The Three Amigos ride again! On this adventure we head back to a location that Charlie and I had visited just weeks before to remove a hive but they had vacated the premises prior to our arrival and we simply removed the comb, the link is below. This time, a swarm had moved into the same spot and we were there to remove the bees, and then transfer them to the homeowners other house. The bees had quite the attitude when we first arrived, but they quickly calmed down and continue to be well behaved bees. Thanks for taking the time to watch. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Actually Jeff, is it not true, in this case where you have brood in the hive, you could have done a quick release of the queen because “swarms” won’t leave brood?!!!
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 9 месяцев назад
Though it is almost 100% true, they will in fact abscond even if there is brood in the box...and sometimes even if the queen is caged. Still, it helps to secure the bees by keeping the queen locked down for a few days, and it gives them an opportunity to clean up the mess that I helped create by removing them. Thanks for watching. The only worry I'd have is that the bees are a little "hot" for a new beekeeper, but then the bees have clearly chosen Rick and Susan, so the best of luck to them - I bet those suits don't stay that white for long! Chickens around the beehives are great for eating small hive beetle larvae, which need to burrow in the soil to pupate, and chickens love scratching them up as tasty snacks! I would suggest they hang a swarm trap/bait box in the location that swarms have now found three times, once they have closed up the ceiling tight and put new insulation in. It is obviously a location the swarms are drawn to, so is worth making the most of. Hang a shelf or two just-sized for a 5-frame nuc just under the ceiling in spots that swarms have used already, add a nuc in each, and let the wrangling commence!
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 2 года назад
The bees really settled down and almost immediately after transferring them, which I was grateful to see. Also, we have already talked about setting traps next spring as I am very sure we will be catching a swarm or two from this location. Rick and Susan are on the way to having dirty suits real soon. Thanks for watching. God's peace Phil. Mr. Ed

Edit I would say from the large number of nests being built right next to insolation I would think it really don't hurt them.

Hello Jeff. For some time I have watched your videos, in which you have removed colonies of bees from houses and other buildings. I have seen how on many occasions you have used a small torch to provide light, and how you have held this torch in your mouth. I have thought that it might not be very comfortable to hold the torch in this way and also that this method of holding the torch could easily damage the screen which protects your face. In this particular bee removal I was thinking all those things again, and how easily bees could sting your face through the veil, when you hold the torch this way. At 9:20 you collected a bee sting on your lip, and you commented is at 23:40, “I still got nailed!” I have wondered what your thoughts are about using a head mounted flashlight? Rather than having a headlamp under your veil, if a suitable headlamp was mounted on the outside of the veil you could have the benefit of plenty of light, without the discomfort of holding a torch in your mouth, and with a much reduced possibility of being stung through the veil.

Wouldn't it be better to somehow melt the top edge of the comb you removed, since it is nice and flat. and attach it to the top bar of the frame ? That way the bees could continue drawing the comb down like they would naturally. Once the wax cools and with the help of bands, I think it would stay in place when you turn the frame right side up.

You have said in some of your videos that you feed back the honey to the bees when you do a cutout since it is too difficult to frame it up and put in the hive. How exactly do you feed it back to the bees? I just did a cutout from an old Cottonwood tree that was cut down. The honey can't be framed but we are in Oct. in Idaho so the bees don't have much time to stock their pantry. Do you use a top feeder? A mason jar? A frame feeder? Do you thin it out at all? Please be very specific in how you accomplish this. I can't open feed. This is a very large colony and I want them to have the best shot at making it through winter on their own stores if possible. Thanks in advance for your help, Sherry
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 2 года назад
I simply crush and strain the honey comb, filter the honey, and then place the filtered honey in quart bottles and do internal feeding by placing the bottle over the hole in the inner cover. Then I place a empty super on the inner cover and place the lid on top of the super. The video link below shows it all. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed, sorry if this takes up too much of your time. I'm curious if you have to do anything special to winterize your bees or bee hives to handle a Louisiana winter? I'm asking partly because I live in Iowa, where winters are harsh, and partly because of another RU-vid channel, Vino Farm. This beekeeper lives in Massachusetts and about two years ago, he lost 5 of his 6 hives over winter. This inspired him to create an improvement on the traditional Langstroth Hive, what he calls a "Bee Barn." It is a well-insulated hive with much larger frames, among other things. Here's a link to the video where he explains this design: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-z768OIA3bMo.html So I'm wondering if this design would be overkill for Louisiana winters, or for any apiary in a southern climate?

As I sub to Jim's channel, I am very familiar with him, he does a great job with his bees. But to answer your question, our winters here in Southeast Louisiana are so mild that to have 3 weeks of temps below 32 degrees would be unusual. Our bees fly almost all year round and because of that, I do nothing to winterize our bees. Another great reason to live in the south. God's peace Jim. Mr. Ed

Funny, I was just thinking if I held a flashlight in my mouth, through the mesh, I would get stung on the mouth (really mean bees where I live). How does Mr. Ed do it? Then Ralph said you were stung "through the suit"! How the mighty have fallen!😀

Hello Mr Ed and thank you for all the wisdom and positivity you convey. Part of my small beekeeping business here in the mountains of Virginia includes removals. I find I have good success keeping the bees in the bee vacuum alive and healthy when the colony is relatively new to the location. But when they have been there all season or worse, for multiple seasons, the volume of honey and nectar that spills as I vacuum bees and remove comb inevitably makes for a very sticky mess inside my hose, and all over the outside of the bees that end up in the vac. In some cases, bees begin to clog up inside the hose, which I can usually resolve, but the bees in the vacuum get stressed it seems by the light coating of honey and nectar all over them. In those situations I get a heartbreakingly high percentage of die off before I get back to my apiary to house them. What insight can you offer to help me combat the situation I describe when the job is big and goes on for many hours? In what way do you approach big old colonies differently than young small ones? I work by myself, so things drag on longer than if I had a helper or two. But I’m not in the position to hire anybody . Thanks for your input. Randy

The solution is very simple, avoid vacuuming bees on honey. I generally do this by removing the honey comb first thus pushing bees onto the brood comb and not allowing them to contact dripping honey. The bees that are on honey I leave them alone until they have cleaned the honey up, than they are vacuumed. I realize this may not be the exact answer you where hoping for, but with experience, your methods will improve. Best wishes for all your successes. God's peace Randall. Mr. Ed
