ANTM Judges Don’t Care About Model's Car Accident 

Girl: I just got hit by a car and bashed my head in and almost died Tyra: when I was modeling in Paris in the 90’s I was hit by cars everyday and I still was fierce and didn’t let that stop me

I’m convinced Tyra and the other judges just have a humiliation kink.

This is SO UNREALISTIC! Any proffesional actor recieves weeks or months of dialec couching to master an accent, working with the script at the same time

“Fashion has no sympathy or empathy.” Yeah, we wouldn’t have known. It’s a shock to all of us that abusive workplaces that doesn’t accommodate employees were a thing.

This show just does not care about people with disabilities period. They made a legally blind girl do a complicated runway IN THE DARK with NO REHEARSAL, they made a deaf man do a photoshoot in the dark so he couldn't receive any directions, they refuse to accomedate a contestant with a traumatic brain injury... It's disgusting. I have problems with my memory due to trauma so my heart really goes out to Brittany. I constantly have to remind people at work of my memory problems and to remind them to have compassion because it's not that I'm not listening during trainings, it's that my brain has literal problems that make remembering difficult, especially if it's something that I don't have to do every day. Edit: I also remember them eliminating an autistic girl because she had "issues communicating" or something. This show is so ableist and gross!

Disabilities are NOT a “shortcoming” or something you can work through. Brain cells don’t repair themselves and she tried to do it despite what she can’t control. They were all about tokenizing Nyle, but the second disability is inconvenient…

I love how Jay has gone around doing interviews trying to distance himself from the horror of this show but he was CLEARLY a main player.

I'm on the autism spectrum and it effects my short term working memory. When someone is disabled, for whatever reason, accommodations NEED to be offered for the person. Not only did Jay and the judges lack empathy, their behavior is discrimination.

I feel like Jay and the judges just don't realize how debilitating and frustrating things like memory loss can be, but that's no excuse for not giving Brittany accommodations. I have days where I have major brain fog and no matter how hard I try, I literally can't put two cohesive thoughts together. Imagine you were doing yoga with no flexibility, and the instructor came along and told you that it was your fault you couldn't touch your toes because you had emotional baggage. Anyway, I think Brittany actually had one of the best Aussie accents of the bunch, especially considering what she was going through.

As an Australian, this was painful to watch

They are so disgusting. They make it a mission to exploit a model’s trauma then act surprised they struggle with it. I still don’t forget her basic twitter apology. I think every model that wants to confront Tyra, deserves for her to sit there and hear ALL their grievances in person. No sympathy or empathy for Tyra

I watched all these seasons multiple times when I was young, and it can put the viewer in a negative mindset. Like I was always rolling my eyes at the models, thinking everything was an excuse. When I got older, I started to see the patterns and how manipulative it was. Especially, when I started reading about how many people became severely depressed after appearing on reality shows.

A TBI (traumatic brain injury) has an very substantial effect on a person, no matter the severity. She has had to adapt a lot, no doubt. I would like to hear Tyra try to affect an Aussie accent on short notice as well as Brittany did (I think hers was among the best accents)

They really put Brittany and Jael through so much this season (RIP Jael). Jael had to do the photo shoot about death right after her friend overdosed, they gave Brittany a literal weave that put her in so much pain and damaged her scalp, then refused to give Brittany proper accommodations for her traumatic brain injury during this commercial shoot 🙄

Please make that compilation! I think it will show a very disturbing pattern in Tyra’s behaviour where she uses that soft tone of voice to make the girls open up about something so intimate and vulnerable only to shove them down afterwards when they are put in the bottom 2 because of it.

The funniest part of this whole thing is that Raja (makeup artist) is telling the girls how to do the accent. He's from the US 😂

The fact that Mr. Jay says “emotional damage” and “baggage” proves that he didn’t believe her when she said she was injured and her memory was actually effected.

