New semi-aquatic paludarium setup for some juvenile salamanders.
This build incorporates the use of an existing 40 gallon breeder aquarium. Steps were to 1) empty the tank and thoroughly clean, 2) drill two 1/2 inch bulkheads for filter intake / return and a 1/4 inch hole in the glass, 3) create structure using egg crate diffuser and silicone all into tank, 4) sterilize all hardscape materials, 5) create hardscape using aforementioned materials and securing into place using silicone and expanding foam, 6) incorporating both aquatic and terrestrial substrate, 7) utilizing both aquatic and terrestrial plants and finally adding aquatic and terrestrial clean up crews.
Lights: Nicrew planted tank light
Filter: Fluval 207 Canister Filter
Bulkheads: 1/2 inch double threaded
Fittings: 1/2 inch male tee for vinyl hose attachment
Hose: 1/2 inch clear vinyl hose
Materials: rock (mainly slate) and various driftwoods
Substrate: terrestrial (similar to ABG mix) aquatic (sand, Flourite Dark and smashed up slate and some stream pebbles)
Plants: mention all of them at the end of the video (both terrestrial and aquatic plants)
Cleanup Crew: Springtails (terrestrial) and Nerite Snails (aquatic)

Really informative and professional. Awesome tank. Really reminds me of some Northern Spring and Dusky habitat I’ve stumbled upon here in the northeast. Looking forward to next vid!

Loved your shoutout to Tanner, he’s an amazing scaper and aquarist. Also, in my experience with vinyl tubing,......when it stays coiled, it has “memory”. Hot azz water or straight hot sunlight, will help it uncoil and lose memory. I have in the past, hung tubing between my storm door and main door,...it got cooked STRAIGHT to how I needed it. Just an FYI.

Old video, but you can use a heat gun to form the vinyl hose.

if you want to be able to easily Bend and get the tubing to stay where it's at you can throw it in your dryer with some clothes for a bit and it'll become nice and soft

Amazing build, but how did you control the temperature of the water cause I know it can’t be above 69 for the water
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887
My tanks are in my basement, so temps are always cool

Wow! that took a ton of time. totally worth the effort. Thanks for sharing the build. What lighting are you using and where do you source your water wicking mesh?
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 2 года назад
Thanks! Just basic LEDs. Water wicking mesh was kind of like speaker fabric

Such a beautiful job! I'm curious about the maintenance of the water portion. With your clean up crew, how often will you need to clean/replace the water? Whats your process there? Thanks for sharing!

@@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 Thats great info, thanks! Im I've just finished setting up a bioactive arid viv and am planning my tropical one next. Im so torn about whether I want water or not. But seeing ones like yours that require minimal maintenance is really reassuring.

Just discovered your channel. Great content, great artistry. I had someone tell me a long time ago that it's difficult to silicone or bond acrylic with glass. How did this hold up over time?
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 2 года назад
Thanks! It’s been ok. This one had some leaks, but wasn’t because of the silicone adhering to glass / acrylic. My drip wall water found it’s way to my false bottom.

Maybe put the tube in warm water helps too get it flexible

Where did you get this slate? Is it like a tile or some kind of paving block?
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 8 месяцев назад
Natural slate tile. I think from maybe Home Depot. Broke it up and soaked it in water and rinsed many times prior to use

For the water do you have to just put a filter in it?
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887

I mainly use canister filters for all of my paludariums

I saw in another video that you dont like drip walls now?
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887
@slitheringsalamanderscapes6887 5 месяцев назад
I like them, but the conditions need to be optimal to avoid cyanobacteria. I've noticed on smaller enclosures with drip walls I had higher incidents of cyanobacteria. The bigger the enclosure the less likely for whatever reason. Just a huge pain to try and get rid of it and / or rebuild.
