Oh.My.God. I am a therapist and having that girl get close to a man with trauma in her past could have easily induced a PTSD episode. Perhaps even a full blown disorder stemming from this incident. Absolutely dangerous and ignorant.
Not to mention Mr. Jay’s doing tons of manipulation tactics and mixing truth with grooming type behaviors - “you’re so brave for this, but it’d be good to talk to someone” with “you can’t let this ruin your life”. Like, he’s DISTURBINGLY good at mixing validation and manipulation
@@JBGuarino43 Not a therapist here but I imagine that it's different in the real world because normally you know beforehand what the job includes and you can just walk away from a job or not even audition for these jobs.
@@sonorasgirl I went in for a consultation with a surgeon about a c-section because my midwife was worried that a natural birth might be too traumatic due to my own experiences with SA. The surgeon used the exact same sort of tactic as Mr Jay to try and get me to go through with a natural birth. My mother pretty much supported the surgeons behaviour and actually backed her up too. Both saying "it's decided you're having a natural birth". At that I went into a full on panic attack. Tbh I'm so grateful that other medical staff stepped in to replace the surgeon and keep my mum away while I spoke to someone new about my options. Suffice it to say I hadn't made up my mind until they both tried forcing a decision on me. I went for a planned c-section in the end and it was the best decision I ever made. So glad my midwife made the recommendation.

as someone who had been sexually assaulted, this is utterly disgusting. Imagine telling someone you arent comfortable at doing something because of a trauma yet that someone pushes you to do so. infuriating.
In the real modeling world, IF for some reason the model was unaware of there being this type of interaction with the male model BEFORE arriving, this is the point where they would call their agent to remove them from the situation. Poor girl.
Same here- to me that is abuse in itself. For me saying no wasn’t enough to stop my abuser and after saying no once in any similar situation my body shuts down because I can’t handle the fight. I feel so so sad and enraged for this poor girl
The fact they aired her backstory even when she blatantly stated not even her family knows is sick, this challenge triggered her so much that she felt she HAD to tell her story to "justify" (in her mind) why she was uncomfortable with the situation to mr Jay. And they freaking aired HER story to the WORLD, when she clearly wasn't ready, she was forced to be ready and it's sick!!!!!
@@mielissa100ify even though she knew a camera could be involved, she was forced into the position of telling about her traumatic experience. She didn't go onto a MODELING show expecting she would have to expose her trama (that has no connection to modeling so why would she expect this situation) to the freaking world. Yes, she did say it on camera, however she was put in a situation basically equivalent to interrogating someone to spill their deepest darkest fear/trama which now triggers them to relive said events. Which she CLEARLY has not had any help to heal from, which can be seriously detrimental to her future healing.

Forcing Anne to skate when she clearly doesn’t know how is like giving a random person a guitar and then getting mad that they can’t play a tune bc it’s their first time holding a guitar
not to even mention that skating is much harder for people who are tall because their center of gravity is further from the ground. my friend is like 6’3” and he broke his ankle in multiple places after a fall. that wasn’t even his first time skating, so for someone that tall being that it was her first time skating she did a great job but they should have done more to protect her because she could have gotten a serious career altering injury.

I think it would have been really cute to end their commercials on a group shot with the other girls having fun instead of having a random guy glommed onto them.
As a Model (and Actress) myself, who shot many commercials in the past, this is very frustrating to watch. NO MODEL is booked for a job, without having the proper skills. In this case for example, the Model would need to have a roller skating skill. When a special skill like that is required, my agents asks me beforehand, if I am able to skate, ride bike, etc.. whatever the skill is that is needed. I am asked BEFOREHAND. This show is so unrealistic (and abusive obviously).
Yeah and it's so weird how Jay, Tyrah and Nigel(who works in the damn industry) dont care about this when trying to find americas next top model?? They are manipulating people into being this perfect example of a human who has every skill you would ever need to do anything. Thats just impossible because nobody is that.
Would a model be asked to kiss or get into close contact with someone they don't know. Are they given the chance to at least meet them before shooting. It just seems too weird to me how they show that on the show. These poor girls.
@@dorothypersons79 There are shoots, where you are shooting together with a male model or actor and you have to get close yes. But again, that would be in the job description beforehand. So when you are applying to do the job, you are aware of it. With that being said, it DID happen to me one time that I was not informed beforehand, that I would be shooting with a male model and play a couple with him. It did throw me off at that time, thankfully the male model was very friendly and married anyway, so he was cautious as well.
@@dorothypersons79 From my experience usually even hugging or being close to another person is mentioned in a casting call, let alone kissing or further intimacy. I had one gig as an extra though where I had to dance with a guy pretty close, but we were still able to keep a respectable distance between us and didn't touch each other, just hovered hands close. Thanks to the camera angle it really looked like we were bumping and grinding though!
While she “could” do that, I don’t think it’s as easy as you make it out to be. There’s a major power imbalance here. She’s on national television, under high-stakes contracts, and far from home. The show pays for her lodging and transportation. If she just chose to leave, she might not have a clear way home because she probably didn’t have to plan for that. Not only that, something she really wants to do, model, is on the line. It seems obvious that she could have left but that doesn’t make it practical.
I don’t understand why they couldn’t modify the shoot for her. Bring in a female model and do the same thing (or change it so it’s more like friendship instead of romantic). The entire shoot was gross 😒
this could be part of the processing time... She could have left, but she but decided to stay and deal with it. You build character, you learn, you mature, you get over it and you don't let it harm you in whatever you do. The therapy doesn't build a crystal world for you...and sometimes you have to do it alone.
@@llandriel Dealing with the trauma of sexual assault is not about letting yourself mature or get over it. Would you say the same kind of thing to a war vet who is dealing with PTSD? How about someone who was abused by a parent? How about someone that is grieving their loved one's passing? Take the time to educate yourself on trauma before you do some real harm.

