Sharing all things amphibian including DIY tutorials for paludarium, terrarium and aquarium habitats. Also, providing care guides for certain amphibian species and sharing excursion videos documenting amphibians in the wild. Look forward to sharing my experiences and adventures with you!
I use great Stuff pond and stone and then bought some speaker mesh that I originally glued into the enclosure for moss. Don’t know the brand name….off of Amazon
Cool! Hey I made wild life pond outside which was going well until the tadpoles moved out and now there’s mosquito larva. I want to put eastern newts in it but should I buy them online or catch them in the wild?
Thanks! I would see if anyone has any that they are breeding or re-homing before collecting in the wild. Also, make sure (I don’t know where you have the pond) they are native to your state, because if they are not then they shouldn’t be within that ecosystem outside. I’m guessing they do live where you are located, so in that case shouldn’t be a problem.
Dude. I know this video is 3+ years old but man what a great walkthrough. I recently came across a 1.5" Green Frog froglet while herping who is missing an eye and a leg- I couldn't help but bring him/her in. Knowing s/he will be growing faster than i anticipate, i wanted to dive into exactly how naturalistic paludariums are built. So many tutorials skip over steps that are assumed must already be known, such as parts used for a canister filter. THANK YOU for being so thorough and easy to follow! My little mutant green frog and I have been blessed with your generosity in making this video! It'll be quite the feat to accomplish this on a 75 gallon scale, but i can't commit to something unless it's done RIGHT, and you provided me with the opportunity to do so! You're the best!
i have watched the chanel for a while and i just want to say that you seem like a really nice dude and also a very inpirational one. you make some of the coolest builds and you totally deserve more subs
I too started on making a more aquatic setup for my 2 lines. I found one in the water bowl and thought it drown but was just chilling underwater 😅. Unfortunately I went with the silicone route and only doing a layer at a time then waiting a day to cure. I have taken a lot of inspiration from your builds and indoor ecosystems was super helpful with his brook salamander knowledge. TY GUYS! I probably should have taken more footage but this is my first waterfall so I expect many issues and delays hopefully by the weekend I can have the water feature running and get the tank cycled
This channel is so cool and amazing and I love all the amazing builds you create, they are so intricate and detailed and inspire me to do stuff like this. I don't really know any other channels like this, especially dedicated to one of my favourite animals, salamanders. Keep up the amazing work and the beautiful builds!
I like it and you did a beautiful job. I wish you breed Salamanders because some places they are so expensive and over price fire belly salamander for $300.
It looks cool! I have a similar looking zoo med vertical tank for my green tree frogs. Do you have any suggestions for keeping a salamander enclosure cool for the summer? I live in Georgia and it gets really hot here this time of year. I don't want my salamander to get stressed with the heat.
Thanks! I keep them in a room in my basement that never gets over low 70s. Usually in the 60s. Some people use chillers etc and they seem to work well. If possible, keep them in the coolest area of your home, which should help.
You could I guess. I don’t, but if researched and conditions are similar for habitat, assuming all animals disease free etc. I don’t cohabitate or really keep any frogs, so I’m not really sure
Awesome build man, i love it. I would never have thought that the northern reds liked to climb so much. Being in Pseudotriton (mud salamanders) .VS. Aneides (climbing salamanders)
Thank you! Yeah, I think in the wild, you typically wouldn’t see, although I’ve found them under debris in overhangs near seeps. I have observed them (in captivity), climbing all over, and am guessing they are just trying to take advantage of the amount of space within the enclosures
Caught you on Project Herpoculture. Great interview! You and I have similar backgrounda and very similar aspirations, however I'm at least a decade older. Less work, more vivariums is a great way to sunset life. Keep up the great work!
I have a question and you seem really well-informed about these kinds of amphibians. What’s the difference between a salamander and a newt? My local pet store has some yellow spotted newts for sale and I thought they’d be a cool pet to have after enough research, but I can only find care guides for salamanders! Should the habitat be more water than land or more land than water? What do I feed them? How much do they grow? How many can I have in one enclosure? Can you co-hab with fish? So many questions and all the answers are so confusing!
Newts are all salamanders, but not all salamanders are newts! I’m not really familiar with yellow spotted newts. Most newts are mostly aquatic, but it really depends on the type. I don’t typically cohabitate w fish for a number of reasons, but not saying it can’t be done.
Assuming that 'yellow spotted newt' refers to Neurergus crocatus, Caudata Culture has a care guide available. As a keeper of this species, I recommend cold, alkaline water with a bulkhead for current (they appreciate current), and for decor clean limestone pieces and fine sand with floating aquatic plants. For food, mine prefer nightcrawler pieces, but live California blackworms are also appreciated if you can get them (these are quite expensive where I am, so nightcrawlers are a fantastic staple). You will likely need a chiller and a pump system.
Thank you for referring me to this video from the last you responded to just this morning! I did some reserch and im pretty certain its legal for me to have my little dude. He loves his earth worms and crikets too! I have some native species of plants in his current enclosure but he spends his nights terraforming his enclusure so do you have a way to protect the plants? Also despite mine being an adult would it be beneficial to have a small water feature aside from just a pool since yours seem so thrilled being in theirs (as thrilled as those muppet faces can get, loved that)
I agree with you saying Eastern Red-spotted Newts spending time on land. When I go to Vermont in the summer I help full grown adults cross the road on misty/rainy mornings.
I just got a salamander and have a moderate base tank for him to chill in while i figure something out permanent. You have salamander i see, do you have any tips on an enclosure? Its not my first time with a reptile or amphibians but it is my first time with a salamander so im slightly oit of my depth. Hes an eastern tiger salamander, he eats well despite being wild caught (unfortunate circumstances). If you have any tips for an enclosure that would be amazing!
Sure. I would watch this video from a few years ago I shared on Tiger Salamander basics. Talks about setup / needs etc. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fXTdoxaYGFs.htmlsi=GMzA4_Mg2DlIuzTx
