I spent 21 months in Vietnam what bothers me is how we were treated when we came home. we spilled our blood and people treated us like we were the enemy.
You were the enemy. A million Vietnamese slaughtered for absolutely no reason. Their ecosystems destroyed, family bloodlines severed, damage to the dna of the people living there through agent orange. You all did so terrible over there the people you were supposedly protecting constantly left and joined the enemy. And then you’re surprised the warmongering wasn’t met with praise?
How WELL I remember!!! I was in the Air Force at the time myself and can recall one of my friends coming home saying that we were fighting for the wrong side. All war is senseless, but it was made even worse when the men came home and were spat upon by their fellow Americans. After seeing that, I'd never be quite as proud of my country again.🕊
You guys murdered so many people over there. And you’re surprised people thought so much less of you? If you were drafted, I have sympathy for you. If you volunteered, then ouch…you volunteered for a form of genocide.
Our Vietnan Vets got a raw deal by the politician they sold them out in Vietnam, and they sold them out back here in America the returning Vietnam Vets took the blunt of the anger felt by the folks back here in America over the handling of our Vietnam policy that divided this country of ours over what is patriotism. David Hoffman this film clip shows how divided this country was over our handling of our Vietnam policy.
I love this video, thank you for uploading this. I am extremely anti-war, no matter which side is winning or losing. The thing that will always bother me is the government fighting comfortably from their air-conditioned rooms in their snug chairs while willingly sacrificing tens of thousands of lives out on the battlefield and casting grief on thousands of families. It is disgusting, I can't fathom the concept of war.
The mothers interview is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Thank you for sharing these clips!!! I’ve deep dived into reading articles and interviews that were had during the Vietnam war but it’s surreal to see the talks and debates in live action as the events are taking place. I appreciate you!
Thank you Anastasia for your comment. If your resources allow, I would sure appreciate your using the THANKS button under any of my videos including the one you have commented on. It is something new that RU-vid is beta testing and would mean a great deal for my continuing efforts. David Hoffman filmmaker
The mother in this film clip who lost her son during the Vietnam conflict reminded me of this song by Jan Howard, "My Son" 1968, in October 1968, Jimmy her son was killed in action. My son my son I pray that you'll come home to me my son my son It seems only yesterday the most important thing on your mind Was whether you'd make the baseball team or get the new school jacket Like all the other kids had And I remember how your eyes lighted up when you got your first rod and reel For that big fishing trip just you and your dad And I remember wiping the tears away when you hurt yourself on your sled In those days it seems the house was filled with laughter and joy Filled with your friends and they were all such good boys And then came the day that you walked down the aisle To receive that all important diploma I was so proud but I couldn't believe that tall young man was my son my wonderful son And then I remember the little girl that was always around kinda tagging after you She's not so little anymore but she's still around who knows maybe someday Then you received the call that I guess we knew would come someday But it came so quick and now you're so very far away In the land that until a short time ago I didn't even know was there I know the time will pass you'll be home again But until that time my darling take care take special care My son my son I pray that you'll come home to me my son my son
Good debate. I remember these arguments. The spread of communism was dramatic at that time. We now can guess that the Soviet centrally planned economy stopped growing in late 60s. Then came the long decline that ended the Soviet union.
The first time I saw my mother cry was when she got the news that my cousin Dwight had been killed over there. He was just a kid, around 18 years old, just trying to find his way in the world. So many young lives taken needlessly by that terrible war. So many powerful men in government lying to the country, and sometimes to themselves, about what was actually going on in Vietnam, and what they were doing in our name.
Debate on Vietnam war to see what people think, Charlottesville Virginia. Thanks for sharing, David Hoffman film maker 🎥🎞️🙂 Were on the eve of destruction.