God I used to watch this show religiously when I was younger and now it's so hard to watch. This one hit home because my mum has short term memory issues from brain surgery. Mr Jay and ANTM are being ableist and it is NOT okay. And it's more than alright to get emotional when you're being told to persevere and overcome something that you physically can't. Memory issues are a disability and you should accommodate for that. Just imagining them asking a model in a wheelchair to just be tough and pull through being asked to stand up. UGH

Tyra would literally tell a paraplegic model in a basketball photoshoot that fashion doesn't care she can't dunk, figure it out. Short term memory loss is a medical condition. In any real job situation this would be a huge lawsuit

Shocked this didn't give them ideas for future episodes. "Walk down this runway which is actually a highway during rush hour. Get hit? Make it fashion. Bleeding? Use it as lipstick. Smize your way to victory. Last thing, if you get hit, most importantly, apologize to the car. NO COMPLAINING"

They’re treating her like she’s just nervous. It’s not only a disability like dyslexia that LEGALLY REQUIRES accommodations, but also very traumatic. I was in a car accident when I was 7 years old that still affects me 18 years later, regardless of a lifetime of therapy and treatment. Not only do I still have the physical trauma to my spine but I can’t drive because of PTSD. I’m just imagining being on a show like that, being forced to drive, I would be having a panic attack. I’m so proud of her for getting through that. This show is awful.

I won't comment on the rest because it makes me extremely angry, so I'll just say about the accent thing: When actors have to do a different accent for a role, they get dialect coaching. It could take them weeks to learn how to perfect a new accent, and still not all actors can do it. And they are professionals who have already trained their voice. Asking amateur American models to do an Australian accent for a commercial on the spot is just ridiculous. And unfortunately, it's not the only thing about this show that's ridiculous...

RIP Jael, she brought such beautiful energy to the world. I don’t think the show treated he girls fair. The girls were borderline abused

People don't take short term memory loss seriously. I have diagnosed short term memory loss myself, and when I mention that I get "oh, I can be forgetful too!" or "Everyone forgets!" and it is frustrating. People don't think that it is a big deal unfortunately. But when you have it, it does affect you every day.

Someone mentioned Brittany was able to memorize lines earlier in the season and it seemed like she was using it as an excuse this time. But it’s very likely that having to do an unfamiliar accent on top of memorizing lines put more stress on her brain. I have memory issues with adhd and one change can turn something I usually have no problem doing into a challenge. I felt hurt listening to the judges’ responses because I know how it feels to be criticized about something I have no control over.

If they can’t sympathize with somebody who’s been injured in a car accident then I don’t know what’s serious enough for these judges

I do think that it’s true that the fashion industry doesn’t really have sympathy for these kinds of situations (at least back when this was filmed), but that doesn’t make it ok. They kept saying “find a way to make it work for you” but if that were the case, she wouldn’t have been given the script the DAY OF the shoot. They would’ve given it to her days prior so that she could learn it properly. And then to throw an accent on top of that is just setting her up for failure.

Jael was such a kind and compassionate person. I'm so sad about what happened to her. Beautiful, beautiful soul.

I love how Jay just dismisses her literal BRAIN DAMAGE as "baggage." Good god...

That line really means "we can do whatever we want to you and hide behind our profession.". This sentiment leads to abuse plain and simple. Casting couch, economic exploitation, and on and on. It's pretty terrifying that not only do the contestants see it work but the giant viewing population of kids and teens do too.

Did y'all notice that the model who was second in shooting the commercial had no cue cards...when she was struggling. Everyone else who struggled had them. Another thing is that when they showed her video they didn't cut off the part when she laughed/chuckled. I feel like they wanted to get rid of her.

One thing that stands out to me is the judges keep saying to develop a strategy, learn how to work around your "shortcomings"...but she was never informed in advance of this assignment to have time for her to develop a strategy........................................ 🤔

1. I stand with Brittany. You're right Jessica. It's not just baggage or shortcomings. It's how her brain functions after trauma. After I had COVID I have so much memory loss and getting back into acting has been so hard. 2. They should have hired a dialect coach.

I'm no expert but I find it very hard to believe that anyone in the real working world would say Brittany is "defected". Absolutely disgusting behavior from the judges and Mr. Jay in this episode

The theory about Tyra’s voice and exploiting these girls trauma is true. She even invited some of them to her show to talk about some of their stuff

Got in a cycling accident where I bruised my pelvic bone due to the handlebar hitting my pelvis. I've been dealing with chronic pain for years, so I didn't know until about three months later. My manager at my old job said that I "seemed fine", commented that I wasn't trying hard enough to find a solution, accused me of relying on sick leave. I eventually had to quit my job, robbing me off any government benefits.