It was physically painful to watch. So many trauma survivors have had to deal with people doing this to them when they try to open up, it’s so hard to watch knowing she was opening up for the first time too

Hearing him use the words “you HAVE to deal with this” aka “YOU HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO BE IN THIS TRAUMA-INDUCING SITUATION” literally made my stomach turn.
Not so fun fact, I watched this episode (and the show itself) when I was a kid, and I had gone through a similar situation to the red-head girl. I remember hearing what Nigel said, and the girl eventually 'agreeing' with him, and it only enforced the thoughts I had in my brain at the time, which was that I HAD to date and kiss guys, even though I really really didn't want to. This show wasn't just horrible for the poor women who went through it, it also spread terrible messages to all of the people, especially little girls, who watched it and believed the toxic messages.

I literally thought for so long that I was like obligated to be intimate with people even through I didn't want to, because me having trauma from something wasn't a good enough reason to say no. Thank god I went to therapy in college. It's so damaging, I still can't believe this was aired on TV. We definitely weren't the only ones damaged by this. I hope you are doing better now and have been able to work through your experiences in a healthy and helpful way
A lot of people also misconstrue the idea of exposure therapy (so exposing yourself to a trigger to desensitize yourself) and think just heading straight into a triggering situation is going to make it all better. You can do that when you feel you are ready and have someone reliable by your side. And most importantly, it's in a controlled environment where you can stop and exit the situation at any given moment. If these factors are not present chances are the trauma gets worse. I hate that Jay presents himself as the shoulder to cry on when the power imbalance (due to him being a panel judge and her being a contestant) is so massive. He is in no way, shape or form qualified to make someone go through this.
They should've just removed the kiss part. It literally does not add any value or benefit to the overall commercial aside from making the girls uncomfortable, which is exactly what the producers wanted. They're so sadistic.
What makes me extra upset about this is that Mr Jay totally blows past her boundaries by having the male models so close to her the entire time. Like she was already revoking consent, he needed to stop pressuring her then. And then right after she opens up about her trauma he lets those models be super close to her and kiss her on her neck. It's bad enough he pushed her to continue, but then to not even accommodate her by sectioning off the men and letting her have space. Ugh disgusting. I wouldn't be surprised if the experience at the shoot made her trauma worse.

@@carissashepard7072 those statement echo the SA she suffered when she was young. Not only is this shoot triggering, it's abuse itself by forcing someone to enter into a situation they didn't want to be in.
Kayla was manipulated and coerced at age 11, into a devastating situation she had no control over. Kayla tells this to Mr. Jay, and he manipulated and coerced her into repeating it. She says no, I don't want to do this, but the implicit threat is "If you don't let this man be intimate with you, you're gonna lose this whole opportunity." Sound familiar? Saying no and there's an implicit (or direct) threat if you don't? He used her vulnerability to repeat the same framework of behavior that she went through as a child. This is DISGUSTING. He didn't just retraumatize her - he flat-out gave her new trauma. And while it's important to point out what Tyra, Nigel, and Mr. Jay all did, there's a whole team of producers that need to go to hell for how they ran this show.
And the worst thing is that this isn't even the first time they were callous about SA. It happened to Adrienne in Cycle 1 during the Go See challenge in Paris and they just filmed it. She is a survivor of severe SA during her childhood in combination with a kidnapping and yet they let this happen. And then, in the same season, they had the models spent the evening with creepy men to make connections. It felt 100% like escort training, not modeling, and like an attempt to normalise men taking advantage of women for job contracts.
@@Itri_Vega i believe in that same season(my mistake it’s actually season 2) they made the girls spend time with male models knowing that a girl had a bf and was having some trouble with him already. In the end she ended cheating on him with the male model and they filmed the situation, i think she was the strongest model in the group too so i feel like they wanted to sabo. her.

