We've had competition for punters for a while that have come from Australia. Ben Graham and Saverio Rocco have played for different teams in the NFL, and I want to say that one has even won a super bowl. Dustin Fletcher's son turned down the AFL to play college football. I'm not sure which university he's at, though. I'm from Nebraska, where the state religion is College Football. I saw my first AFL game in 1995. I haven't looked back. It is that fun to both watch and play, because the action is nonstop. You don't have that plan-play-stop-plan pattern that makes the NFL boring. Now, to the scores. Think about it this way. Goals are like touchdowns, worth 6 points. Behinds are like the extra point, worth one point. But instead of lumping it all into the full score, you single out how many of those you've had, and then add it to the total. So for the score, if you had 20 goals, that would be 20 "touchdowns", at 6 points each. If you had 10 behinds, that's like 10 extra points. Then you add that together for the full score. 20*6= 120, + 10 = 130. That that's how the scores can get so close or absolute blowouts. Sometimes a game can be decided by a single point kicked after the clock runs out. And yes, some have even ended in a draw/tie, so the action goes down to the last second. Finally, we have an AFL competition here in the US, called the USAFL. You'd like that. I'll get to more of that later, right now, I'll give you a choice: hits or marks. If you want hits, go with Here Comes the Boom: AFL's biggest hits. If you want marks, go with the Top 50 AFL marks of all time, and be sure to watch them all. Welcome to the AFL!

"Its got running " players run 8/9 miles per game. The best recent effort was 11+ miles in a game. There are currently approx. 65 Aust. punters in US colleges and 4 in the NFL. 6 of the last 7 Ray Guy Award winners for the best punter in College Football, have been Aussies. AFL players can be any size the smallest in 5'6" and the current tallest is 6'11", and he is American, watch "Mason Cox - Don't Believe in Never" good short vid on his journey to AFL.. AFL is played non -stop for 4x20mins qtrs. plus time-on, so approx. 30 minutes each Qtr. That's why they are the fittest footballers in the world, all players have to have all the skills, kicking, handballing, tackling, marking, bouncing, Bumping, etc. as well as toughness & courage. "Bouncing it every 16 yards," as we use the metric system it is 15 metres (close enough to 16 yards), they don't measure it but most players judge it as about every 10 strides. The reason for the bounce is otherwise a very fast player could just take the ball and outrun everyone. Scoring - 20- 10 -130 is 20 goals x 6 points, plus 10 points x1 point = 130. Unlike soccer fans there are very few fights & fans are never segregated. Been going to the AFL most of my life I have seen very few fights among fans. they measure the 16 yards to bounce the ball as roughly 10 steps. It's not strictly enforced, but if a player has taken 15-20 steps without bouncing the ball, the umpire will blow the whistle & award a free kick to the other team. Some players will bounce the ball more frequently during a long run to avoid getting caught. But players will often get through a whole game without bouncing the ball because they're only taking a few steps before handpassing or kicking it to a team mate
@SonnyBubba
@SonnyBubba 3 года назад
“Sixteen yards” sounds so precise it’s misleading. The rule is 15m which implies there’s 2-3 meters give and take. The way American football works, every yard is fought for, while in Aussie Rules nobody would think it’s a strategic mistake to pass the ball backwards three meters to an open teammate. The “every yard counts” mindset has been ingrained into those players’ minds.
@91Fusion
@91Fusion 3 года назад
@@SonnyBubba that's right. The switch play is common in AFL, soccer, hockey, even basketball. Retreat backwards and pass the ball quickly crossfield to take advantage of weak defense on the other side
@heystevo82
@heystevo82 3 года назад
Well, not all AFL players are built like basketballers. That was a slight exaggeration. There are many players under 6ft in the AFL. Most of the smaller guys are either fast midfielders used for their speed and agility; or they're small forwards, whose job it is to play the ball at ground level (crucial when your taller forwards are being outplayed in the air) and also to act as a 'crumber' - to lurk around a pack of taller players and scoop up the loose ball when it hits the deck (literally picking up the crumbs) and take off towards the goals with it. Bouncing the ball every 15 metres on the run is not exact obviously, but is usually around 10 strides, depending on the size of the player. You get penalized and lose possession of the ball if you run too far without bouncing. With hits (also called bumps), it is the same as tackles - should be between the shoulders and the knees and ideally with the side of your body - called a 'hip and shoulder'. Contact with the head is penalized harshly, often with suspension, especially if it is deemed that the head-high contact could have been avoided. Sometimes it is unavoidable, like if the ball is loose and instead of kicking it off the ground, the attacking player bends down to scoop it up - that puts their head at about hip-height with their opponent, and if said opponent is already launching themselves at them, they may not be able to stop in time... players get knocked unconscious this way. Concussions are not uncommon. I'm thrilled you're enjoying learning about this sport, it's the best sport in the world, as far as I'm concerned. The varying skills and athleticism required is incredible. Some midfielders run 10-15 kilometres each game and some of the forwards kick goals from incredibly tight angles, and incredible distances. Some can kick accurately from 60 metres. I hope you do check out some games this year, check out Mason Cox's story, he's an American who only took up the sport about 5 years ago but has been selected regularly to play in the senior squad by his team, the Collingwood Magpies. I'm not a fan of them, but credit where credit's due. He's done well to get to where he is for someone so inexperienced.

