Awww Mikey. What a lovely surprise to see your Dad? He’s cool! 👍😎 I hope he knows how much we all love his beautiful, kind, caring & compassionate son. Luv ya Mikey darling! 👍❤️🇦🇺
Thanks Mike, for sharing your 'Dad time' with us. He seems like a top bloke, and he has great taste just like you. Your pies looked awesome, I'm sure they were yummy. ❤
If your dad likes coconut get him onto lamingtons or the Bounty bar which is dessicated coconut covered in milk chocolate. Really good. Also cherry ripe bars.
It should be said that while it’s good practice to have a very small amount of Vegemite if you’re a beginner, many of us Aussies would have 10 times that amount which is why it comes in large jars 😂 I like to pack it on pretty thick! This video was loads of fun Mikey and great to meet your Dad. Cudos to him for liking the musk sticks too!! ❤
Bit more Vegemite, and there's a bit of an art to dabbing it and partially mixing it with the butter, comes natural to Australians. But each to their own, and I know Australians have different preferences, and this is your preference, Mike.
Mike a little bit of Vegemite trivia for you it was invented in Melbourne in 1923 by a chemist called CP Callister. He came up with it after being asked by a food manufacturer Fred Walker to find something similar to the English Marmite spread and Vegemite was the result. The best place to get a meat pie is from a bakery where they are freshly baked rather than from a Servo where they are delivered then reheated, I like lots of different meat pie varieties but my favourites are probably either pepper steak or curry. Over the ditch they also have great meat pies but I reckon they excel with their Whitakers brand chocolates I buy them all the time.. Halloween isnt a big thing here although its being pushed hard by the big retailers who are trying to boost their sales. It seems to be getting more popular with the younger generation older people like me just think its a pain in the butt when people you dont know come knocking on your door,. Thanks for sharing your dads first time experiencing Aus/NZ food.
Glad you love our Chocolate! ❤️ Thanks for clarifying that Whitakkers is from New Zealand. Some houses may give out the smaller mini ones that come in a 12 pack on Halloween (personally I can't afford it). The one time I went trick or treating as a kid where I grew up in Tauranga that halloween wasn't celebrated as much and there was 2 houses we got stuff from in the whole suburb, haha. And 1 was an apple because it turned out that one of the houses we knocked on was our school cooking teacher and they wanted to give us something healthy. Haha. 🤣 I think halloween is more popularly these days and potentially there may be more trick or treaters these days but I live in the a house behind another house so never get knocks on the door. Would have loved to get Whittakers chocolate as a kid. The peanut butter Whittakers chocolate is one of my favs though, I always try the Whittakers chocolate flavours my parents have in their fridge when I travel to see them. They always have some. 😊 P. S. If you ever try Lamingtons or Pavalova just say you are trying Aussie/NZ food to avoid controversy in the comment section. Our countries haven't agreed apon who invented what. 🤣
Yeah Mike, Halloween is celebrated here by a few and some Trick or Treating. Good to see your dad getting in on the action. The ones for me are the meat pie with tomato sauce and of course vegemite on toast.
Hi Mike, I’m impressed with your pie… well done. It’s too much work to make at home, I get my pies from a local bakery. I’m also hearing there are a few Aussie cafes in the US serving meat pies… you should seek them out to try.
Halloween is getting more popular in Australia. It's really only been the last 10 years or so that it's really started to take off. Trick or treating isn't a big thing here.
Servos are Gas Stations which here are called Service Stations. Of course we shorten everything, so of course they are called “Servo’s” yes and we called sweets “Lollies”
I am from New Zealand, and I am pretty sure that Whitakers brand chocolate is a New Zealand brand. However, we have Marmite that came out of the, I think, 1st world war following the British Marmite, it was then later that Australia copied and ended up with Vegemite. Personally, I believe that Vegemite is sweeter than our Marmite, But I so glad that you used very little on the bread. It makes me cringe when I see people using huge amounts of it and expect them to like it. In saying that there is "me" who can eat Marmite/Vegemite by the spoonful. The amount that you put on that slice of bread I would times that by 4 at least. I am someone that can put a spoon in the jar scoop out big spoons of it and just eat it like that. The other thing that I enjoy with it is cheese. As kids we used to make "Mouse traps" Basically toast one side of the bread in the oven, take out turn over and cover with Marmite/Vegemite sprinkle with grated cheese and put back in the until the cheese is melted and golden and bread is toasted then cut into thirds and let cool. They will last for days sometimes a good couple of weeks in a tin.
I live in Victoria Australia and I don’t get many Halloween trick or treaters, but I’ve had a few. My young grandchildren have been heavily into Halloween for a good 5 or more years with school friends and locals. I don’t see others often, but at a few primary schools, the children all get dressed up. It’s a slow growing thing in some places here in some parts of Australia . I googled it lol * Halloween is an observance that is becoming a growing trend in Australia. Some businesses and organizations coordinate Halloween-themed gatherings for staff and clients to interact with each other. Charity organizations may have fundraising activities that center on the Halloween theme. Halloween is not a nationwide public holiday in Australia. Retail businesses selling or renting out costumes and other Halloween-themed items may be particularly busy prior to and on Halloween.