I don't think Liz's laughter during the commercial filming was lighthearted. Seemed like that kind of nervous panicky laughter. During judging she went from the same laughing to crying real quick.
It’s definitely a nervous laugh, I have a nervous laugh and it stems from past trauma that I didn’t know how to cope with so it’s definitely a coping mechanism, they shouldn’t even fault her for it 😒🤦♂️
I think laughing when you make mistakes is better than crying every time like Erin did in cycle 13, and they had to keep retouching her makeup. I don't think it meant that Liz wasn't taking it seriously. Those a*holes. Ha
Nigel's "You can do this!" when Anna was struggling with the rollerscates made me burst out laughing, like WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?? NO SHE CAN'T?! Rollerscating is a skill, it requires muscle memory, you can't just will yourself into doing it well.
@@luna-p ironically in a later cycle they did expose a girl to her trauma of drowning by dumping a whole bunch of water on the models during a shoot. There was also the graveyard shoot.
This reminded me of Keenyah from Cycle 4 who was being sexually harassed by the African male model, Bertini; yet she was ridiculed by Mr. Jay the judges for speaking up, making it seemed like it was her fault and she was being a diva which really disgust me. And this with them forcing Kayla to relive her trauma to kiss a guy after confiding with Mr. Jay about her trauma really disgust me even more.
The fact that she said "They scare me" is so upsetting to me. She is clearly traumatised. As someone who went through SA as an adult i can not even begin to imagine what it would be like as a child. So I comletely get where she is coming from. That would scare me too. That guy kissing her neck when she clearly didnt say yes and didnt want to is yet another instance where people dont take SA seriously. That could have been seriously triggering for her and sent her into a full on flash back. Even standing that close to him and feeling like she didnt have a choice could have done it. Im so pissed of with this. I have no other words except im so sorry for her and i seriously hope she doesnt have to go through anything like this again.
I was SA as a child and I unfortunately was pushed into a sexual relationship with an ex partner for years. And I would revert back to that age and say "I'm scared" or "I wanna go home" even if I was home...it's super embarrassing to say but her saying that..... I felt it. I know that phrase well.
My heart goes out to you for experiencing SA, I can't even imagine. I will say, however, I don't blame the male model because I'm sure he didn't know her background, I think he was trying to help her out.
So in front of the whole world she discloses being SA'd as a child, AND THEY FORCE HER TO KISS A MAN FOR A COMMERCIAL. I'm mad as hell rn, as a fellow survivor and as a human being. And the way Jay is smiling and talking about her flashbacks as though they're an every-day nuisance, like... I'm barely containing my rage.
What really gets me is that, depending on her age/state it occured, she may still be within the statute of limitations in regards to prosecuting the a.hole. But yes, let's victimize her further and torpedo her credibility in court rather than CALL THE POLICE OR A THERAPIST. My god, what strange hell do we live in?
Ann’s height and thinness makes it physically harder for her to skate than most people. The judges act like it’s all in her head. These judges would probably tell a person with a disability that it’s all in their mind and that if they just push through they can do it

"Check your emotions at the door" does not apply to trauma like this. It was DISGUSTING for them to make her do that part of the shoot under the veil of "we care and you need to work through this." Except "work through it" literally means to face direct triggers in order to not get kicked. I'm astounded that they wanted a single take commercial in the first place. You know a commercial like that would have some cuts to create a faster pace
Exactly. Most people who haven't been to therapy don't even know what specifically triggers them. Smells, being touched at all or a certain way, the way certain men walk, talk or make eye contact, sounds like the pitch of someone's voice. So how is she supposed to leave her feelings at the door when they are conjured up by something that she can't even give a name to?? Bizarre.
I’d like to propose a better concept for this dumb commercial: First, lose the roller skates, just have them in sneakers. Then instead of ending with a kiss, have all the other models meet up with the person narrating at the end, and all cheers with the water. Tada, a commercial that won’t trigger anyone or make people injure themselves.
As someone who rollerskates everyday, it was irresponsible to put the girls on skates without properly teaching them to skate and safely fall. One of the girls could've been seriously injured.
@@ultimatefirecracker1486 my ex-husband fell off a skateboard a few years ago and ended up with a pretty severe concussion. I've seen some gnarly rollerskating injuries as well. I hope your friend had a fast recovery.
It's interesting how they consistently equated not being able to skate with fear. I mean, no, they just can't skate, so they're falling, getting hurt and embarrassed. So let them do a different physical activity. My gosh. This is like requiring someone to ski for a commercial. No. In the real world, models/actors know that prior to the audition, and they bring the skill with them. And there are just no words for the SA situation. She overcame her fear, but that's one she shouldn't have had to overcome like that.
100%. The real modeling world would only request, hire, and use models who have the necessary skills to do the shoot. An agency wouldn't send a model to do a job she can't do. They'd never bring in a model to walk on stilts or do aerial acrobatics/line work if they had no experience doing it. It's dangerous and a total liability, if nothing else. But as we all know, this show thrived on drama and fear, so they just wouldn't (and frankly, for the sake of the show, couldn't) allow any model to say "No, I'm not/I can't do this."
She was forced to over come her fear and for the wrong reasons! She do NOT owe them ANYTHING! If she do not want to do something it is HER life and HER body SHE HAVE THE LAST WORD IN IT

