Part 1: We headed into Connemara (County Mayo) to ride the amazing road (and my favourite road) along Doo Lough on the Wild Atlantic Way. Doo Lough is one of the Wild Atlantic Way Discovery Points.
Great Roads, an amazing scenery but Doo Lough Valley has a tragic history to it that occurred in March 1849 during the great famine.

One amendment you should make clear. The ‘authorities’ were not Irish - they were the British Government. U.K. ruled and occupied Ireland for centuries. The native Irish were the lowest class under this system. Most were tenant farmers and cottiers, with no legal protections whatsoever. The landowners were Protestant English settlers and their descendants. This minority (~10%) ruled Ireland like a fiefdom until early 20th Century. What they did in Ireland was beyond horrific, approaching evil.

Thank you for pointing this out. I keep coming across similar vids to this explaining a carefully selected history of Ireland. For some strange reason they always fail to mention that it was English people who did this, leaving an inaccurate impression that the Irish did it to themselves. There is a major problem in the English psyche that they have never come to terms with their own history. It is good to correct their inaccurate explanations in a simple and non-blaming style as you have done here. Thank you.

The English committed Genocide and murdered 2.000,000 innocent Irsh men women and children by deliberate starvation and halfed the population of Ireland 175 yrs ago.

Remember it wasn't all one sided. Here in north east Ulster some landowners had work schemes where workers were fairly paid and fed. In many cases building schools for the workers children.

Despite the sadness, all we can do now is to respect, remember and honour those connected to this tragic history. The scenery is absolutely amazing and I am happy to follow your channel progress and ongoing improvements. The audio is top notch, the sound track complements the footage and shoots are breathtaking. Well done Sister !

So so sad mans cruel and evil ways not a care in the world for these innocent starving men women and children .I hope the English landlords went straight to hell, and the good English people of today most know nothing of this cruelty. This is one of my favourite places in Ireland and the sheeffry pass just left after that coffee stop is just amazing. Thank you.

Another good one👍 even though I'm familiar with a lot of the roads You ride it's good to see them on video. Thanks for reading out the inscription on the memorial, that was one of the many shameful episodes in Irish history. Safe riding. Btw the people of Westport like to refer to that square as "The Octagon" ......🤣

Everyday you learn something new 😊 didn't know they call it The Octagon. Just shows that I'm rarely there 🙈 at the moment we stay in the area for day trips only, but glad you enjoy the videos even though the area is familiar 💚

@@talesfromthebike Looking forward to The Sheeffry Hills, I haven't been on that road. In Donegal the square is sometimes referred to as "The Diamond"

Absolutely beautiful scenery!! What an amazing place to ride. The Famine story is so sad, for so many reasons, such a shame to know something like that was allowed to happen. Looking forward to watching the video from the the pass! I love how you mixed in the different music, very well done!

Just stumbled across your channel. I just completed the WAW south to north and went through Doolough to Westport. Louisburgh is pronounced "Louisburra" similar to "Edinburgh" in Scotland, "Burgh" sounding like "Burra" without the "G" at the end. Never mind that as the filming was great and I stopped at that very memorial and thought just how lucky are we riding through here with money in our pockets and not wondering when our next meal will come. It was tough times back then and short life expectancy. I can tell by your accent that you are not native Irish, almost sound Scandinavian, where are you based in Ireland?

Hi, thanks for watching and your comment. We are located in Co. Sligo. You guessed correct that Diana has an accent, she is a native German speaker :) (Trevor)

Doo lough Valley, with all the money and power the Brits had , they chose to display their utter lack of Humanity and left people to die of starvation on the roadside. These are our neighbours😢
