasmus had made a few changes to his traveling squad and it was going to be interesting to see how they would go up against a very spirited Los Pumas team.
Argentina had last time out completed a very comfortable win over the Australian Wallabies in Sant Fe so they were ready and motivated to take on the Springboks.
In this Post Game Show on Inside Rugby with Mark I take a deep look at the game, look at the games pivotal moments and then discuss some of the players who stood out and who didnt.
Thank you so much for supporting my channel, by watching my videos and dont forget if you enjoy the content why not subscribe for more.

As a South African and Bok fan and intially disappointed, on reflection I am delighted for Argentina! Beating, NZ, SA and Australia this year coming back yesterday from that initial Bok blitz , they showed grit, quality and heart to fight back with some incredible, beautiful rugby. I am a Bok fan and also happy to lose to a very good Argentine team! Well played Pumas. It's also a not a bad thing for the Boks. Rassie will have some answers regarding certain players in a high stress/tight match situation. They will have learnt heaps from this game and many of our 'fringe' Boks got some valuable experience

hola Mark! I m from north Argentina and I was in the stadium yesterday. One detail: Santiago del Estero has the climate of a desert. There's no humidity there (like NEVER). Yesterday it was very hot as usual, but of course very dry. Always interested on your comments. Our Pumas are growing and yesterday it was a very emotional game for us. I' m from Tucuman, near Santiago. Here rugby is very popular. The players M. Carreras, Albornoz, Gallo and Garcia are from Tucuman also. Greetings and thanks!

An Argentinian also living in Mexico here… Congrats for your videos! I enjoy them very much: detailed and smart analyses, going deep on the strategic and tactical. Looking forward to the match in SA next week: dont think we can get a win there, but looking much more to how they fare, if they can keep the Boks to a 14~ lead only, and mostly, if they can keep that free-flowing rugby we saw in the first half: NEVER saw that from our Pumas: astonishing to see them passing like that and changing angles of attack. If they continue this play consistently (that’s the catch), maybe we will see an Argentina side in a final in a RWC… considering our record and current standing in football… that would be a dream

Fully agree with your comments, Mark! I had predicted SA by 20-30, and after 10 minutes I felt pretty disappointed that I was going to be right....! The heat was atrocious, but luckyly it was only 35°C instead of the forecasted 40°C! The Ref did not have any significant impact on the score (a 7 of 10, and potential to be a great Ref!). After the match both teams headed for Tucuman and boarded a charter flight to SA! The atmosphere must have been electric in that cabin! In 7 days I now expect a very different scenario. Kremer is injured unfortunately, so now will be a good chance for Contepomi to see who can fill in Kremer`s boots. The Argentine bench was not as powerfull as the SA bench, but Delgado (the word means "skinny") at 135 kg did very well, and so did Gonzales. On Sep 28th, again I believe SA by 25-35, unless my soothsayer cat circles me again anti-clockwise, as she did yesterday and the day we beat ABs....👀🏉
@gc4610
@gc4610 День назад
As an AB fan this is a good outcome for both teams. Argentina to understand that consistency & composure is all they need. Springboks to see where certain individuals are. Loss tends to cause a cutthroat reaction… is it necessary to drop individuals after a close loss? Good luck Pumas, going to have to deal with one pissed off Boks team next game 😬😬.

Hi Mark. It's always good to hear an unbiased voice. Firstly, kudos to Argentina, they played phenomenal rugby and deserved the win. On to the Bok performance. Something stuck with me after watching Chasing the Sun 2, and that was Willie le Roux saying that people don't think about the toll that a 7-1 split takes on the backline players. It's not just the injury risk, you expect your backline defence to hold for a full 80 minutes without fresh legs. Now we had a 6-2 split, but the fact remains, when you know it's going to 37'C and you're playing a team who likes running rugby, your backline defence is going to crumble due to attrition. The 6-2, the 7-1, definitely has a place and it's great innovative coaching, but horses for courses. Pollard is a phenomenal BMT player, but his fitness was concerning. He was visibly gassed. First-time tackling and tackle dominance was a concern, highlighting, what we all know, that PSD is an immense and irreplaceable talent in the Springbok team, same with Kolbe and DeAllende. The Puma's attacking structure was the perfect antidote for a rush defence, with the backline first receivers standing deep with the second receivers running in from even deeper. Rassie can say that it shouldn't have been on Manie Libbok to make that final kick but let's face it, world rugby is more closely contested than ever and your goal kicker will routinely be put in a position to make those high-pressure kicks. From France, England, and the ABs, right through the RC (except Australia) Springbok victories have been tight affairs. You must have a goal kicker who can perform under pressure.