I was hit by a car when I was 15 luckily I only fractured both of my ankles and had no injury to my head but it was still very traumatic and had to learn to walk again I spent my 16th birthday with boots on both my feet. These judges are heartless and have no sympathy for what she must struggle with daily.

life is so unfair sometimes. Jael struggled so much to detox and sober from her drug addiction and she finally accomplished it, only to pass away a few years later of breast cancer... hope she is resting in peace

Yep. Tyra goes soft and empathetic when prompting the models to be vulnerable and open up - she isn’t trying to help or show support, she’s looking for their weaknesses so she can exploit them a few episodes later 🙃

As I see it, fashion is an art form. Art is meant to evoke emotions, to make people feel something. Cutting out compassion and sympathy is something that deprives fashion of one of its many beautiful facets. They always say, that 'just being pretty is not enough' and that they want to promote inclusivity, but they sure aren't acting like they mean it.

I hate how he is like "she's so affected by this emotional baggage" like excuse me sir a serious car crash can be extremely traumatic and if you're having memory loss problems 5 years later I don't think it's just her emotions alone it sounds like she probably has some brain damage, it's so cruel how they treat this entire thing

What is this obsession with non-disabled people being afraid to use the word 'disabled'? Brittany has a literal disability. A TBI is a disability, just like fibromyalgia, cerebral palsy, or spina bifida to name very few. Disabled is not a bad word, and most workplaces are in fact required to adhere to certain laws pertaining to helping the disabled person perform the job they're doing.

This is infuriating… her short term memory being messed up due to a car accident is nothing she can control in a way where she will ever have it normally functioning :/ They tell her to use „strategies“, well they just needed to give her like 1 or 2 hours more to learn it as a strategy.

I would have loved to see Tyra pull off an authentic Australian accent in under 2 minutes.

I don’t know about other countries but in the UK, if your employer doesn’t make reasonable adjustments for an employee who has any kind of disability or health issue, it counts as discrimination under the law. This was incredibly wrong

I feel so bad for Brittany here. While I wasn't in a car accident, several years ago I did suffer a nasty drug overdose. Thankfully, the people I was with were able to bring me back, and while my organs and bodily functions are normal (there are reports where people who were without oxygen for as long as I was suffered organ failure), my memory is shot. There are significant portions of my life that are just blank, and I have difficulty retaining information. I'm supremely grateful that this is the only lasting damage from that incident. Sometimes people get annoyed with me when I can't remember things, but I always tell them "How do you think I feel, not being able to remember my own life?" For this show to unfairly judge and criticize someone who went through a horrific accident as Brittany did (as well as Jael with her own struggles), it's just disgusting and shows how out of touch and heartless they are.

I feel for Brittany, not being able to remember things when you could before due to a TBI sucks. Good on her for keeping going and not giving up. 💗 I was in a car wreck where I ended up in a coma due to a TBI and my short term memory is like Swiss cheese now, I get it. Nigel is a 🍆.

Just because it isn't visible doesn't mean it isn't a disability that deserves respect and acknowledgment period. PS: Defect is extremely offensive with any kind of anything humans don't have defects.

as an Australian I have only seen like one or two professional actors do the Aussie accent properly. Usually they’re British too. I can’t think of an American who has done a good Aussie accent. A good side by side comparison is actually the video game FFXIII where they have Vanille who was voiced by a local girl from Melbourne and Fang who was voiced by an American. Such a great comparison of what our true accents sound like vs. what everyone else thinks we sound like. That said the accents vary across the country. As you get up north it’s more thick and broad. You get that more ‘classic’ accent but even then it sounds different to this too. Edit to add: Britt’s accent was actually the most natural sounding one

“Fashion has no sympathy” i learnt this as a fashion student. The fashion industry could be very enjoyable and creative or nasty 🤢 and brutal with such rude snobbish arrogant perfection unrealistic individuals. My experience as a fashion student exposed me to this. Long story short I regret wasting a few years of my life at that useless fashion institute. I had options I didn’t know existed. I could have learn a lot with self learning and research.

I thought models were supposed to model, not be doing accents, but what do I know 🤷🤷🤷

Short term memory isn’t a short coming, it’s a disability. It really affects your life. They needed to compensate her.

I remember that girl. They gave her a really bad weave in her hair that hurt her so much. I felt so bad for her. I can’t believe how much I liked this show when I was a kid. I did have opinions of how they treated the girl but, looking back on it years later I thought this show is CRAZY!!!!

