✵ America's Longest Tunnels
✵ Engineering in the US has made incredibly strides in the past. As late as the mid 1900s, the idea of freeways was still developing and they werent yet built on a widespread scale. And now, there is incredible infrastructure being built around the country, including 24 mile long bridges, covered in an earlier video of mine, but now, over mile long bridges; going under cities, water & mountains. So today I wanted to look at the longest road tunnels in the country, and show the history of how insane these really are.

I think you need to change the name of the video to "America's Longest Highway Tunnels." There are much longer rail tunnels like the Hoosac Tunnel in Northwest Massachusetts, which is more than 5 miles in length. The Moffat Rail Tunnel in Colorado is six miles long, while the Cascade Rail Tunnel in Washington is almost 8 miles long.

The 85-mile-long Delaware Aqueduct, the longest tunnel in the world is located in New York. It transports water to NYC and is a 100 foot wide tunnel built completely underground. An entire profession called sand hogs are named for people who build these tunnels. As a Colombian what surprises me about American tunnels is their age and how they innovated in their time, in Colombia road development began only in the 90s and is advancing fast, we have 7 tunnels longer than the Whittier Tunnel, and an eighth under construction with at least 6 miles long :D Good video man!!

Definitely an interesting video. Tunnels are pretty fascinating in general. One of the most fascinating tunnels in my opinion is the Lehigh Tunnel on I-476 in PA. The interesting thing about this one is that the northbound tube is square and the southbound tube is round. The other tunnels I find fascinating are the Blue Mountain and Kittatinny Mountain Tunnels on the PA Turnpike. They’re directly one after another and it’s an amazing construction marvel

The Alaska Way Tunnel was a sorely needed replacement for the Alaskan Way Viaduct. The viaduct was controversial because of an earthquake that hit the Seattle area in 2001. If the earthquake lasted literally 10-15 more seconds, it would have brought down the viaduct. Also, the viaduct had the same design as the Cypress Viaduct in Oakland that collapsed in the Loma Prieta earthquake in 1989, so there's that.

On the same trip, we drove over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, so we went through that tunnel as well. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so I have been through the Alaskan Way viaduct replacement tunnel (and over the Alaskan Way Viaduct itself!). Finally, work took me to Boston this past spring, where I drove through both of the Big Dig tunnels 😅 Having lived out west my entire life, I'm disappointed to report that the one I haven't been through yet is the Eisenhower tunnel. The longest transportation tunnels in the U.S. are still RAILROAD tunnels, and they U.S. dwarf any highway tunnel, despite both being single track. New Cascade tunnel in Washington and the Flathead tunnel in Montana are both over 7 miles long, and Moffat tunnel in Colorado is over 6 miles long. All three are used by Amtrak, the Empire Builder (New Cascade and Flathead) and the California Zephyr (Moffat). Canada has the longest railroad tunnel in North America, the Rogers Pass tunnel, over 9 miles long. There are also some long bored subway tunnels, like the L.A. Metro Red Line subway between Hollywood and Universal City, and the Portland MAX tunnel that connects downtown Portland with its western suburbs.

They are: HRBT Baltimore Harbor Tunnel Lincoln Tunnel Holland Tunnel Eisenhower/Jonson tunnels One cool fact I think you forgot to mention, even if it is only tangentially related, is that the Ft McHenry Tunnel just to the north of the Harbor tunnel being 6 feet lower. Also, the HRBT is getting 2 new bored tubes! About time, as a Hampton, VA resident in my past, it was not uncommon for it to take over 30 minutes to cross the HRBT, and over 2 hours to go from the J-664 interchange to the I--564 interchange. The MMBT wasn’t much better most times, and most of the time we didn’t use it as the trip was made much longer.

So Interstate 710 ends randomly at Valley Blvd in NE LA. It was planned to continue north and connect with Interstate 210 in Pasadena. But Pasadena and S. Pasadena had a freeway revolt and it was never built thru there. There's been discussions of connecting the two with a tunnel. But it would be super expensive and there's seismic worries to keep in mind as well. The proposed tunnel would be 5 miles long.

It will also be the deepest undersea tunnel in the world at 392 meters below sealevel. They are close enough in age that they share utilities. The population (which was close to zero before the military pulled out) never lived in the "old" building. It was strictly a military building. Once the military left the area, the property was turned over to the new city of Whittier, and things went forward from there. As the population grew they only really could live in the remaining habitable building. It too is an interesting story.