Vamos Argentina indeed! Wow what a game. I nearly called it on your last video that Argentina could nail this one if the game is close coming into the last 15 mins. And the game was close for most of it but I just thought the Boks would finish it with a try or penalty which nearly happened...I feel sorry for Libbock...he actually had a good game but just felt the pressure too much for that kick I think. When the Boks went 17-0 up they should have put the game to bed. They didn't. Libbock can't be blamed for that. Bring on Round 2 where I'm sure Rassie will bring on all the big guns but if there is ever a chance for Los Pumas to win the RC this is it. What a great weekend of rugby. Kudos also to the Wallabies for an amazing comeback against the AB's but just fell short. They'll be up for it in Wellington no doubt. Wait! Two thrillers await!! Bring it on!

There is a legacy that goes along with being a coach and player for the all blacks that is you are involved with the greatest team in the history of sport, with the highest ever winning margin of any team in sport ever. The Jordie injury might be a blessing in disguise with regard to the ALB and Proctor midfield combination. Barret @ flyhalf. Sititi @ 8 and Ardie as flanker. Argentina confirms that The Bokke /Bomb squad is not invincible after all. They can be dismantled with quality running rugby where opportunities are turned into points. All Blacks surely will be moral boosted and the Argentinians confirmed that as little missed opportunities where possible is enough to get the desired outcome. Thank you

Much like other comments here, as a Bok supporter I have a lot of respect for the way Arg played and they deserve the win! Not going to use this as an excuse BUT if this was a world cup final, obviously the Bok team would be very different AND Pollard would have taken that last kick. Rassie is definitely building depth and giving other people an opportunity to be faced with high pressure moments. If Manie plays in a big game (still think he's a top playmaker), then I think Rassie will have either Pollard at 12 or Sacha at fullback. Not going to blame Manie for this loss though. Arg were the better team! The other one is Moerat. I think he has been a bit of a hunch call for Rassie... can't say he has been a stand out lock but he obviously has some good leadership qualities that Rassie sees. But needs to start playing at a higher level - I think Rassie is learning things about him as a result of putting him in high pressure games! Same as guys like Ben Jason Dixon, Jan Hendrik Wessels etc. So a lot to learn even if we didn't win! Well done Pumas!

Argentina also missed the mark, so using Manie as an excuse is for losers. The only truth is reality and the reality is that we played better and we won.🇦🇷

Epic for Argentina! So good to see a new potential rugby super power emerging. South Africa could and should have won, but Rassie's genius works in mysterious ways! I really think with a bit more experience for some of the Argentinian team, they will be an unstoppable force in the very near future. It would be great if they could, as you said, inspire some of the other South American countries to really start coming to the table and open up a whole new circuit of top level rugby

First time I saw the Boks live, it was many years ago at Velez Sardfield stadium at Buenos Aires. It looked like they were playing a different game than Los Pumas. And after minute 60 Los Pumas just were not able to follow their game skills and strength. It's amazing how much this has changed over the years and now we can play 80 minutes head to head. I was reluctant when I heard about Contepomi as head coach, but the play, the spirit and the bench (as you pointed out in your great review) make me realize that I was wrong. And when I heard him stating that Los Pumas need to start working on the fact that these Tier 1 wins should not be exceptional / epic, but possible, he got a new supporter. This is the way, I'd say. Believe it or not, Los Pumas is facing a Rugby Championship final with the Boks. For sure the Boks are the candidates and have the advantage. PS: I still can't believe that we were not able to close the 1st match against the Wallabies. What a pity! PS2: The Boks will not forgive us again the loss of 2 line-outs in their 25 with a couple of minutes left in the watch.

