The main thing to remember..... MRE's main purpose isn't to be Gourmet eats, it's intended to put food in your gut and give you sustenance and energy to be able to keep fueled and fighting.

28:05 guys, a biriyani is a traditional Indian/Persian dish which is slow cooked and features layers of ingredients and rice cooked together and can be baked at the end to give a bit more of a dry consistency. Extremely delicious if done well, something everyone's Mum has a slightly different recipe for and overall one of my absolutefavourite things to eat and I'm as Northern European as they come. Not usually good in restaurants as thry try to Anglify/Americanise it but if a friend's Mum is making it and you get invited over then you're in for a real treat, it'll have been cooki g all day and, just the smell alone... Ambrosia.

There are a couple of restaurants near me that do good biriyani, but I live in an area with high immigration from India (also China & Philippines) so there's probably more pressure to do it well.

When I was in the RAF back in 88-92, I lived on a USAF Base and my wife worked in the Chow Hall. They used to sell MRE's for $1 each so she used to buy a bunch and I'd take them on exercise in case I didn't like the stuff we got. Thankfully, on most of exercises we had a field kitche so we'd get a proper full English breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper would normally be stuff like sausages, burgers, meat pie etc with chips and beans/peas and they'd even do a supper around midnight for those working through the night.

This is one of the funniest videos you've done. Side note, my brother was in the Australian military for 23 years. I've always loved camping in the Aussie bush, and when my brother came out of service I suggested we go on an extended cramping trip in the Outback. "Bugger off", was the response I got. "I've done enough camping in service to last me 3 lifetimes".

I remember many years ago when back home in England when the British forces moved from ration packs to the MRE style that they have now the defense minister that the uk had at the time after trying the MRE style meals he said that MRE stood for meals rejected by Ethiopia

During my reserve service I worked with a US liaison officer, an armor and ranger trained LTC. He referred to the MREs of the time as “Meals Rejected by Ethiopians”! This was about 15 years ago. UK “rat packs” have changed quite a few times over the years, from can based storage to dehydrated blocks and now pouches. We were given experimental chocolate (Mars bars) designed not to melt in the Indonesian jungle - but given them in winter in Brecon. We had to saw them apart and lick the dust - it was impossible to bite them!

Gunny Brian brought the SME! The oat blocks were my favourite. I used to soak them in hot water for a sweet porridge type thing. Great way to start the day. And most of the hot food was OK with seasoning and Tabasco 😊. I can’t believe they’ve removed the choccie bars…it was the best bit! Yorkie bars branded as “not for civvies”…always made me chuckle, even when cold wet and feeling a bit miserable 😂. I remember the tinned ‘Rat Packs’ from my early days in the RAF. HORRIBLE mostly. They had such a stock that when the new rations arrived we were fed the old rations in the mess to get rid of them. I remember seeing cans with dates in the 60s and 70s being used…amazed I’m still really😂.

This was an absolutely fascinating video. Having Brian there to add his military take on the video was an inspired idea and I think we need more Brian. Perhaps on a live chat? My oldest son was in the Air Training Corps and did camp out. On these camps he did try MREs, some he liked, others he said were ok and others were not enjoyed. Natasha, and Debbie, you have hit this video for six (that’s a cricketing term), or as you Yanks say “out of the ballpark”. Sgt Brian is a great addition to the team, and it’s a great idea to have his take on the military videos you guys do. As for Australian army ration packs, you say sweetened condensed milk to almost any Australian soldier, and watch his reaction, it will near be ecstasy, one small tube of that was like gold, you never put in anything, you just squeezed it straight out of the tube into your mouth, glorious! I left the army many moons ago, but the one thing that is a constant is there is a tube of sweetened condensed milk in the fridge. A great video girls, and from a Royal Australian Artillery Gun Sgt, to Sgt Brian, thank you for your service 🇺🇸🇦🇺

When I was in the British military. The ration packs were still in tins. I was a cook in the Royal Air Force and the most popular things in the 10 man packs were the tinned sausages and the tinned steak puddings x

If you can find Scots Porridge Oats.a serving is 3 quarter cup of oats to 1and one half of cold water. Pinch of salt and heat until thickened in microwave. 1minute at time stirring each time. It will easily keep you going for a number of hours. You can serve it plain (as in Scotland), with milk and sugar or with fruit. Absolutely gorgeous any way you serve it - and very economical!!!

We used to go camping at Easter and it could often snow - best meal of the weekend was "all in stew". Any food left so like a tin of soup - some beans - a tin of sweetcorn - some peas and a tin or steak in gravy for example was chucked in a pan and heated up and had with any left over bread .......... THE BEST MEAL of the camp !!!

M.R.E used to mean: Meals Rejected (by) Ethiopians. That was back in the 70's-80's so there must have been an improvement to them. Greeting from Down Under.

I will say that the steak one from the UK Ration Pack was likely a type of stew seeing as how it came with dumplings. Traditional UK dumplings (also known as dough buoys in the part of Scotland I grew up in) are nothing like the types of dumplings found in other countries. Theses are balls of flour, suet and water that can have herbs and seasonings added and are generally cooked in a stew, though sometimes baked in an oven but even those that are cooked in a stew are sometimes placed under the grill (broiler) to brown the top once cooked. They are delicious balls of pure stodge. But I do think that if the steak had been heated up, the colour would have been darker (due to the fat melting back into the gravy) and more appetising looking.

thank you for your service Brian and to all those that served all over the world, i had the honour to nurse veterans from WW2, RAF, Army, Royal Navy, Royal Marines in a nursing home opened in WW1,to nurse veterans from WW1, it still nurses veterans from the RUC, UDR and others that served in our conflict

