Aussie Rules was developed in the 1850s. It's technically the oldest codified football game in the world. It's Australia's best kept secret!

I love when people say "Oh it's like soccer, basketball, football and rugby put together", when Australian Football is actually older than all these other sports.

The Grand Final is actually usually played in front of about 100,000. It's huge!!

Starts in March and goes until about September there’s about 23 games in a season and it’s usually played every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Around 5.30 pm eastern time. This was good to watch.

I'm an Aussie in Melbourne and unfortunately the past 2 years the AFL grand final was played in 2 different states. We had 267 days in lockdown, 6 separate lockdowns, was awful but we got thru.

In Perth WA we don’t have it bad as places like Melbourne, Queensland, Sydney, some games were restricted people, some had no people at stadiums, I’m a west coast eagles fan but look up the top 20 goals, marks and bumps.

The season runs from March to September with games being held Thursday to Sunday every week with the odd marquee game being held mid week

The women’s league is happening right now (AFLW). It’s a new competition, so the skills are still a little amateurish, but it’s great to see their development in recent years. The men’s league (AFL) starts in mid-March. Finals are played in September.

We're managing okay with covid. For regular games we had periods of playing without any crowds, but for the grand finals the last two years we just moved it to cities with low covid cases so it could run with crowds. Almost all the teams are from the State Victoria, since that's where the game originated, so that's where the grand final is usually held. Unfortunately Victoria has one of the highest population densities so covid is easier to spread than in some of the other states.

The AFL Grand Final is usually Held at the MCG ( Melbourne Cricket Ground)…. But Melbourne had major lockdowns in 2020 and 2021…. 2020 Grand Final was held in Brisbane…. 2021 Grand Final was in Perth……. Winners of the Last few Grand Finals…. From 2017… Richmond, 2018 West Coast, 2019 Richmond, 2020 Richmond…2021 Melbourne.

Good react boys. I am biased, I grew up playing footy - but it's cool to see others watch it for the first time. Knowing when to bounce the ball is just an experience skill - when kids are young they overrun or underrun before bouncing all the time. The penalty is a free kick to the opposition, and it sucks to hand the ball to the bloke you have just beaten, so you learn pretty quick.

The game continued during COVID, with a reduced length of time for a match, reduced rounds and reduced crowd numbers. But it's getting back to normal slowly. So hopefully crowd numbers will be much higher this season and the action will be back to normal. One thing that people from overseas miss about this game is that most times, the game will ebb and flow and so often it is not until the final quarter, and even the final couple of minutes that you know who might win the game. Watching it is so often a roller coaster of excitement and stress, it really is a fantastic game to watch.

AFL has its origins from a game called Marngrook first played by the Indigenous people of Australia.

It's basically a cold weather game. When a team was made in Brisbane, they had to provide ice vests so players would not get heat stroke. (Go the Lions! )

Per head of Capita the most attended game in the world, record attendance is 121,969 in 1970, since then the MCG has replaced some standing room with seating and it only holds about 100,000 people now.

Look up the USAFL. It's a very popular sport in the USA. The field is not 120 yards in length it's actually 180 metres long. We use a metric measurement.

Womens comp is on now (feb) but the real footy starts in March and goes to end of August with the Granny (Grand Final, like the superbowl) usually being the last Satdee in September.

i know you guys posted this video ages ago - but one thing a lot of people bring up when reacting is how do they know when to bounce the ball? the actual distance is 15 meters (but converted to 16 yards for americans to understand). a meter is slightly larger than a yard .. so the players and referees usually judge it by roughly 15 steps..

The season was a bit messed up during Covid. The state of Victoria had a lot of covid spread and is also the home state of AFL so sees a lot of games, many games were played without crowds.Then they picked up the competition and moved it to other states where there could be crowds. For the last 2 years the grand final was held in other states, WA last year, QLD tafe year before.

Season runs from March to September with the finals over September.

The grand final is usually at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but with Covid being an issue down here it was in Brisbane in 2020 and Perth in 2021 where they didn't have as many restrictions.

Glad you enjoyed our game. A few clarifications: The ground is much larger than 120 yards long. There is not a standard size, but most grounds are around 180 m (197 yards) long. Although it looks like the game was developed by taking aspects of basketball, rugby, soccer, American football, handball etc, it is older than all of these. The first game was played in Melbourne in 1858 and the rules were codified in 1859. I don't know why they say that the attendance at the Grand Final is 90,000+; it is actually 100,000 (the record attendance was at the 1970 Grand Final, at a time when they could pack loads of spectators in standing room, when 121,696 attended. The AFLW (Aussie rules played by women) is currently in season. The men's season will begin on 16 March and the Grand Final will be 24 September. It is available to stream overseas. The last two seasons have been affected by COVID. The 2020 season was interrupted for a few weeks and the season was shortened. They had to move the games around to states that were less affected by COVID, so we have seen very little football played in Victoria in 2020 and 2021. The Grand Final was played outside of Victoria for the first time in history in 2020 (Brisbane) and in 2021 it was held in Perth. We have had severe restrictions here in Victoria, but they have been significantly lifted and the plan is to open the grounds to 100% capacity again (fingers crossed!).

The first game is tonight, with the rematch of the Grand Final, between Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs. From here, it goes on for the next 26 weeks, ending on the last Saturday in September! You should be able to catch the games later at night, but live on Fox Sports or ESPN!

Reasonably sure Aussie Rules was an adaptation of Galic Football and was originally played on a field a mile long.

The fields are between 135m and 185m in length .. with the preferred 'adult' player field 165m in length and 135m wide.

Great reaction, especially from dad, one of the better videos. Yes Covid hit us hard with lock downs and 2020 had a shortened season with less or no crowds at all. Western Australia (Perth) were fairly covid free so they hosted the 2021 grand final with a crowd of around 60,000 instead of Melbourne's M.C.G ( Melbourne Cricket Ground ) Melbourne were still in lock down.. the 2022 season which starts in March looks like things might go back to normal with capacity crowds again. You guys do have AFL competitions going in the U.S. although amateurish at best. Check out to see if there is a competition near you.

My husband and I were at the 2020 grand final. At that stage, there were very few covid restrictions during the game, and even then, they weren't really enforced.

they didn't really explain that when you hand pass it to someone they are fair game to hit/tackle but, when you kick pass it and they catch it in the air they are safe from contact and can either kick a free kick at the goal or try to hand or kick pass it to someone else..

Can’t leave the house?? I'm in West Aus. I don't even know anyone who's had covid.. It's pissed a lot of people off because we have a hard border and can't travel, but all my family is alive and my life hasn't been impacted whatsoever except for the odd few weeks of mask mandates. There are zero restriction in most of the rest of Australia. Everything is open, everyone is at work

When you say It's a mixture of other sports, it's more likely the other way around. It was codified in 1858. It's the oldest major football code in the world. Nothing whatsoever to do with any other sport. It was originally designed to keep cricket players fit during the off season, hence the size and shape of the field - they were originally cricket grounds.

I'm in Melbourne and haven't been able to attend a single game since 2019 because of Chinese Coronavirus(I'm allowed to call it that!). It's been so crap, I've gotta take the W wherever I can - no matter how pitifully minor it may be...

Pygmy Possums are super cute, all of these are but the possums are the size of a finger. None of this has anything to do with footy but you said Koala Bear. They get mad when they hear that. Do not insult a big red or grey male Kangaroo. They are the one’s that are taller than you. They will lean back on their tail and take you out with their powerful back legs and claws. Many of our native animals are unique to our Country and beautiful. They don’t play footy.