Aside from the psychological torture of retraumatizing someone, the roller skating is so stupid and dangerous. The fact that these women aren’t wearing helmets and don’t have experience skating, one of the girls could’ve easily hit their head and gotten a lethal brain bleed. People underestimate how hard you can fall on those things…
Yes, exactly. I am an ice skater and one of the most dangerous things that can happen is falling backwards because you can easily crack your head open or cause serious injury to your head. I fell backwards like that when I was first learning and hit my head, but thankfully I was wearing a helmet. But it is so easy to do when first learning how to balance on blades/little wheels. And these girls were skating on concrete with no experience at all! They got very lucky she fell the way she did and didn’t hit her head on something.
Agreed! There was a really tragic story-in Spokane, I think-just within past few years of a woman that was supposedly a good skater falling and dying from her injuries while ice skating. It's really sad how people just take it for granted that "only other people fall" so they skip their safety gear....

I have a feeling that if a model had come to Naomi or one of the judges in About Face (kind of like ANTM but better and actually about modeling), they would've respected the model without question and not make them this.

And both Tyra and Naomi talked a good game about not taking certain castings they didn't wanna do. They didn't do everything that was offered to them.
That conversation between Kayla and Mr. Jay should never made it to TV. They could have easily changed the shoot for her instead of ignoring her trauma and calling it "bad memories". I can't believe they put her through that for a "commercial". 16:55 And the "commercial" isn't even named after the product! It's "kissing commercial". This is incredibly upsetting as someone who's also gone through SA but had years of therapy to address, process, and manage the symptoms. From how it sounds, she hasn't been able to do that and she can't even reach out to her support network after this "commercial" because of how this show works! Disgusting.
Knowing that the models usually had a "no talking unless the cameras were rolling" policy means that she also had no way of venting with other competitors. I can't even begin to process all the repressed emotions. I hope she at least got to have a long shower after this.
They should have changed the shoot for ANY of the models that didn't want to kiss a stranger. Your consent (and lack thereof) is equally valid, whether it's been disrespected before or not. The modelling industry (among many other hollywood/fame/popularity industries) really LOVE forcing women to be intimate with men, and it's a problem. They play it off as "well it's just part of the job!" No sir, if she doesn't consent, it's just assauIt.

its seriously sick how the industry ramps up and plays off peoples trauma. people shouldn't be forced to do things they dont wanna do. i hate how they hold winning/prizes over peoples heads and act like theyre helping people by traumatizing em even further. i hate how normalized their vindictive practices are
its definitly not just antm. its hyped up for views and nasty ofc but theres so many creeps in hollywood nd the modeling industry that get enabled bc of the money and power they have over peoples careers it's definitely a bigger problem than this and the fact that this behavior has been normalized to such a degree that people would happily make profit off of psychological and physical manipulation for tv says a lot i feel.
The pressure they were putting on her was more about the show than the modeling industry. As a model agent, I get in the notes of a job option if there is a concept that involves models portraying any type of relationship and if the model isn't comfortable with it, there is no pressure for them to agree.

