All you need to know is that it's great in theory but not in practice yet unless you own an Oled and are in a light controlled room. Otherwise I and many others prefer HDR10 as it has better average picture level(overall brightness; highlights are the same, contrast is slightly worse)

Hey, engineer here. No expert on this, but I took a graduate course in acoustics, so here are some things to keep in mind regarding the ceiling fan question: 1. Regarding the effect of the airflow, the air velocity will add or substract from the speed of sound, depending on which if they are in the same direction or not. Gradients in the speed of sound will cause the sound direction to bend in the direction of lower sound speed. But the speed sound at room temperature is ~750 mph, and the fan airflow speed is waaaay smaller, so any sound speed gradients will be very small, and thus not have a strong effect. 2. Regarding the effect of the fan blades themselves, obviously the blades are stiff and will reflect sound. The larger the angle of the blades (compared to perfectly horizontal) the more angle you will get in the sound waves that bounce off, but fan blade angles are small, so the effect should be minimal. Besides the angle stuff, the motion of the blades induce some doppler effect on the sound, shifting the frequencies a bit higher or lowering depending on if the fan blade is moving toward or way from the sound source and the listener (both matter). Strength of the doppler effect depends on speed of the object bouncing the sound versus the speed of sound. Fan blades move much slower than the speed of sound, and the blades move mostly perpendicular to the sound wave direction (sound is going up, blades move horizontally), so the doppler effect will be weakened. Anyway, hope that is helpful. My company actually makes software that can simulate the air flow and acoustics, but it would be fairly time-consuming to setup and compute.

This is the kind of comment I was hoping to see! Thank you SO much for taking the time to jump in and share your knowledge. This is awesome. What you’ve said lines up with what I had guessed, but something I NEVER want to do on this channel is state a theory as fact, especially when it isn’t especially well supported or is purely observational. Hey! Thanks for the input, it is very interesting. I was wondering, since the question about the fan was "does it has an effect that is noticeable to our ears", why don't just try it by yourself and share your thoughts about it (as you do when reviewing sound systems). The fan WILL have an effect on sound, now what we want to know is how much. If I were you I would try to do some sweeps (or just play one frequency in the midrange) on the surround speaker that is under the fan without the fan to move, and then do them again with the fan moving. Maybe you could ear something, then it is noticeable in your case. If not, it is very probably not noticeable... I don't have a ceiling fan, but if I had the problem maybe that is how I would have done 😊 Thank you so much for your content, it is very interesting and love the format.

Thanks for the info. About the ceiling fan issue... I'm with you, we can't know how one particular setup is going to be affected. But, here's my anecdotal observation: I have a baby grand piano in our antique room, the ceiling is high, but the ceiling fan is basically at normal height. When the fan is going (in the summertime), and I'm playing the piano, the sound coming from the piano, to my ears (I'm sitting at the keyboard) is distorted to the point where it sounds like the piano is out of tune. At first, I thought the piano was out of tune. And, when I pointed it out to the piano tuner he said, "try turning off the fan." And... I was amazed at how much difference the fan made in the sound coming from the piano to my ear level. So... when I play in the summer, I turn the fan off, but then it gets too warm in the room, so... yeah. Your mileage may vary! Thanks again for the info.

The format of this video series is awesome. I have gotten many answers to questions I didn't know to ask. 1. Would also like a video explaining the HDR formats and how they work. More specifically, if I buy a Samsung TV and I watch a Dolby vision stream does it show me the video in HDR10+ or just not show it in in HDR at all? 2. Would love a video showing the all the settings to check and the pitfalls to look for when hooking a gaming PC up to an OLED TV. Both from the TV side and the PC side. Mainly to show how to avoid burn in and also to make sure it is getting it's full performance like 4k, 144hz, HDR, low latency etc. I know that would be a tough topic because of a wide variety of settings between tv manufacturers and PC setups but that is also why some of us could use a guide. Appreciate you, GG

Excellent job as always! Yes, a deep dive into Dolby Vision and its lack of full usage would be awesome! Also, I believe you forgot to mention that with all Dolby Vision it has standard HDR embedded within as a separate layer in case the device can only play standard HDR. Let me know if I'm incorrect in that assessment. Have you ever thought of reviewing computer monitors? I'd love to hear an episode about if QD-OLED will be the most widely used technology going forward. It seems that LCD/LED are going by the wayside and that the only competition is Mini LED for the higher HDR peak brightness, but I see the limitations of QD-OLED being made up for in the future, and I also see an end to standard OLED. Keep up the great work!

