Hi Kathy, there were joined scallops by the dozen, and it's amazing how each of the two sides of scallops can be different colors and hues! Thanks for coming along!
What an incredible shelling adventure. I loved seeing the scallops with both halves attached. It’s interesting the two sides have different coloration. Thanks for sharing! Your videos are great.
Wowzer. Great vid. That is some fine shelling, sir! I am so envious. All those whelks and beautiful bright bay scallops...maybe some aquaculture seeding around there, to produce those scallop colors?
Hi Bird Winter, what an interesting point about the aquaculture seeding - it's quite possible. This is hands down the best place I have ever been for Bay Scallops. It's like Sanibel Island but all Bay Scallops haha!
@@solaceinshelling6552 After searching on the internet, I found the answer: There is a massive scallop restoration program based in Orient Harbor led by Cornell Cooperative Extension (claims to be the biggest scallop restoration effort in the US). They have introduced millions of hatchery-raised babies into this area over many years, so that’s where the bright colors are coming from. In 2019 and 2020, almost the entire adult scallop population died off in the area, so that would put a lot of shells on the beach-the cause of the die-offs is still being investigated. Interesting reading.
Thank you so much! You went shelling in the cold so I didn't have to! Can't believe all the scallops and whelks you found in one place. We live on the CT shore of LI sound and see them but not so many! And none orange so far. I love the way you hold up the shell so I can guess what it is and THEN tell the name instead of revealing the name right away. Makes it more fun. Look forward to your next shelling!
I loved reading your comment here! This beach is littered with so much Shelly goodness! Thanks for the observation around presenting the shells to the camera - I'll definitely continue to do this!
Hello! I was honestly surprised too at the number of shells here - it's amazing how some locations can be hit or miss like that... Thank you for watching the content!
Great video and great finds! I would have been there for hours digging through those piles! So hard to resist picking up all of those beautiful scallops.
Thanks for the great shelling day. Beautiful whelks and colorful scallops! So many to choose from! I never found such an orange channeled whelk either. Winter shelling is great! 🐚🧜🏻♀️
Great day of shelling! I could have spent hours there the scallops were so beautiful and huge compared to what I have ever found! I saw you found some solace too which is always a good thing! Thanks
I hope your clam shells didnt break on the way back. The ones that were still together in one piece. I was quite surprised the diffence of color from top n bottom!
Hello! Well, honestly the best time to shell at any beach would typically be low tide because there is so much more surface exposed. With that said, it all really depends on the tides, weather and luck! I have been to some beaches that are supposed to be the best in the world for shelling, and found very little. I have also been to some random places and had great luck. Get out there, explore and you won't be disappointed!
Hi friend! To answer your question truthfully, most of the time I don't know where to go, haha! Much of the exploring I do is just that... but that's why I try to share as much of the sights and sounds of the places I explore, in the content I create for this channel. When I was about 12 years old and just becoming interested in shell collecting, I read about this particular place in a book called "The Art of Shelling", by Chuck and Debbie Robinson. After many years, I ended up moving to New York City(near this place on Long Island), and decided to visit! Thanks so much for watching!