I’m not surprised they put Kayla through this and had so many male models on this season. The producers have done funeral photo shoots with contestants who have lost someone, they do shoots on high places specifically to scare the models who are scared of heights. It can’t be just a “coincidence “. I hope Kayla was able to heal from this
The whole situation with Kayla broke my heart. No one should have to go through that. She likely has PTSD from her experience and ANTM really messed up. Also I love roller skating. It’s a huge part of my life. The concept would have been so cool but skating is not easy if you aren’t used to it. The girls should have had protection (I still wear my pads all the time, no shame) and knew what they were getting into. Serious injuries can happen on skates. ANTM dropped the ball on so many levels….sad.
I love how Nigel was big mad over the one girl who couldn't remember her lines and would laugh about it. But had no problem wasting time with Ann who clearly couldn't skate.
The commercial concept is pretty dumb. Like the kiss didn’t add anything to the commercial and also they could’ve replaced the guy with a girl and that could change the concept to girlfriends or best friends hanging out together.
Unfortunately at the time television was still uncomfortable showing LGBTQIA+ Couples so they’d not gone that route. That said this was so wrong to Kayla.
If they insisted on having the guy instead of having her hug him at the end with the kiss it could be the guy approaching her, with the girl stopping him and taking a sip of the water instead. Like she don't need a guy if she has her water.
The fact she confided in Mr Jay and not only they had cameras on her during her private talk, they STILL made her do this has me livid 😤 to just disregard something so serious for the sake of a tv show is absolutely disgusting. ANTM is infuriatingly wrong for this and many many many other episodes.

Why didn’t they offer her the option of kissing a girl? If they really wanted to see her act out this concept, ask the other models if they’d volunteer to be the other model in the shoot? That seems like a reasonable modification to still allow her to complete their concept and show her performance.
Because think of when this was originally filmed and aired. Even though attitudes were slowly changing, that kind of thing would never fly on regular, national tv. You think Karens are bad now? Add Karens, Darrens/Kens, old people, religious conservatives, "think of the children" PTA moms, etc. all together and they all would complain and get the show removed. Things aren't the same in 2010 as they are now.
@@sluttymctits4496 Yes and no. There was a visual increase of lesbian and gay relationships already getting positive press. To name a few shows: Queer as Folk, The L Word, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Will and Grace, All My Children (Bianca and Lena, specifically) all aired in the 2000s, at the same time this was airing. The Karens existed but those shows were on a variety of networks and time slots. So it wasn't quite as sheltered media as say the 80s. (Even then Dynasty was breaking those barriers at the time.) And that doesn't count all the misogynistic queerbaiting. Not a great trope but one the ANTM production could have leaned in to to get by sponsors and viewers. Not to mention the show had already featured Ebony in Cycle 1. So there were ways to circumvent this trauma. They purposely chose not to.

They couldn't have claimed that was going too far. It was an easy solution. Plus, they did it in another photo shoot. They were really just exploiting these girls' humanity for entertainment.
The kiss honestly did not add a single thing to the commercial. Why would the girls not, oh idk, TAKE A DRINK OF THE WATER TO END THE COMMERCIAL ABOUT WATER 😂 The skates also did not add a single thing. You can’t even see them in the commercial 🤦🏻♀️🙄

LGBTQ+ representation has been getting positive press since the Hayes Code broke in one form or another on North American TV - that doesn't mean 'society' or even the shows themselves are going to be decent about it. That goes double for TV geared toward younger audiences which, lbr, ANTM was definitely geared toward a young to teenage girl demographic. They even put out dolls to compete with Barbie. North American LGBTQ+ 'positive press' specifically that's for kids is *very* recent. Things have changed for the better recently around that, pointing that out as a fault of the era isn't inaccurate.
@@bleu8678 same! I'm ashamed I supported this show as a teen. I even wanted to be in the petite season. Even though none of the models (besides Sundai) was actually petite. 5'5 and below is petite. Sundai was 5'4 and the rest were 5'6 or 5'7. Tyra has no idea what petite is.

The saddest part is Tyra and the crew could have changed the industry for the best but no Tyra and the crew had to take out their own experiences in the industry on these girls.
As a product of sexual assault I have a lot of issues with this. I'm 47, and only just started therapy. I've finally told my family. This is a very difficult situation, and I feel for this girl. This took a huge amount of courage. They should have removed her from this situation, and got her into therapy right away. They could have invited her back for another season.
the fact that they kept that scene in and aired it even after she said her own MOTHER didn't know and that mr. jay was essentially the first person she had ever told... that's sick and she definitely didn't deserve to have such a personal experience aired to millions of people like that. this was her first time saying it out loud to ANYONE, and they wanted to get over it and move on within that same hour just for a 30 second commercial??...
All of the other comments have called out more important issues with this episode, but just so you know… 0:37 “H to T” is Trya’s quick way of saying “head to toe”-as in the contestants should always model “head to toe”. It’s not a real drink. It’s a fake one based on Tyra’s brand.
Jess from what I remember from the season I am pretty sure that concept was based off a fake product. The H2T water is a play off Tyra's dumbass phrase "model ht2...head 2 toe". While the whole situation is disgusting overall what really makes me upset is that this shoot isnt even for an actual client. It's just some bs for Tyra's ego and drama for television. The fact that this girl was traumatized on national television and forced to talk about her sexual assault in front of a camera when her own family didn't even know is BEYOND atrocious for ANTM. I can guarantee that had she not have kissed him, she would have had to talk about her trauma in front of all the judges, all the girls, and more cameras at panel. Then instead of being an empathetic human being and realizing that asking her to participate in that kiss was inappropriate, Tyra would've gone on to give one of her modeling life lessons, like "Well this one time I was doing this huge photo shoot on the reefs in Australia and a fish bit me. It was horrible and it made me hate fish. But in the modeling world you have you do what the client wants. I went on to model in the Versace diving collection in Paris Fashion week that next month where I wore a snorkel made into heels and a diving suit while walking a runway made of live tuna. I modeled through my trauma of fish because THAT is what it takes to be a TOP MODEL!"