Something I haven’t seen mentioned... If you want to play AFL professionally, you have to be able to kick and handball both sides of the body. So, kick with both feet. Nearly every player has a preferred foot, but they can all kick very well on their ‘non-preferred’ side as well. You guys don’t want to play AFL. The *best* players might make AUD$5-$10 million over their career. If you want fame and fortune, stick to NFL. If you want to truly test your skills, speed, strength, endurance and toughness, in front of crowds, week in week out of 50k+, with finals crowds over 90k+, then maybe AFL is for you.

bullshit, how many times do you see someone not being able to kick or handball on their non preferred side, happens every game, only the elite, and that is why they are the elite can use both sides of the body. That is why you will see most players try and get to their preferred side
@mnisselle
@mnisselle 3 года назад
@@thebob3712 if you’re buddy franklin, you can get away with being super dominant on one side because your dominant side is that good. You know what else you guys are missing from AFL. The team songs. Yep. Every team has it's own song and as the league was founded in 1896 some of the songs are just brilliant. They've all got an upbeat pacey brass sound and they play the winning team song at the end of every match. My team the Sydney Swans has a banjo solo halfway through.

The scores are pretty simple Collingwood 20 10 130 Carlton 18 12 120 The first numbers 20 and 18 are how many goals each team has gotten in the game, The second numbers 10 and 12 are how many behinds each team has gotten in the game, The last numbers 130 and 120 are what the final score is, And remember a goal is worth 6 points and a behind is worth 1 point. Hope this helped❤️ Btw Collingwood is the team I barrack for❤️❤️

AFL was originated from the Traditional owners off the land indigenous people. They use to play a game called "Marngrook" that included kicking and catching (Marking) the ball. The guy who invented AFL apparently used to spend time with the Local Aboriginals who use to play the game Marngrook that's where the word "Mark" Originates from The game Marngrook used to be shortin to "Mark" which was what had to be done in the game 🙂

For those of you having difficulties with the Score Lines. The first number is Goals - 6points each and the second is Behinds - 1 point each so 20 10 130 is (20x6)+10=130 or 20 Goals and 10 Behinds for a final score of 130 points total. Just multiply the first number by 6 and add the second to get the 3rd

So if it hasnt been explained, This is how the scoring works (according to the example given in the video) Collingwood - 20 10 130 The 20 represents the goals (which is worth 6 points)... so 20 x 6 = 120 The 10 represents the points (which is worth 1 point) so 1 X 10 = 10 Add them both together and 120 + 10 = 130 (total Score) Repeat the process for Carlton's score. Hope that helps :)

There is no separate offensive and defensive team; depending on which way your team is kicking, the opposing side will be either attacking or defending and each player will play both roles according to the direction of play. They shouldn't bother watching any game of the Dockers, they are the biggest losers in AFL! Been around since 1994 and never won a grand final, the WCE were around since 1986 and won their first GF in 1992! Shows where in W.A the good teams are, Yuppie hipsters (Freo) suck at the game and the blue collar hard workers (SoR of Perth) are the West Coast Eagles. I had a few school mates in the WCE, Philip Matera, knew his older brothers Peter and Wally back in the day, a Bairstow. I also had a few cousins playing up until 2 years ago...lol

Is the narrator an Aussie putting on an American accent or a Yank putting on an Australian accent? Fun fact: AFL is the very first *FOOTBALL* game in the world that had nationally agreed rules, it beat SOCCER by several years, as SOCCER still had different rules throughout England before they eventually had rules they all agreed on to create their league. IAFL was also played over the last 65 thousand years by the indigenous first nation people (Aboriginals) in similar forms to today's game but with very basic rules.
