In this food travel vlog, my dad, Trang, and I try some chả cá prepared Hanoi style. We eat this delicious traditional Vietnamese dish at a restaurant that has been serving it for over 150 years!
The exact location of the restaurant is:
14 P. Chả Cá
Hàng Bồ, Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội
The dish consisted of pieces of cat fish pan fried to sizzling goodness at the table served alongside rice noodles and herbs. We ate this delicious dish and gave you a signature Dank Rank Food Review.
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoyed this food travel vlog.

Your Dad is such a stud. He also has a gift for languages. I heard him say " L'addition, s'il vous plait.' ( The bill, please." ) in French perfectly. His Vietnamese pronunciation is spot on flawless.

When I visited Hanoi, I tried this dish and it was really terrific. I thought the fish and dill combination was very tasty, and I hadn't had anything quite like it before. .

Ca Lang is a kind of Catfish but not exactly the same as the regular Catfish you normally see in the markets . They are bigger and their flesh is tastier and firmer . They live normally in mixed water regions like the Red River Estuary and in some deep lakes in North Vietnam . They are one of the most expensive fishes in VN . The Cha Ca flesh is marinated for many hours ( even overnight ) in Turmeric powder , Galanga extract , sugar , salt and pepper , then lightly grilled before be served in a frying-pan with a bit of oil , fresh dills , onions, shallots then eaten with fried peanuts and Mam Tom or Nuoc Mam Pha . Honestly I am not a big fan of that dish , but my late parents adored it . I highly recommend you to try Banh Tom (shrimp cake), Bun Oc on the West Lake bank , Mien Luon ( eel glass noodle served dry and in soup ) , Bun Cha + Nem Cua Be (Obama Combo , but not at the same restaurant ) , Bun Thang , Cha Muc , Hanoi style Pho Bo on Ly Quoc Su street and Banh Com or Com Xao , Hoa Qua Dâm for dessert . Bon Appétit mes amis !

Very happy you sought out this dish as all the foreigners that have tried it loved it. Yes, it's more expensive than you typical Viet dish, but the restaurants that serve them are typically nicer than the average street food places. It adds to the experience. I've always seen people go to that really fancy one, so this was a first.

Even the girl - whom I assume is 100% Vietnamese also eats the legendary “chả cá” with fish sauce 😢 guys, for me the “mắm tôm” is like half the soul of this dish

Cá lăng from the North: Hemibagrus (a catfish genus) where as cá Tra/Ba sa: cat fish from the South.

Cha Ca La Vong is always served with a strong Northern style fermented shrimp sauce mixture. That restaurant had to use the Southern style Nuoc Mam Cham with the distinctive "golden" hue with that dish. It would be lie if they called it "authentic".
@TS-JungleMonkey
@TS-JungleMonkey 7 месяцев назад
And where was the "dill" as called for in the "authentic" 150 yo recipe. The dish has been greatly influenced with Southern style. The strong "dill" was a bit of a let down but the fermented mixture adds the umami flavour. It's just an average simple turmeric fried fish dish with a funky sauce and dill.

Hmm, I was in Ha Noi a few years back and had Cha Ca with mam ruoc sauce. It was too strong for me even though I’m Vietnamese. I didn’t like the dill either. I like the cha ca in So Cal a lot more.

Could you please do a video at a Korean restaurant? Here in Canada I meet Vietnamese people all the time who enjoy Korean food. I think it's partly because it is a healthy and flavourful cuisine. It always surprises me because Vietnamese cuisine is not spicy like Korean food tends to be.

Quite expensive for the country really, considering the portions were very small.
@vietdude03
@vietdude03 7 месяцев назад
Dude, that place is definitely scammy at best. I went there in 2018 and due to my hunger, I forgot to ask for the price first, which is the rule I go by when visiting the north. They didn’t give us a menu and just asked us how many portions. There’s probably a reason why no one else was in the restaurant.
@TS-JungleMonkey

Welcome to Northern cultures my friend. I got scammed left right and centre when I was there and I speak Vietnamese :)
@vietdude03
@vietdude03 7 месяцев назад
@@TS-JungleMonkey There are so many reviews about their pricing. The girl (Trang?) even said she told them they only wanted 2 portions at the beginning but the server said they ordered 3 portions. Reading other reviews, they give you the same amount of fish regardless of the of people. Paying 170k per person is ridiculous for Vietnam standards.

I got ripped off in Long Hai and Saigon too. That’s why I prefer to go to Thailand instead. I just want to enjoy myself when traveling, not to constantly look out for thieves and rip off artists.

It's the first and original Cha Ca restaurant ( Cha Ca La Vong ) in Hanoi and in Vietnam , the most expensive but definitely not the best . Here is the history of this restaurant : during the French colonization , the Vietnamese patriots used to hold their secret meetings at that house . The owner of that place ( the Great-grandfather of the current owner ) , himself a revolutionist invented that fish dish to invite his comrades after each meeting. Since everybody loved it , he decided to open a restaurant serving only that speciality and it became famous since then . There is no menu there because they serve only one dish: the famous Cha Ca . If someone asks for the menu , this person is definitely not from Hanoi or North VN . Normally we eat it with Shrimp Paste ( Mam Tom ) but he saw that you are foreigners so he gave you Nuoc Mam Pha which is less smelly and much easier for you to eat. I recognize the guy who served you . He is a bit shy with foreigners because his English is not great . The altar you saw is not dedicated to Buddha but to the owner's ancestors . He actually wants to keep the same old decor of his dining room as it was 150 years ago .
