Cook Island, also known as Turtle Island and by the indigenous name of Joong-urra-narrian, is an island in Northern New South Wales (Australia) located on the state's north coast about 600 metres north-east of Fingal Head and is located approximately 600 metres off shore from Fingal Head and approximately four kilometres south-east of the Tweed river mouth. It is a small volcanic island with the area of just 4.6 ha (11 acres). It is a protected area and a home for thousands of birds that represent 12 migratory and 11 fauna species.
The island is a part of a larger 80 ha Cook Island Aquatic Reserve, which is known for its turtle cleaning station and a large colony of green sea turtles.
The Cook Island Aquatic Reserve is a popular scuba diving and snorkelling spot with a huge diversity of marine life. The variety of hard and soft corals and sea weed covered rocks form the underwater landscape of this area, which is populated by colourful reef fish including stripy, butterfly fish, anemone fish (Nemo’s cousins). Large aquatic animals like stingrays, wobbegongs and leopard sharks can also be frequently spotted here.
Stunningly, on this dive trip with Gold Coast Dive Adventures (goldcoastdivea...) we encountered not only these beautiful marine animals, but also two amazing giant Manta rays that are far less common in the area! Mantas were so friendly, that they let divers very closed for a nice footage of manta selfie! Other highlights of the dive included beautiful lionfish, wobbegongs, colourful reef and anemone fish, eels and of course turtles! All filmed with GoPro Hero10.