I was in a bike accident without a helmet and needed over 13 stitches in my head.. I dropped our of school shortly and could not focus or remember ever since, whereas I had a great memory and focus before. Before I would draw a portrait for 12 hours straight until it was done, after I can't focus for more than 2 minutes. Also my impulse control is terrible. My head was swollen three times the size for two weeks in the hospital and I nearly died of blood loss. It really is a tragic and real result of an accident.. A smart person made forgetful

As someone with a learning disability this is beyond upsetting and infuriating to watch. I’ve been spoken to like this my entire life, just last year my roll model teacher brought me to tears in her office saying that I don’t look disabled and I need to try harder. She said you are smart enough to do it just try harder put in more work. I got 3 hours of sleep every night for 3 months straight studying and memorizing the material and it still wasn’t enough them because I couldn’t spell it. I put all my other classes aside to focus on that one class still ended up with an F. Some people and sadly most people are just cruel and don’t care. “Your learning disability isn’t an excuse” those are the words of my childhood. It took me 27 years to finally stick up for myself and advocate for myself. People with disabilities of all forms can probably relate to this. It’s a never ending struggle.

I was in Australia as a kid. (Dad worked there) it’s super easy to put on an Australian accent for me. But whenever I’ve heard someone from the states try it they sound either South African or English. There’s no way this is attainable without practice. Ridiculousness.

So I'm a special education teacher and what I hear is Britney saying she has struggles with working and short term memory due to a TBI (traumatic brain injury) which falls under ADA. On ANY job (modeling or otherwise) she is ENTITLED TO BY LAW reasonable work place accomidations. If she was required to memorize a script short notice an accomidation could look like her agency getting a copy of the script earlier than normal (like within 2 weeks or more of the shoot) or that she could have cue cards or a monitor. Those are things she is entitled to BY LAW. It is not a DEFECT or makes her less than. I hate the way they made her feel and on any actual job this would never fly.

I was in a car accident that caused me serious pain. I had bosses that wouldn't let up trying to get me to do heavy labor. I have permanent neck damage and they still wanted me to push carts and lift boxes at different jobs.

Mr. Jay was rude. He called her issue that is a part of her life an emotional scar and baggage. It's same as telling someone with life long back issues that is trying to live their life to the fullest that when their back is acting up and hurt, that it's an emotional scar and baggage and they just need to get over it. This lady is trying to live her life as best as possible. It's just that Mr. Jay isn't gonna tell the truth and say that "this challenge requires people to have great short term memory while speaking in an accent none of the contestants knows". Saying the truth would get him in trouble, so he ends up saying stuff that means just get over it when he didn't have to say anything. Yes it's true that a lot of people need to just get over their issues 'cause they're not trying or that's the only way to move on. That doesn't count in this situation. It's a permanent issue for her that will be bad at some times and there's not cure for it. The only thing is to let her have a decent amount of time to remember the lines. She seems to be way past the "just get over it". She seems to have 'cause she's living her life to the fullest (as it seems since she's on a competition show) and was trying super hard to do this challenge. Her disability is preventing her from doing as well as others.

I actually despise Jay in this episode…the way he was acting and talking about that girls TBI from a car accident (or rather talking _around_ her accident) had me livid! I don’t understand how anybody can treat anyone like that. How do people completely lack empathy and understanding?! Ridiculous! Same with the other judges! They all said horrible, ignorant things!

They phrase it the way they do because they don't want to admit that Brittany is disabled and they just don't feel like providing accommodations.

"You have to overcome the defect of being hit by a car and the flaw of losing your short term memory. We'll openly treat you as less than human unless you can drop the baggage of being disabled." I'd be nervous too if I was being told my worth was being based on something I can't do.

You should react to ANTM makeovers - see if they are more or less or a model after their changes. I’m convinced they gave certain girls makeovers to sabotage them

Wow, that must have been really awkward for at least the majority of the crew. I have a British accent and for someone to be tasked to do a fake British accent would piss me off, there’s a ton of beautiful Brits, get one of them to do it

Ppl pointing out that she didn’t have trouble memorizing lines before: it doesn’t happen all the time, so why would she want to bring it up when she just managed to not forget the lines? I just want to hug her

As someone with a working memory disorder, this would be impossible. Not to mention that something literally wrong with your brain isn’t something you can just “push through”.

It’s a wild ride watching this back, I remember watching this as a teenager and I really internalised some of the “ok this is how professionals and teachers can treat you” 🙃 SO glad things are changing and we’re better at calling this stuff out now

Let's also not forget that this show made a girl who was completley night blind, walk a runway that was almost completely dark. and also made a deaf man do a photoshoot in the complete dark, so he had no sight or sound during the photoshoot. So this show does 0 accommodation for contestants with actual and serious disabilities that would majorly impact their performances. Despicable.

