The sounds of distant thunder resonate across the Amazon rainforest. The insect chorus is shrill and deafening. The tension is palpable. You instinctively get ready for a heavy downpour, grateful that you're sheltered by the jungle canopy.
Then you hear a weirdly out of place sound - the squeaky call of a frog that sounds like a caricature of itself. At times these frogs sound like a puppy barking, or people having a conversation just out of hearing range. They might sound like a funny cackle or chuckle. Not at all what you would expect in a remote and dangerous part of the world like the Javari Valley.
As the hours pass, the thunderstorm gets closer and the low frequency rumbles grow louder. Flashes of lightning light up the jungle and thunder is almost continuous. Wind speed picks up and you can hear vegetation and branches breaking close by.
This doesn't immediately sound like a very relaxing place to be. If you aren't careful it can be pretty dangerous. It's this careful balance between exposure and shelter that makes it more exciting though. If you've set up camp already and cooked your dinner, you are now in your hammock in relative safety and comfort. What an amazing soundscape to fall asleep to.