Also, if I'm not mistaking, Esther was an Jewish orthodox competitor (Haven't seen this season for a while, so I'm not sure) and expressed over the filming of the show that she's uncomfortable around guys. It's like you said many times reviewing this show: If a contestant tells of an insecurity or phobia, you bet they will have to confront it at a shooting. When it's fear of heights or animals, I think it's sort of fair game (I mean, it is nasty, but I guess it's part of the format). But dealing with personal trauma (while having to roller skate backwards) is so messed up. Kayla, Ann and Esther didn't seem "uncomfortable", they seem traumatized and just wishing it will be over.
I feel like the assault was another matter which producers decided was a good storyline as something about it doesn't seem authentic - not the truthfulness of her memory of her assault, clearly that is something that happened to her, but it feels like it doesn't make sense that they would actually force someone to do this knowing the legal ramifications. She's clearly smart enough to know it's wrong to force her and I don't think that many people would be able to deny what happened if she got kicked off because of it - its all recorded. It just seems to me that she must have disclosed during psych eval before entering the show and it was used in order to create drama. I feel she wouldn't be genuinely forced to perform if she would be full on getting PTSD triggers - the feeling of hopelessness and terror is so vidid I really am disappointed with this entire episode as a result of it. Please tell women's stories on their own terms not when it causes dramatic storylines
It's possible she was told and shown the clip in order to record the interview shots on 5:09 however whether she was asked or even had the option to deny it being aired would be a different story. Even tho this is highly personal I imagine they signed the right to be filmed on set at all hours and gave ownership for the producers to use at their own digression. As for DS' comment. I trust her when she said she hadn't told anyone this secret yet (including the production/recruiting team). Tho do agree AMTM is known to lash on to the model's weakness/faults in order to exploit them.
@@mica4977 hey Mica I think maybe she it didn't click for her that she did it during her psych assessment. But either way even if she didn't disclose it to them in any way I don't mean any negative or think anything negative about her I just feel the situation is very fishy. I just wanted to say this so everyone is aware that I am not in any way being critical of the model so please don't misinterpret what I am saying. I agree though regarding contractual obligations and fishiness though. I really think that storylines needing to be presented in a way that represents actual events correctly and importantly don't miss out any critical moments that may distort actual events as reality TV can be very messed up.

I hadn't thought about them testing their mental health prior to recruiting them tho thinking about it & the awful mental and physical things the contestants get put through it would make sense to ensure they're not mentally unstable prior to starting. To avoid liabilities & hopefully for the sake of the person's safety.
Season 7 episode 1. Tyra straight up shames and insults a girl for being an exotic dancer. The model calls herself an “entertainer” and Tyra says “you mean you’re a stripper” and then gets offended when the model tries to compare dancing to modeling and Tyra insists she accept they’re not the same. It was so unbelievably rude of Tyra.
This show seems to like exploiting and humiliating models just for fun (and to fill their own pockets of course). Consistently pushing people’s boundaries and consent, doing challenges and shoots that endangered the models for photos the models can’t even use in real life and then teaching the models it’s normal for them to be treated that way! It’s so sad.