Part of me is like... knowing you have short term memory issues, knowing this show usually has an element of "do a commercial, memorize lines," I'm not sure why Brittany would want to subject herself to this. But then again, back in the day (and this was like, 8 seasons in? I think?) the show really had a much better reputation. It doesn't seem unreasonable for Brittany to assume that some sort of accommodation can be made for her injury so that she has an equal chance as everyone else. Or at least that as fellow humans they'll empathize with her struggles.

I watch your videos since I came back from USA (I'm Brazilian). The same things happened to me while I was studying musical theatre there. They wouldn't teach me how to make an accent properly, they would just criticize me and tell me there was no place for me in musical theatre because I was Brazilian. And they always tried to give me Hispanic parts but I don't speak Spanish, I speak Portuguese, and I got very very frustated. They literally wouldn't teach me anything or give me any clear instructions, they would just yell at me and make me feel like I wasn't good enough.

It’s almost like you have to straight up tell someone you have BRAIN DAMAGE for them to not think you’re just faking some emotional trauma.

Ah yes, the classic "You have a mental disability? Get over it!". This attitude right here boils my blood so much! I have autism and i know how frustrating it is to remember the simplest things and do things on the fly. The way the judges shrugged at Brits explination is disgusting.

From Australia, and have literally never used the word Sheila for anything. Made it to the end... the accents are terrible. I've been told by actors that our accent is one of the hardest to replicate and sound authentic so these girls had no chance.

I use to love Tyra and ANTM but once I grew up I really realized that Tyra, the judges and ANTM is so destructive and toxic to little girl and women all over the world. Also what really gets me is that they act and pretend to care about these girls just enough to make u wonder if there’s something wrong with u. then u mature and realize they where just horrible and that is full blown manipulative and abusive way of doing thing. I will NEVER let my daughter watch anything like this.

This whole show is such mental torture . I am ashamed I used to watch this when I was in high-school.

Traumatic brain injury= you need to work past it. Insane, I feel so bad for her, there is so little she can actually do, depending on how severe the injury was and the fact she managed without using up like five times the time compared to the other girls is amazing

As someone who has been in a coma due to a head injury and having to work extra hard because my memory sucks. And I had a concussion during the lock down o.O People never understood. I remember watching this and it pissed me off ..no empathy or understanding.

Now I’m curious to see your reaction to the next episode after this - ANTM Cycle 8 top 5 episode where big incident at Go sees happens and swimsuit Women’s mag/ Men’s Magazine photoshoot And even the top 4 episode where one model was rly sick but still participated in the shoot and the usual the judges asks each girl “ who do you think has the most/least potential” and results were the talking point

My short term memory was severely damaged from a stroke causing TBI, and I remember watching this episode and feeling heartbroken that this would happen. Sadly as an adult I experienced this happen so much. In so many circumstances she should be able to ask for an accommodation without flack, but ANTM of course acts like disabled people can't act.

It makes my heart happy that younger generations can so articulately see through the bs I grew up on and took on board. This show was incredibly traumatizing to contestants. Sadly, Jael, the girl sent home, has since passed away. Tyra continued exploiting her for ratings on her talk show before she died.

Every time you post a new reaction vid, I watch it and think, ‘is this a prank show to embarrass models without them knowing? Where’s the hidden camera?’

Honestly I have to agree with Tyra on one thing. Fashion industry, along with Entertainment industry in general, is really shady and just doesn't care. Not you obviously, but a particular sector. It's not fair at all. I don't know if it's more sympathetic now than back then, but what I don't like is how Tyra just tells the girls the experience from HER time. Girl, it's a different time now.

What I HATE , is how they say all these cons about the modeling industry and say "that's how it is" , *_when this show was their 2O SEASON, 1O+ YEARS OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE IT AND CHANGE INTO SOMETHING FAIR. INTO SOMETHING BETTER!_* but instead....nah. let's just use this platform to not only keep these wrongful standards, but now not just only to the models a part of it. *LET'S BROADCAST IT TO THE WHOLE WORLD! I'm a model and disabled (invisible disabilities). Anyhow, photoshoots are always on my terms. In fact, photographers are usually the ones to tell me to not push myself or not do something because they don't want to tire me out or injure me. All photographers I've worked with have been so understanding and kind. Also, no one in the real modelling world takes on jobs they don't feel comfortable doing, eg, I hardly know any models that do acting jobs? They are so unrealistic with their expectations and they are literally giving the modelling industry a bad name due to false information..