I'm an only child of a Vietnam Vet and Marine. Dad passed January 2nd. In many ways, Vietnam ruined his life, and in many ways it ruined my childhood and mom's marriage to him (even though they stayed married through ups and downs for nearly 51 years). In other ways it simply defined everything, so thinking of it in "good" or "bad" terms seemed, and seems, pointless--like wondering if you could completely change the view in the mirror. I'm damned near 50 and it's still the single most significant effect on MY life, and always will be. Growing up, people didn't seem to ever understand our situation, or even care (or even actively insisted nothing was or could be wrong). Now I sometimes think they do understand, but I suspect most of the time I'm just hopeful that someone "gets it". Not that it matters now...and it probably wouldn't have mattered then, either. Dad got a disability rating of 100% in 1996 for PTSD. I was 22 and my childhood was over by then. Vietnam was always the gift that kept on giving for us.
What else could she do even if the country wasn’t doing it for the right reasons may be in her mind and her son’s mind they were doing what their country ask them to do. Unaware of the bogus reason we were over there
South Korea is the one example that gives anyone any ammunition to continue defending the Vietnam War…however, we lost Vietnam anyway and Vietnam is what it is which is a democracy.
Excellent collection of perspectives. Sensitive concerns; dominant opinions; emerging personal opinions. I was against the war and thought the world would come to an end in my lifetime. Make love, not war. I didn’t want to hurt anyone and I just wanted to live life enjoy the beautiful world. Sigh. Still makes me sad. I turned 18 in 1969, but as I female, the threat was different.
*After nearly fifty years since this particular war officially ended, is the answer not* *resoundingly clear? Or is the answer still 'blowin' in the wind?*
Money and population adjustment. Budgets for 1970 were already out in early 1969. Half of the Vets never even got their pensions etc because the building of records mysteriously burned down in 1973 because the US couldn't payout.
I’m not a warmonger but the first guy asking questions was correct. His response when ask to elaborate about what should be done in Vietnam was spot on! Robert McNamara and the politics used to determine targets In Vietnam were disastrous! The Johnson administration was worried about China Instead of defeating the Viet Cong.
American conservatism (displayed here 50+ years ago & present to this day) does a good job navigating this field. On one hand saying the government should send you to war as they see fit rather than as you do, but once you are older, the government should stay out of your life. Perhaps even not having to pay your fair share once you attain certain levels of wealth.
The first debate bit…the young guy has it wrong. The entire “search and destroy” strategy was built by westmoreland and his team. He was given all the fighting force he wanted and was in charge for four years. His strategy was based on flawed assumption that NVA/VC could be worn down and attritted and they would fold. Kept doubling down as other officers saw the plan was not working. The NVA and VC would have fought forever, on their own land. True dat Johnson picking bombing targets in White House basement didn’t help, but the Search and Destroy strategy for prosecuting the war was flawed from very beginning. Creighton Abrams took over spring 1968 and never asked for a single additional soldier, and finally got around to trying to build up south Vietnamese capabilities - which Westie never did.
That's what happens when you mass murder and rape foreign civilians, no respect! We know the gov has tried to cover it up but the truth will always prevail
Millions in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia and the US is still racking up the numbers here since and average of one person a week is killed or maimed by unexploded ordinates in Laos and Cambodia. The US also opposed those who opposed Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge which helped pave the way for the genocide of millions more here in Cambodia.
lol. Wut? Putin will literally invade NATO Baltic countries like Latvia and Estonia if we let Russia take Ukraine. Do you even follow international politics? Americans would be forced to fight against Russia if we let Russia take Ukraine thanks to the NATO security agreement.
I know draft dogers that went and lived in Canada during Vietnam. My question to these people are what do you believe in? You don't believe in serving your country or stopping the spread of Communism. So what do you think is noble and worth fighting for? There are only a few ways to serve your country honorably and these people had a problem with one, major one. So what war would be worth fighting for? An invasion of the US? No, if the US ever got invaded, that means we showed weakeness and we're too late. If one of our allies got invaded? It's a slippery slope. You've got to start somewhere. Vietnam was a just war. They were a poor, peasent country that couldn't defend themselves, and we needed to stop the spread of Communism and it's effect on the world order. Where would these people be if the country needed them? Canada? We need to grow up.
This war was only to fill Johnson's pockets and enrich the military industrial complex, nothing more, nothing less, you call my lai and agent orange just? How fighting for the problems of other countries is serving your country?????
