I had the opportunity to test RM2, boox tab c, tab x, supernote and kindle scribe. I definitely chose scribe after that. Thr jest screen, fast, better writing experience than RM2, suitable for drawing has super pencil and pen types.

Hi! I've been watching your deep guide reviews for a while and I've to say I really like your clear, concise and honest impression of the devices. You have me so interested in supernote too! Since I am always seeking a device where I can read and annotate extensively, Kindle scribe or even Kobo elipsa 2e seems like a great option for me. Someday I will be able to buy one of them. Unfortunately, I'm from India and none of these devices are shipped or sold here as of yet. Hopefully it will happen soon. Anyway, love your reviews!

The Scribe really shines in many respects, not least of which is the pencil function. It is really great. But it's the little things. At first, I wasn't really bothered by the conversion that goes on when you import a pdf to the Scribe, but then I noticed it was stripping out my nested bookmarks that I had painstakingly added. Not cool.

The "Margins" setting is indeed the crop functionality you are looking for. Sometimes this functionality is a bit buggy. I found that opening another document, or navigating to the home page and back to the document, fixes the margins not updating. Also, it will only automatically crop to the first thing on the page (i.e., your `.pdf` has corner annotations and that may explain why it doesn't work). Maybe also try it on another document? The strange thing is that the "Margins" setting applies across all your documents, which seems a bit silly. Moreover, I noticed that when you add `.pdf` and it gets converted (e.g., via send to Kindle), there is some artificial margin added to the `.pdf` document.

@@MyDeepGuide I couldn't agree more. Sometimes I wonder why the software on e-ink devices lacks so much, especially for a company like Amazon that has resources at its disposal. Honestly, either the e-ink market share is too small, or developing software for e-ink hardware is inherently more challenging, or there may be some other unknown reasons. I think Amazon had, and perhaps still has, the chance to come out on top here, especially since they already have the Kindle store and arguably the best-in-class reading experience. Maybe working around the current Kindle OS is limiting what features they can add, but surely they can afford a dozen engineers to rewrite the OS from the ground up? This hardware deserves better ones and zeros...
@SystemSigma_
@SystemSigma_ Год назад
@@maconstantinwriting an os from scratch is not easy nor quick, even for Amazon.. I bet the apps will improve, sure but don't expect revolutions on the os side
@maconstantin
@maconstantin Год назад
@@SystemSigma_ That's a fair point, and I agree with you that it is neither easy nor quick. However, at the same time, it is likely less complex compared to iPadOS or Android. I also hope to see software improvements, especially in the areas of (1) organizing notebooks, documents, and e-books; (2) switching between documents and notebooks; and (3) adding custom templates (i.e., which, for whatever reason, are now embedded in the firmware).
@SystemSigma_
@SystemSigma_ Год назад
@@maconstantin you are talking about application-level functionality, which should be quite easy to improve. The Kindle os, technically speaking, is a whole another thing. But since they come bundled together as a firmware update, you may use them interchangeably, yes

My face when I notice the battery percentage: I feel like it'd have been easier to fix the hyperlinking issue by just fully, natively supporting PDF as a format. Like, I get it. It's not an open format, and they probably need to pay Adobe to use it, but until they do that, I won't buy this device. It is literally one of two things preventing me from doing so. The Kindle e-ink web browser has been an experimental feature since the very first one.

Unfortunately, I continue to have problems opening PDFs as long as the Scribe has no internet. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Especially with large PDF files it is a problem. (By PDFs I mean files sent via the online platform). Once connected to the Internet, it magically works normally. In all other respects, it's a great device.

For a 10.3 inch e-ink, most people would expect to use it for PDF, and yet it lacks basic features such as cropping, and increasing contrast to make PDF reading usable and comfortable. I wonder if Amazon engineers would be able to overcome the severely limited 1GB RAM of Scribe to deliver a smooth refreshing reading experience for PDFs.

First Boox I had was Max Lumi 1. I was happy with it in every aspect, battery including. I would even forget thing has to he charged. When I saw 20% battery I would think to myself, ok I have to charge it today or tomorrow or in 3 days... It wouldn't matter much. Than I bought Tab Ultra C and was pretty angry and disappointed in battery life, I eould have to charge it loke every 3-7 days. I thought that's awful. And THEN I bought Note Air 3 C, and now don't know ehat to make of it. You have to charge it like smartphone, every or every second day... It's very disappointing. Just as You said, one of the big upsides of eink devices is just gone....

@@ap-dh8md Lumi and Ultra C weren't slow as hell either. It's not that much the speed that kills the battery so fast. It's this new refresh technology. Wish they could make it switchable, so one can decide to go for battery draining and no ghosting, or longer battery and slight ghosting

That handwriting conversion is fantastic! Do you know how long it takes to transcribe an entire page, or if it can transcribe and send multiple pages in one go? Shame about the PDF handling. Once cropping works - and PDF notation is more robust, allows you to handwrite in the notes - this could become an actual competitor to my Boox Note Air 2+. Until then, I'm sticking with Boox (as unintuitive as their software is). Guess I'll wait for more updates!

It be nice if eink was more cheaper and more like paper . Id be nice to have a stack of eink sheets and a digital folder I feel like eink in general is like writing on sand on a beach where sure I can write millions or more text but some times it’s hard or impossible to organize or revise….my issue is that navigation is slow and should be dropped into separate sheets so that you can physically move them and look at them with out waiting for it to load .. also if it’s more paper like it’s a lot easier to hold for long periods of time

I still don't know why someone would choose the Scribe. Other note-takering devices do a much better job with far more functionality. In addition, there are some Kindle books that even Amazon says cannot be displayed on a Kindle but rather the Kindle app must be used, which isn't available on the Scribe I think. My original assessment was that anyone interested should wait until updates make it sufficiently usable, if that ever happens. I'm still waitning ... well, no, I'm not.

It’s first and foremost a book reader. And it’s great at that. If you want really elaborate and interactive books on it then that’s more of a kindle app thing so no knock on that. As for limited functionality, well, it’s not supposed to compete with eink tablets 😂 it’s supposed to do journaling and lite pdf annotation/review. It’s supposed to keep you from using it as a tablet by limiting what you can do within its environment.

Superb review. Here is a question: how do you share a PDF file > 25MB with Kindle Scribe? I usually send PDF files to the Kindle Scribe using Gmail. But over 25MB Gmail converts files to links.