British rations have changed a lot since I was in the army. I don't what they're called now but they used to be called compo (short for composite ration) and when I first joined the army way back in 1987 a lot of the meals came in small tins and a tin opener was issued as part of the kit, in the 90's they replaced the tins with boil in the bag pouches and were known for a while as arctic rations but essentially stayed the same. There was also no vegetarian option. Depending on which menu you had breakfast could be bacon and beans, sausage and beans or corned beef hash, all menus had porridge oats. Evening meals could be beef stew and dumplings, chicken supreme with rice, burgers with beans and some others that I can't remember, for desert there was rice pudding, mixed fruit cake or fruit dumplings and most menus came with dried apple flakes. There wasn't a meal for lunch but there was high calorie snacks such as chocolate, boiled sweets and glucose tablets. There was also a sundries pouch which contained a small packet of chewing gum a sachet of powdered soup, fruit drink powder (orange or lemon) also a small tin of chicken pate with a ring pull lid and 2 packets of hardtack biscuits that was a substitute for bread and a packet of fruit biscuits (nicknamed the combat garibaldi) as well as tea bags, coffee powder, whitener (aka powdered milk) sugar, regular matches and windproof matches and sterilising tablets. I'm glad they still have the oatmeal block, I love oatmeal blocks. They didn't have a self heating bag so they also came with a hexamine burner.

I remember having the Tinned version of British MRE (Commonly called a Rat Pack) between the 70's and 90's. For breakfast we would use the oatmeal biscuits and milk powder and add hot water to make porridge, sachets of jam also got added for a fruity version. We carried bottles of Tabasco and Worcestershire Sauce and curry powder to make the Rats at least palatable. If we were pushed for time, we would gather all the hot meals and cook them all in one mess tin, That led to such delicacies as Beef stew with dumplings and chicken casserole all m,mixed together with lashings of curry sauce to kill the taste. I love the memories this video has stirred :) Thanks Ladies :)

The UK military used to have "biscuits brown" which as the name suggests were biscuits which were brown. They were renowned for stopping you up for up to a week if you overindulged.

There's a great spoof RU-vid video, from (I think) the 1990s, made by a Royal Marine Training Team, revealing the contents of an "Officer's 24hr Ration Pack". From the box, on the table, the NCO pulls out silver cutlery, linen napkins, silver candelabra & candles, a bottle of Claret, a bottle of Port and on it goes, all with a straight face - very, very funny!

There are a number of videos out there that feature soldiers from different countries, comparing their own ration packs to that of other nations. Some really interesting comparisons.

I did 32yrs in the Royal marines I joined the boys army at 16 and the marines @ 18 just retired the MRE's are very good now but back in the 90's they were terrible 99% of British soldiers hate it when someone says to them thank you for your service,I think it's an American thing

Please bring Brian along for some reaction videos of Royal Marines. My son is an active RM Commando, recently returned from California USMC mountain warfare center. From time to time some US Marines come across to the UK for a few months to take the All Arms Commando Course and earn the green beret. With his rank and length of service, Brian will undoubtedly have worked alongside our British RM units.

"beverage whitener" is what it says on the tin, a 'whitener' for your beverages. ie: coffee and tea. So powdered milk basically.

from my time in the British Army. MREs only came in towards the end of my service. The best mix. Was the hot chocolate powder mixed with the rolled oats( porridge)

Hi you two 👋 serving British squaddie here - if we deploy on exercise/operations each man would carry a complete 24 hrs pack split down so it will fit into our packs/webbing, although we may also have an extra 1 or 2 depending on how long it is between resupplies. Brian is right though 😂 food is food, especially if you've been put for a few days or more - at that point people just want something hot and filling

Improved a lot since the 1980s. Most guys took curry powder. I remember some scoff we made in the car park of a German military police barracks (don’t ask). Took bacon burgers (breakfast), beef stew, apple flakes and rice pudding mixed up with loads of curry powder and heated on a hexamine burner. Magic.

I remember (long, long ago) the UK MRE's used to contain a foil pack entittled "Biscuit, Brown". One of the main functions of these was not particularly to provide nutrition, as much as to (ahem) save you having to go for a walk with your entrenching tool... most squaddies I remember used to keep a couple of packs in their bergen in case of developing the squits whilst on manouvers. Think they were Dark Digestive biscuits, with Arrowroot baked in there - but damn they were effective. Faith may move mountains, but it couldn't move me after a pack of those damned things.

Oh girls. Another very entertaining show. Just love the way you put things over and the topics you cover in the UK. Thanks to you among others, hopefully those that de cry the UK, especially , well won't go into that now....I really hope when you pop over this year you come to my neck of the woods for a visit. Might do 2 types of porridge for you. But can do something which might be slightly different, a traditional Brit dish. David...... Not enough tea bags in the compo rations. Hence most, especially soldiers would take there own tea for a brew. Thanks girls, you are both such a wonder

Until recently flameless heaters weren't a thing in UK ration packs, the troops were issued with hexamine blocks in a little metal stand which could be used to heat water to heat the rations. Or you'd use a boiling vessel in a vehicle to boil water to heat the rations. Boiling water is of course also integral to tea, which is what keeps the British military working.

When I did my time in the UK forces (late 60s,70s,80s) the rations included sausages that were to die for. I enjoyed them so much that I used to get some and take them home as the wife liked them as well. It wasn't long before she noticed when they were made ............ 1947 ............ needless to say she stopped eating them but I still loved them. Anyone from that time and from the UK forces who are reading this will remember eating 'Babies Head'.................?????

Porridge is similar to oatmeal. In the old ration packs you also got chocolate drink powder and apple flakes. Mix all three together food of the gods.
