Ambient Piano Study/Improvisation #9 (Timing)

It's been a couple of months since my last video, so I wanted to get a new one up. This is an exercise/practice that I've been forgetting to do for a while (and it shows - I'm pretty sloppy), but it has really helped me in improving my timing by playing this to a metronome at 150bpm (I had the metronome playing in my headphones but not in the master output). Need to be careful of this practice and give your fingers a rest (and a shake) if they start tingling and getting fatigued.
This is a similar study/practice to study #3 that I did back in November 25 2023, but this one focuses more on timing, while being musical and open for improvisation.
Tempo: 150bpm
Piano: The Gentleman (Kontakt)

In this exercise I'm generally just playing a varying improvised sequence with the right hand in the A min key, mostly C, D, E, G, A. While doing a simple two note/dyad chords in the left hand A+E primarily, G+E, F+C (you can add occasional D+E and modulate to a Bb+F sometimes for variation).

Very nice. Notice that you have the Expressive E Touché. Have bought one but have not incorporated it into my playing yet. Would be nice to see how you employ it.

Thank you. I didn't use the Touche for a long time, I was almost about to sell it, because I didn't have room on my desk. But it's back there now. I'm not sure myself how I'll employ it!

Can I ask if you are following a guide or instruction somewhere on this kind of thing? I'd love to practice, but doing general scales without playing something musical like this is torture. I know there are hacks to make practice interesting, and it seems like you have this well in hand.

Hi David. No guide at all. I've been developing different practice techniques for myself to target specific areas in my playing that I feel need improving, while also being fun, musical and open to simple improvisation. This one is quite simple, but I should have probably put the overlay keyboard graphic on the video so that you could see the notes. I'll add pinned comment explaining what I'm doing.

hiya, Pat 👋 just having my breakfast and seeing what is in my feed this morning and saw this, so my first wake up input I know this is a practice piece but to me it sounded really nice then I read your comment about being sloppy and I listened again in more detail and was there a couple times where you caught a couple of notes by mistake? difficult to tell really, and if I hadn't read that comment I wouldn't have noticed at all cheers, and thank you for sharing, andy 🙂

Hey Andy! Glad you liked this. It's mostly my timing that's quite sloppy, if you could hear the metronome, you'd hear it but as I mentioned I haven't been practicing this exercise for quite a while, and for timing it does seem to me at least that you need to practice this fairly regularly to a metronome to stay precise. I'll add it to my daily practice again now :)

@@TheLighthouse-111 ah, okay, yeah, without a metronome or beat there's no way we could spot that and I've been practicing my timing since 1979 and I'm still crap!! hence the beat-less drones and noodling haha

@@synkrotron Haha...I've been practicing a couple of decades myself and still crap! Though to be honest, I've very rarely done any kind of practice to a metronome, and that's really why the sloppiness. When I was in my early 20s and in a band, my timing eventually became very good!

@@TheLighthouse-111 yeah, playing in a band does tend to focus the mind a bit... I was amazed I was never sacked though... 🤣