I think this is why they kept having men at the photoshoots. Because they knew Kayla is uncomfortable with men, so what brings good ratings. Having a model who clearly is uncomfortable with men, do photoshoots with men. Disgusting and I wish Kayla sued the show for putting her through the trauma.
The rest of the horribleness aside, notice that the "commercials" barely even show their feet? Anne was almost wiping out while delivering a line that was... shown in close up, not even rolling forward.
why is jay acting like he's employing some amazing exposure therapy techniques? Like he said himself she needs a therapist, he seems to think he's the next best thing, when it was more harmful to her. So awful
I remember watching this around when it originally came out and, despite being a total ANTM stan, I felt WRONG about this. I felt WRONG about the WHOLE reason they brought Kayla on the whole time and I could never shake it... Good to know my instinct was on point! Even at such a young age where I was so gullible and easily influenced... So fucked. All of the judges involved in this show should come out with an apology honestly.
During one of Mr Jay's behind the scenes/ fan questions episodes of this cycle (the videos I think can still be found on RU-vid), he's asked about this specifically, and he honestly came off as "We talked about it, and she just did it, we didn't pressure her, she decided on her own that she wanted to do it", and it was felt so dismissive and like he hadn't done anything wrong, it happened and that was that. How can you, years later, and people telling you online that what you did was so disgusting and horrible? You could've done something different for her (you've done it before when having a model pose with a plastic doll instead of an actual child for example), you could've easily done the same thing here. Just have her rollerskating around a small area and that be that. But no, you probably want to 'help her get through her trauma'.
Jay’s comment about the model pushing aside her trauma and Jessica asking if that’s something that can be pushed aside is spot on. It’s definitely not just stuff that can be “pushed aside” long-term, And doing that in the short-term is unhealthy anyway - it’s dissociation and chronic dissociation in response to trauma triggers a a SYMPTOM of PTSD!
I remember this episode from when it first ran. I felt so bad for Kayla. Whenever I see her in any episode from the two seasons that she was in, this is immediately the first thing that comes to mind. They should have (not just could have) changed it up for her. I feel like Liz was laughing because she was nervous and that was her way of reacting to the stress and not that she was making fun of it. How many takes did they get? It's a lot of things to throw at a person and expect a great performance.
This episode made me cringe so hard! All for some non-existent water. 🙄 And for Nigel at the beginning to play with the girls like that AND Jay, is so irresponsible. This show is irresponsible. And then for Jay to be smiling like that while Kayla is filming. 🙄
I’m in my 40’s and just getting back into roller skating after decades since my last time skating and it’s not like riding a bike! You don’t strap on skates and magically skate like you did when you were a kid. It takes practice to learn how to move, how to fall, how to balance, how to overcome fear. It’s ludicrous to expect someone to recite lines, hold a product, being groped by a stranger while wearing next to nothing, with wheels strapped to their feet when they haven’t skated in years, some have maybe never skated before, basically feeling like Bambi trying to walk over a frozen lake, all while being filmed and gawked at by onlookers. I can’t imagine the pressure of adding anything extra to my thought process while skating on top of “don’t fall and break a hip”. I’d like to see Mr. Jay and Nigel try to do their jobs while roller skating!
When I was in my 20's I skated every weekend, then I only skated occasionally, eventually didn't for years. Went skating with my church a few years ago and at first I was super wobbly, had to get used to it again and even then it wasn't like it was 30+ years ago lol
What’s sad is I used to model and now I can reflect and see how gross the industry is. They bully young girls who are still finding themselves. I myself experienced bullying from grown adults just so they could feel powerful and get their way. I wish young girls knew they can say no and deny a job if they wanted to!
I feel for Kayla. This is wrong on so many levels. Edit: S.A. are not painful memories that you push aside. Is something horrific that you have to heal from for the remainder of your life.
To me this is similar to asking a model two do a nude photo shoot, having them say that they don’t want to do it and they are uncomfortable, and then telling them that they have to do a nude photo shoot in order to continue… So insane they are not canceled and sued for trillions 😡 (edit: they should not have included anything past she’s uncomfortable and she had a talk with Jay)
Liz was noted for making “too many excuses” and got eliminated in the next photoshoot for complaining, which was in pairs of three with another guy in Venice. It would interesting to look back to see if Liz was really complaining and/or just editing.
Couldn't the models have had a fun time walking down to the beach instead of roller skating? Just goes to show that the point of this commercial is embarrassment not modeling or learning to act

When this show was on, there were really unhealthy ideas around boundaries (or lack therof). And because of that, a lot of us had our boundaries totally violated because we felt like we weren't entitled to have them to begin with. It's a big part of how I ended up in a very abusive relationship for a decade. Your attitude is truly a breath of fresh air. It's so lovely that I found myself tearing up when you said positive, supportive things.
As a roller skater, ignoring the rest of everything, the fact that it takes someone falling to use pads for one. Also they're asking them to turn? That's literally taken me weeks to get used to and even then, it's not smooth! Not wearing wrist guards? How did none of them break their wrists???
If they were ACTUALLY going to make a commercial were there was skating, they would absolutely be asking the casting directors for a model or actress with skating on there special skills list. they don't want to train someone to skate the day of the shoot, not to mention the insurance nightmare if the model got hurt. absolutely ridiculous that they make them do this. Then pushing through her boundaries and making her shoot with the male models is disgusting and the entire production should be ashamed of themselves.
I love this channel and the reaction videos on ANTM. It took Jessica’s RU-vid Channel to realise they were running a scam on Television for years on end.
It would have been nice if they could have pulled one of the other contestants to be Kayla’s partner in the scene. Poor thing should have never had to go through that