With respect to Amazon and physical media, I have noticed that it has gotten harder to get search results for physical discs. And the listings that seem to come up first are the streaming ones. Plus when you navigate to the Blu-ray section, when clicking on "new releases", pre-orders'", and "best sellers" NO RESULTS COME UP. What is with that? Its as if they are that interested in selling discs these days.
@barebarekun161
@barebarekun161 Месяц назад
This has been happening for quite a few years now on Amazon, at least to international buyers like me. All the results for physical media are buried deep within few layers of the search results of said movie title so it discouraged those that weren't persistent or old school enough to find it but it still there. The worst problem is availability and that they're often don't ship many of these Blu-rays worldwide anymore and if can be its frigging expensive, if I buy more than one title it's easily over $100 total and I'm not talking about 4K Blu-ray, just normal Blu-ray.

Regarding chapter 6 (studio camera): Your videos probably look soft to him because you use 24fps and that introduces *A LOT* of motion blur. Upping that to 30fps or 60fps would make your cotnent look "more 4K" as it's sharper and more realistic. The nice benefit would be that it also becomes easier to rate TV motion from your reviews though that's still limited.

I think the best thing you can do to keep people interested in watching videos day-to-day week to week. Is it discuss new technologies/trends. new things that come out week a week because most of us who follow tech,I mean there’s always gonna be some people are interested in buying a new TV, but for each one of those there’s probably 20 people or 50 people who just wanna hear about what’s the future hold and what are the next products and what are the next things so I would always recommend taking some time to highlight new technology or even research or you know what’s down the road what’s in the future about media TVmusic, etc. etc. and don’t just stick to reviews. I also like the Q&A series which will answer questions about what people are interested in so keep doing that.

I own the XM3's I bought 4 years ago now, and weirdly enough I feel like they've held up too well lmao, I really do want the new design in the XM5 and the better battery in the XM4 however the upgrade cycle has been so weird and to this day there hasn't been a headphone I feel is a true upgrade in *every* way. I'd love to switch it up and get something new but having tried the XM5 the comfort was worse, the battery life is the same and I actually found the noise cancelling worse for low frequency noises. The only upgrades would be call quality and faster charging. Overall I'm patiently waiting for the XM6 to at the very least combine the benefits that came about in the XM4/5 into one package making the upgrade worthwhile. Really do hope they come out this year and the new extra bass wasn't the only headphone for the year. Did really love that Sony is attempting to make a less bass-y sound for the WH series!

2:29 Automated closed caption split 350 million as 300 50 million. Sounds like you said "300 and 50 million." Great tip about choosing Movies and TV from the dropdown list by the way. 10:30 Your video looks great to me on my LG C2 TV. I think it comes down to calibration issues, but I don't know what's going on without gathering facts from the Sony A80K user... Automated closed caption thought you (caleb) said Sony A8K but I heard you say A80K. Not your fault on this one. 11:00 I live in a rental house with my two family members (travel nurses) and we live in a 1920 house in Cleveland, OH. The basement has beans in the ceiling and not only that the hardwood floor is visible from the basement that leads up to the living room and my family accidentally spilled a glass of wine on the floor and cause the wine to drip down to the basement. Mind you, it's the U-shaped glass, a narrow cylinder below the glass, and the base at the bottom and those kinds of glasses get knocked down easily compared to regular glasses. I've had to clean up my family's mess in the basement because the ceiling has tiny little holes on them,, letting small amounts of light to shine through through the floor that leads down to the basement. I can imagine my equipment such as my home theater receiver getting caught by the "spilling down to the basement" liquid. That would make me really angry... Not like I would buy that "it's an accident" as an excuse for choosing an old house to live in...

I'd like a Dolby Vision video. I'd also like to know your opinion on whether it's worth giving up Dolby Vision capability on a TV, for example Samsung vs LG (although I've heard LG is ditching DV?) - especially if creators use DV to more of its full potential.

The Amazon search algorithm has been this way since prime video started renting/selling digital purchases. Nothing new. Of course theyd do this. You get so much more profit than having to ship, plus a tiny plus margin.

You could try a 1K sine wave thru all speakers and then individually with fan on and off. A tone sweep might be interesting as well with all speakers on then individually with fan on then off.

I'm most def for a Dolby Vision deep dive. I'm a huge fan of what Dolby has developed and is developing for theater/hometheater solutions (9/10 times I prefer the Dolby Cinema experience to standard and even IMAX films, but ofc some films are meant specifically for IMAX or other special experiences).

I watch your show 90% of the time on my Sony A9G { which is old } However the pictures on your show are Always Flawless so... i have to agree somethings going on on Eric's end, possibly in his U Tube settings, maybe too low? I'm using Mirage omnipolar satellites and a center connected to a Denon. Seems to all sound good. And it fits. (Challenge of having a floor rising projector screen on my one good wall.) In the other room, an LG CX. Please if you can ask LG if hardware based rolling scan BFI is ever coming back? Hard to overstate how fantastic this capability is, which suddenly was discontinued as of 2022 models... As always loved the show. (And subscribed of course.) P.S. And a little sub. 5.1 setup...