Great analysis! Moerat - not seen yet why Rassi is backing him, not as captain, nor as aggressive attacking lock. Manie sadly does not have BMT- critical at this level. Fassi played to much like a wing, would have been better if he played the more classical waiting -scouting game of fullback. Missed De Allende, Siya, Pieter Steph. However- this is a marathon, not a sprint. Rassie busy with succession planning for 2027. Agree- he got a few answers- as crazy Springboks fan- we want to win every battle! We forget, you have to lose some battles to win the war. It takes a very brave coach to stick to his guns- Rassie is that man 2019, 2023 is the result. Now he is preparing for 2027. Lastly Los Pumas - well done! You deserved the win, traditional rugby giants be afraid, be very afraid Los Pumas is not going away.

The Springboks did okay under the circumstances. I'd say the only true disappointment was Lukanyo Am at inside center. He looked relatively lethargic, and a lot of the missed tackles came in that channel that he was supposed to cover. Clearly De Allende is the first-choice for a reason.

It's a great win for Argentina. The Boks needed a wake-up call. They couldnt keep up this close game winning streak. They are better than 1 pointers and they need to show it. I despise the hate Mannie is coping here with the ugly memes circulating. Yes it's his job to nail hight pressure kicks but no one is more dissapointed with him than himself. Leave the oke alone. I have no doubt the Boks will win in our back yard come Saturday. Green & GOLD ❤

One good takeaway from the game is that Libbok has now confirmed he is not an option for the Boks. BMT cannot be coached. You either have it or you don't and I feel he has had his chances now.

Argentina humbled our mighty Boks - I’m just confused as to why Rassie continues giving Libbok game time when we have two great flyhalves playing for the Sharks and Lions who deserve an opportunity and game time. I’m all up for making changes to build a full 33 man squad - but PLEASE select players who have BMT 🙏🏻

Exactly mark. Rassie didn't abort the greater plan. There's a confidence in losing that remains a winning formula. He made the changes where he could have folded and kept the guaranteed game winners on...and gained no deeper knowledge. Love the way that Argentina front up. I didn't think the card was fair but the Argies were good enough to capitalise. Best game of the tournament. However, I reckon Rassie will put it to bed in the next game. It'll be a big winning margin for the boks. I feel for Manie. I fear his lack of clutch has now become a self fulfilling prophecy. Which I don't think it was until that kick.

I think people have to be realistic about Razor's situation. It's all well and good to ask him to play a bunch of new players, but imagine he lost the Bledisloe for the first time since 2002? Lost again to Arg in Auckland and ended Fortress Eden Park? The exact same people asking him to blood new players now would be calling for his head and he'd be under immense pressure. It's a lose-lose
@insiderugbywithmark
@insiderugbywithmark День назад
@mierypesado6740 Thanks for your comment. Lets have a look at it. ¨ ask him to play a bunch of new players ¨. , in my case, I am not asking him to play a bunch of new players. I am asking him to try some new players in key positions, and to stop playing people out of position. If the All Blacks lose several tests because Razor is trying to find his best team thats up to the All Blacks fans to deal with, not Razor. His job is to win the 2027 RWC. What would you take, a loss at Eden Park ( which by the way will eventually happen) or a World Cup trophy.

Was one of those Saffers that called this match in favour of Argentina... Actually I thought firstly that The Pumas are a far better team that their ranking suggests ..Beating ABs in NZ no small feat ..Also I feel that the musical chairs selection policy of Rassie particularly the vital 9 and 10 spots is borderline reckless and has left the Boks vulnerable..Home ground gave Argies the edge ...But think Boks will bounce back hard in the return ..So all good. ..

Pumas were the deserved winners for scoring 4 quick tries and destroying the Boks defence left and right of the field. Boks will lose a couple of games a year while rightly experimenting with new players. They seem to have taken their foot off the paddle after scoring 17 quick points and this a collective flaw. The Bok players who didnt rise to the occasion are easy to point out and this is a positive for the coaching team. Libbok made 2 costly kicking mistakes in 30 minutes while starring in other facets pf flyhalf play, but what cost us the game were poor lineouts & poor defence in missed tackles & bad reading of the Pumas play on attack by back players. Kolbe was sorely missed as was De Allende. Upfront, Moerat's work rate is still lagging & the captaincy is too much for him to deal with. Wiese seemed to play in limp mode, and PSDT was missed in the loose forward play. This test is a good wake up call to the Boks and a huge boost to Los Pumos who could fill the void created by the lackluster wallaby performaces. It is a good result for world rugby.