I know it was the 2000s so would NEVER have happened, but how nice would it have been if Mr Jay said to Kayla "Since you're not comfortable with the male model, would you prefer a female model instead?" I doubt it ever crossed anyone's mind.
On a much lighter note, as soon as I heard the concept, I already knew they'd make fun of them for the skating abilities (or lack thereof). The audacity they have to not be perfect at skating on camera and have to memorize lines.
The judges were so hard on Anne for her fears and nerves but not one of them congratulated her for not giving up. She fought through it. This whole "commercial" and the ANTM team were shameful. Just shameful.
isnt it telling how the judges got mad at the model who giggled when her commercial was going badly, but then the judges openly giggled and laughed at the girl who was petrified of falling and viscerally uncomfortable. Girlies, i say this every episode, but those judges derive pleasure from these girls being miserable and that really is just a fact.
One thing I think people don't often talk about with ANTM, and it's probably because the conversation would be so huge, is the undercurrent of American "you have to be willing to degrade yourself for money" thought that runs through it. Here, Mr Jay doesn't say she needs therapy because she needs to deal with it for her own mental health. He's concerned because "you're telling me you'd be willing to throw away a job because of this". This show has a very deep thread running through it of "you cannot afford to be selective with the jobs you book", and that's a thread that often runs through American society as a whole, because workers are seen as easily replaceable and not as people offering unique skills. Workers are warm bodies who should be so desperate for money that they will throw away their own health and happiness for it. Once, when I was about 20, I had a maid job as a hotel. And one Sunday, I called in sick with a bad migraine. My supervisor on the phone said to me, "I could have hired 20 other girls for this job, you know". It was a threat. 'You should be so desperate for money that you'd rather come here and work through illness than stay home sick'. This show exemplifies that to the nth degree. It pushes it under the guise that because there are a finite number of modeling jobs, you should be willing to eat an entire can of spaghettios while catapulting down a skihill to prove you will do ANYTHING for this dream of yours. It is the same American undercurrent that looks at the unemployed or homeless and says "why can't they just get a job" as though the idea is that ANY job should be seen as something we will grovel for. That rather than those working running the market, we should be grateful the kind manager or CEO will give our slovenly gross selves a chance to work for them, and we should be willing to do anything to keep their good graces. This show helped teach a whole generation of girls about that, about how we should suck it up and be willing to do anything that comes our way, because saying no to money or fame, saying we are more valuable to ourselves than this, is wrong. And it's not wrong. Even those of us who are just applying for jobs in retail or fast food deserve to be choosy and want a job where we will be treated humanely, a job that will serve OUR needs. It's good to say no. It's good to be picky. You owe yourself that.
As someone who was sexually assaulted at one point in my life, I am absolutely astonished (and yet somehow not at all surprised) that Jay had the gall to try and psychologically analyze this girl and tell her what she needed in that moment, in order to 'get a good shoot', despite having absolutely no training whatsoever. That is SO damaging and potentially set this poor thing back so much more. Any of these girls essentially being forced to interact intimately with another human being is borderline sexual harassment in and of itself, but to have endured that as a child and then be blindsided by it? Disgusting.
I remember seeing this as a kid and being so confused why Mr. Jay was so nonchalant when Kayla was confessing her trauma and fear to him. He just didn't seen to come across as very empathetic in my opinion. I guess it worked for her at the time but I remember back in the day even thinking 'well gee thats all he gotta say'. I probably would have been crying if someone just told me this massively important thing that not even their family knows. I feel like he drastically misinterpreted her concern for 'oh she doesn't want to kiss a dude cuz she's gay'. Whereas obviously it was because she was a victim of sexual violence. So messed up that they didn't take her seriously enough
Downgrading sexual assault to merely a “painful memory” and giving unsolicited mental health advice on how she should deal with that past trauma is a truly ignorant and extremely dangerous thing to do. I think there was a part of Mr. Jay that felt for her and wanted to help, but his ignorance and blatant dismissal of her experience is just so hard to watch. These show runners and the on air judges and creatives should be thankful that they were never taken to court for criminal negligence. ALL of them acted in bad faith by doing what they did to the contestants on this show and Kayla is just one example of their outright refusal to act in the best interest of the young women and young men that appeared on this show. Really really shameful