A celling fan would affect the sound, but it depends on a lot of other variables, i.e. what type of speakers you are using, your room design, how big the fan is, if you have rug or carpet, etc. Have a 13' by 17' by 8' room and cant tell the difference when the fan is on or off.

A Dolby Vision deep dive video would be great. Especially as I've noticed plenty DV (and even vanilla HDR10) movies whose average brightness and peak brightness are usually in or below the range of SDR. An artistic choice, sure (not every movie needs to be bright as a store tech demo), but hardly what DV is sold as being.

I’d definitely be interested in hearing about deep dive on Dolby vision. It’d be interesting to learn more about how 4K Blu Ray DV is different from steaming DV. I’ve heard there are different profiles, but I’m not really sure what that means.

Re Amazon etc making the purchase of discs less easy. Why they make them hard to find is strange, finding anything on Amazon is far more difficult than it should be. What winds me up is the way prices change during the day, decide to buy one then go back a few hours later and the price will have dropped! Answer is to put it in you cart and keep checking for price changes. Buying physical media is now mail order only for most of us in the UK. Where i live in Chester all the stores have gone or just stopped selling them. The limited selection of Blu-Ray 4K players is another sign that there is not enough demand for spinning discs these days, buy them whilst you can.

Because they want to steer people towards digital purchases through Prime Video or get people to sign up for Amazon Prime. I think Apple is a better route to go if you're interested in a digital library. Most of my Blu-rays are just pirated BD remuxes or copied from the library. I've pretty much gone to Apple. I just think it's easier to deal with and far more convenient. Only Blu-rays I really acquire much anymore are boutique stuff.
@Barbarapape
@Barbarapape Месяц назад
@@stonesfan285 I refuse to buy digital purchases and don't want or need a streaming service. Blu-Rays are now as cheap as DVD's were a few years ago, plenty to choose from on auction sites or local charity shops.

Yeh with Samsung AI in TVs and glowing reviews on the new TVs, I question if we need Dolby Vision since streaming is the norm and most TVs aren’t tuned properly to get the best out of it. But would like your opinion.

As a collector I have a missive collection of blur ray discs in HDR 10, plus and dolby vision so I can speak on this. Dolby Vision is the best format for HDR but the creator has to grade it properly for you to see the diffrence, some movies will look amazing making your jaw drop to the floor while others wont look that impressive.

Another vote for Dolby Vision video. Question, I recently bought a Sony X90L, I have a Sonos Arc and a Roku Ultra. When I open apps like Disney+ on the Roku, the movies will show Dolby Atmos but not Dolby Vision. If I use the built in Apps on the Sony, it shows DolbyVision and plays in Dolby Vision based on the picture setting I can change on the Sony (Dolby Bright, Dolby Dark, etc. On the Roku the picture settings are Vivid, Cinema, etc. I have changed the input settings for HDMI 4 to permit Dolby, so I have no idea if it’s the Roku or I am missing something else. Many thanks and cheers from the Jersey Shore. PS. Love all your work it’s greatly appreciated.

Since you said you’ve already went through your Sony TV’s settings and made sure it’s set to “Enhanced” for Dolby Vision/HDR, the next step is to go into your Roku’s settings. Scroll to “Settings”, click right arrow ➡️, scroll down to “Display type” and set correct setting for your TV which is “4K Dolby Vision HDR TV”. Click “OK” and you’re done. You can also select “Automatic (4K Dolby Vision)” and the Roku will automatically set your TV resolution to 4K and Dolby Vision HDR. Hope this helps.

The Apple TV Userinterface isn’t updated yet sadly. If you got the new appletv with hdr10+ most Apple TV content showing DV plays back in hdr10+. On streaming services which show Dolby vision it falls back on hdr10 which is built in on DV content

I think you need to revisit this preferred set up for Earc. Which is better the receiver vs Tv input set up. I have been pondering this question Because I been running my system through my receiver and then the Earc from the tv to my receiver. I think you stated in a video once how you think you get better signal/switching by running all inputs through the tv. I find the opposite is true. My receiver tend to do a much better job of upscaling low res signals and switching. Can you please clarify for me why it’s better to run everything through the tv. Thanks Caleb love the new format
@Dyselon
@Dyselon Месяц назад
I was focused on the eARC case in my question because our house is gaming the vast majority of the time, and we don't want to deal with the extra potential latency of the receiver.
