ANOTHER Aussie icon has fallen, with the humble Esky being bought by Americans.
A division of US firm Coleman Company has bought the cooler from Nylex Ltd, which is in receivership, for an undisclosed sum.
Coleman Company, an international seller of outdoor equipment, has divisions in Australia, Europe, Canada and Venezuela and plans to take the Esky, which has been in Australia for 57 years, global.
Coleman Asia Pacific president Simon Traynor said he would be taking the Esky, which is sold only in Australia and New Zealand, to Asia.
"I've had conversations with my Japanese counterparts and we will be presenting the Esky brand and the range at the end of the month to a number of customers across Asia," he said.
Mr Traynor said there were several links between Esky and Coleman, which sells stoves, coolers, tents, airbeds, backpacks and grills.
"Twenty years ago there was a licensing agreement between Coleman and Esky that not only meant the Nylex factory manufactured Coleman coolers but that the Coleman sales team sold the Esky brand into camping stores,"' he said.
Mr Traynor said the company was "very excited these two iconic brands are back together".
The Kansas-based company hopes to take the Esky brand to South Africa, North America and Europe in the longer term.
The sale will be completed on July 19.
The humble Esky is the latest in a long line of innovative Australian brands and products that overseas raiders have grabbed.
Other famous brands now owned by overseas companies include Vegemite, Arnott's biscuits, the Hills Hoist, Four 'n' Twenty pies, Minties, Rosella soup and even the drovers' overcoat Driz-A-Bone.