English marmite couldn’t be imported to australia because of the wars and so we invented Vegemite so that australia didn’t have to go without. I prefer Vegemite to marmite any day of the week thanks lol
Hello Mike! I watched your reaction video to Charles and Eddie "Would I lie to you" and then stumbled on this video. Nice to see you with your dad. Was wondering because I am new here, but what is the connection with everything Australia? I heard you are in California so is there an area where you live that has a lot of Australians? Have you visitied the land down under and fell in love with it? I am so intrigued. Thanks for spreading some Australian love :)
MIKEY TRY v on toast with grilled cheese or tasty cheese and v sandwich, or v on toast with a poached egg on top, or v toast with sliced tomato. so many more yummy ways with v. btw its not vegemite , its vaginamite!
If the pie meat or gravy dribbles down your chin - you are an Aussie. If you burn your tongue on them - you get citizenship LOL. I used to go to lectures after work & lived on pies to eat on the train to ear for dinner before college classes. Working full time I went 5 nights a week so needed a cheap hot meal so I hit the local bakery to get a different pie every night. As a poor younger worker I needed to stretch my $$$$.
The dogs eye and a dead horse every street corner and servos bakerys anywhere anytime England has Marmite similar yeah they trick or treat and yes can get anything
12 out of ten. Would smash a couple of them in one go. Would definitely eat. Channeling my “ Chefs Reaction “ vibes here. I’ll go miles for a good homemade pie mate.
don't buy them from a servo and don't make them at home ...only get them from a bakery or supermarket but get the more expensive ones at the supermarket .
Fancy living in a country that doesn't have pies! 😄 Don't forget, it's tomato sauce, not ketchup. They look great Mike. I love a pie. Musk sticks are very divisive. I personally love them. I don't eat Vegemite all the time, but when I want it, nothing else will do. You did the right thing having just a smear. But white bread is the way to go. Vegemite is very Australian.. The Poms have Marmite, which is nowhere near as good. In fact, I'm off to make some toast and have some Vegemite right now. We don't really do Trick or Tread, but sadly, it's becoming more popular. Cheers Mike and Mike's Dad
I remember watch a video a year or so ago about an Australian bakery called Banksia in um Kansas city 🤔? USA, where an Aussie made our Aussie pies and it was also a bakery of our cakes.
We don't really do halloween in Australia. A few people do participate but they are in very small numbers. Vegemite is eaten very much to taste. My hubby likes it thick were I prefer very thinly spread. You need to try Milo.......the way aussies make it !
Vegemite: Aussie kids are brought up on it. Smeared, quite thickly on rusks for baby to suck, on toast, sandwiches, I even like it on homemade picklets with butter. Eaten by many Aussies every single day and others less often.
The world's bravest man might just be the one who looked into the depths of a drained brewer's yeast vat and thought, "I should cook that black goo and see how it tastes."
Bypass the servos and go straight to the local bakery. They'll have the best hot pies and sausage rolls. You can also grab a lamington too or custard tart or vanilla slice.
Baked your own pies mate😊 what an absolute legendary effort. I liked your dad's reaction to Vegemite as you spread it perfectly. It's definitely an acquired taste if you have not had it before. A lot of Aussies started eating it when we were little kids so it's just part of our pantry . It can be eaten anytime of the day but I love it with a good espresso coffee in the morning as it's a nice light breaky (breakfast) . It sits well on my stomach. Aussies tend to be coffee snobs . Good quality espresso shops are on every other street corner in Australia and also often serve really good quality tasty health food. As a tradie( tradesman) I often just grab a cappuccino at the servo (service station or what you'd call a gas station) Warm greetings from the sunny state of Queensland to you and your dad Mate 😊
Hi Mikey!! Hi Dad!! Those pies look AMAZING!! Ridgey Didge!! And Fountain!! The real deal.. 2 bites in I could tell they were GOOOOD!!! Side on, they look perfect inside, perfect consistency/meat to gravy ratio!! A pie is never really a special occasion!! Just good for a luch at the worksite etc.. The casing is the secret, u can pre/blind bake them a bit before you feel them. Marmite is the UK version, then Vegemite is the Oz/stronger version. Gigantic source of Vitamin B.. thats how all kids in Oz get their Vit B!! Made from leftover brewers' yeast extract with various vegetable and spice additives. Halloween isnt huge here, but getting bigger.. Funny as its actually a Scottish Pagan Festival!!
fellow aussie here :) vegemite is great - so many awesome ways to enjoy it, grilled cheese on toast with vegemite is great too, my fav is vegemite on toast with a runny poached egg on top and a small amount of freshly cracked pepper :)
Trick or Treat is not common here, some do it, but it would be a real score to get a Whittaker's chocolate in a Trick or Treat, never heard of anyone being that lucky, usually if your feeling generous you'd give the kids a few bars from a Cadbury favourites box or some Freddo Frogs
As a person who worked in a Pie Shop turn the pie upside down as the lid top of the pie is stronger. We have Pie Shops in many of our Towns...enjoy 😊🥧🥧🥧
Most bakery bought pies would hold together a bit longer than yours. But it's pretty standard that you would end up with some of the pie in your lap. 😂
8:08 Morning on your toast. Steak marinade, some people put a teaspoon is a cup of hot water for a drink. It all depends on your level as to how you use it. The salt in it is like soy sauce or fish sauce when you put it into cooking. That is the reason for the big jar. The more you learn how to use it the more you will use and it also lasts forever.
Oh you and your dad should open a meat pie shop in America. Just ask an Aussie baker to come over and teach you how they are made here. Although I have to admit that yours looked amazing.
