Well folks, for the second time in two weeks, due to my extremely busy life at this particular time, I have once again resorted to reediting an old video and posting the new version of it as my weekly post. And, just like last weeks post, this reedited video has for it's subject matter swarms. The particulars of this swarm catch are as follows. There was a huge swarm of bees about 40 feet up a pine tree, and yes, I'm pretty sure they were from one of our hives that were very near the tree. Because they were so high, my bucket pole was not long enough to reach them so I stood in the bucket of the tractor and was lifted nearer the swarm where I could reach it. My attempt to catch the swarm in my bucket was pitiful, and I got only a portion of the swarm, and by the time I had gotten to the ground to dump the bees in my box which had old brood comb and lemon grass oil in it already, most of the ones in the bucket had flown out. Still, I managed to get a hundred or so of the bees into the bee box that was on the ground already, but the queen was not one of them. How do I know that? Because at the same time I got to the ground with my bucket, the swarm took to the air and was moving away from me at a pretty good clip. And as we all know, the swarm moves with the queen, and as the swarm was moving away, she was not in the box. At that point that's when I reached for the crowbar and started hitting it with my hive tool. The method is called "tanging," and though on this video I used a crowbar and a hive tool, one could use any metal on metal to produce the sound that will work. Normally, I use a cow bell that I carry with me on most swarm calls, but because I did not have it, I improvised with what was at hand. I have used this method a dozen times over the years, sometimes successfully and others not, but because I usually don't have my camera with me, I never got to video it. I just happened to have it with me that day, but not my cow bell.
With things slowing down a bit now, I will be posting a brand new video next Friday so get ready for some real time bee wrangling. God's peace to all.
Mr. Ed

It's not just the fear of rain, it's losing her sent in the rain so they need to land. This is what I was told by my grandfather.

Needs more cowbell. Sharp and loud noises is thought to simulate thunder. Bees can and do fly in the rain. However, they don't like to mess with a thunder storm. I used this method a couple of years ago in my own yard. Worked well. I did more random and spread out patterns. Cowbell. I think I will add one to my vehicle when I roll with swarm gear.

@@ojibwemamastevens768 some are from my own apiary but I have tanged maybe two feral swarms, my swarms have all gone back into their own hive the wild feral swarms have gone back to the tree branch they originally swarmed to it is a amazing spectacle too see, you know I’ve never noticed how long it took them to go back maybe five or ten minutes oh and I used my hive tool banging on a old metal bucket, I can honestly say I don’t know the science behind tanging people say it mimics thunder so the bees think it’s going to rain but I am definitely a firm believer in this trick because it’s worked for me. All those in the air remind me of my old 5-string pal that had over 200 hives behind his house. He hauled them all over to pollinate and whatever they do and got the honey hisself. The hum was plumb LOUD and the air was black from all them flying. I was SCARED to get out of the car in summer and wondered about it in winter. Books written a long time ago mention banging on stuff to attract bees. Bang away, Pal and have yourself a Jesus weekend and I thought those were DIESEL bees for awhile there!

If they're inside a tree, like an actual hollow, they probably have a hive established in there and this wouldn't work. This would be for a homeless swarm seeking shelter...

A question that came to mind while watching this video is, do Queen bees have a different body temperature than drones? If that is true, perhaps you can use a thermal camera to spot her heat signature amongst the thousands of others bees" A tool with a finer reading capacity to locate her could be created to do this? I am NOT a bee expert, so just sharing a curiosity. Thank you, as always for your fun and educational videos!

I do not know if there is a different temperature between a drone and a queen, it is an interesting idea if there were. God's peace Jackie. Mr. Ed

I guess you can't fool all of the people all of the time, but you can fool some of the people some of the time. Had the bees not already clustered around your hive - before you twanged your bar, I would have been impressed.

Wow Jeff - swarming already - well that's 1 for you and 0 for Randy. Mike Barry said he was weeks away from swarms if he doesn't split soon. We got warm up here but it's supposed to get cold again soon like tomorrow lol

In these parts up North we use a cannon or tanerite...just joking. My neighbor in upstate NY, when I was stationed there, did the same thing. Worked, but they left when he was at work the next day.

"By the grace of God", Amen brother. Honeybees are just one fascinating aspect to His creation. I wonder if there is a perfect frequency for luring swarms.
