Not only fantastic for it's time, but the actress doesn't overplay the laughter and nails it. Kinda want to find and watch this now.

This is still effective today not only because of how smooth and natural it is but the actress is really good at conveying that evil cliche old lady trope

that awesоme visual effect was crеated using оne shade of makeup. When filmed thrоugh a filter the same shade as the mаkеup, it's invisiblе to the cаmera. Take thе filter аway and the mаkeup suddеnly becomes visible. Can rеally only be donе with black and whitе films . . .

As someone mentioned below, after the old woman's transformation, her laugh was just right and suited her appearance.

A beautifully inventive effect, shocking even. I believe they achieved this by using a lightning set up which combined with a sophisticated make up application, when rotating the light at a particular point, creating this stunning reveal. Incredible.

This is supposed to be a comedy thriller, but 0:26 is unironically terrifying

A year or two ago I was blown away when I first saw this clip from the film. I realized how it was done from my photography education. Filters used for this effect are also used to enhance freckles in B&W portraits.

They did (pretty much) the same thing in the first "Jekyll and Hyde" movie... The right mixture of makeup and a shift of lighting to create the illusion of an actual physical change in the character. It looks REALLY great for it's time, and I really wish that they'd still experiment with that same kind of process even in today's cinema! We NEED more practical effects these days! 👍

I haven’t seen this movie, but I love how at first glance, these people are fully capable of just jumping this old lady, but she’s just creepy as hell so they dont, and to top it off she just pulls a gun out of nowhere. Shit is hilarious.

Thought it might have been a lighting technique, or that the frames were doctored in the edit room. It looks like the effect was only possible in the close-up. It looks like the lighting necessary for the rest of the shots didn't allow for the continuation of the effect.

Most over do the ( the evil cackle bit they do it too long or too shrill that was perfect.

In the scene following there is no black or dark facial makeup..it's an added effect carefully done on the film itself

The woman's make-up should have looked as she did after the transformation, but she looks normal after the scare.
