I talk about safety in Korea often, but I'm continually amazed at how both Koreans and foreigners are able to naturally fall into Korean societal order. How and why is this?! Let me know what you all think!!
I grew up in Gangnam in 80s. It wasn’t always safe. Always got mugged by tugs in the subway stairs and it was so scary to visit Han river park. The city has came a long way. I now live in North America and the major cities in North America is heading the wrong direction.
I visited South Korea for the first time in September of 2024 for 10 days. When I returned home to the Seattle area I was immediately embarrassed to be an American for the first time in my life. Now I walk around my neighborhood and pick up trash at least once a week to help keep me humble, reduce my level of entitlement, and make our world a better place.
I am glad your visit to South Korea gave you a helpful perspective. To quote your words, "reduce my level of entitlement", this is something every American can benefit from. Having lived in the continental US your whole life, you would not know. It is not entirely your fault. Everybody takes it for granted and behaves this way reinforcing the sense of entitlement. However, it is something that every foreigner visiting the U.S. senses immediately. Having lived in South Korea and the US for decades, your assessment is right on point. Last thing I'd add though, there are bad apples anywhere including S. Korea. The U.S. is a great country.
@@JimA1818 I live in Seattle. Seattle has become a victim of clueless, unrealistic and unsustainable radical socialist ideas and politicians with no qualifications to hold their positions. We Americans need to realize how badly we are doing and how the rest of the world is zooming us by. We need to up our games.
I cant believe Seoul is so clean and there's no set of security and police around. Oh isnt it nice to live in a place like that. Why cant other countries learn from them and do the same? Enjoy your life there. If it was me, I'd stay there.
Ugh, wish your channel would explode in popularity. Thanks for seeing Korea in such a positive light, but even that aside, you seem to be such a lovely person inside and out. Wish more people had the pleasure of meeting you on screen!
Do you worry that you might get confused with Johnny Somali? Some Koreans put Korean flag on their backpack not to be confused as Chinese when they travel, not sure what you can do.
I'm trying to keep my schedule of Thursday and Sunday!! The algorithm will pick me up, eventually, but I have a good base already of folks like you who support me! I'm content!:)
Hi, Francois!! Great content and thank you for filming at Nam Dae Moon Market. I used to go there many times a long time ago especially when I first arrived in Korea. It sure brings back many fond memories. So, how does Korea keep their country so safe and orderly? One of my answers is Korea's deeply rooted Confucious culture. As you may know, Confucius was a Chinese philosopher who lived more than two thousand years ago and his teachings had a profound impact on many East Asian cultures. Basically, according to him, Confucianism, emphasizes personal and governmental morality, harmonious social relationships, righteousness, kindness, sincerity, and a ruler's responsibility to lead by virtue!! So, based on his teachings, Korean people were taught not to cause any harm to others and always be respectful to one another from very early on. Second, Korean people are very homogeneous people who share the same cultures and same language which makes it easier to govern. Third, Korean people value their image, integrity, honor, and self-worth at the highest level. Hence, they feel ashamed whenever they are caught doing dishonest acts and worry about losing their face and credibility in the eyes of the public. Credibility is very important in Korea, otherwise you will be alienated and mistrusted from the society! Koreans worry about what others think of them so the last thing they want to do is suffer the loss of respect and be humiliated. I am sure there are many other reasons like CCTV, really strict immigration laws, and law enforcement but I really believe the ones that I mentioned played a crucial role in shaping what Korea is today. Of course, Koreans are humans just like any other people in the world so they lie, cheat, and do many fraudulent acts whenever they get the opportunity, especially behind closed doors. There are quite a few rude jerks everywhere especially when driving. However, what I really like about living in Korea is the public safety and the NO availability and ownership of firearms. If Korea was allowed to have guns like the U.S., I do not think it would be a safe country like it is today. This is the biggest reason why I have been living in Korea for almost twenty years. I have recently visited my home country in the U.S., Atlanta, Ga which I still love but you do not know how dangerous I felt knowing people had guns even carrying them.Gun violence and mass shootings are so rampant in the States now, and it's very nerve-racking to just have little disagreements/arguments with other people knowing any minute they could pull out a gun in a fit of anger and shoot you. It happens literally every day in the States. It's so so scary. Americans can not even have civil conversations with their own fellow neighbors and strangers anymore about some delicate issues without having to worry about getting yelled at or even getting killed!! America was not this dangerous when I was growing up in the 70's and 80's. Anyway, I really don't think I can live in America now after living in a safe gun-free Korea for almost twenty years to be really honest with you. Thanks for reading my long message again and always peace brother!!!
Most Koreans respect the civil order. Most countries speak one language than not. Yes, not everyone in Korea acts right, but most due and that is why Korea is very safe.
What an impressive comment!! I will say Korean's root of living philosophy came from our founding meath called "danging shinwha" which is it's main highlight is ""widely benefiting all humankind( 홍익인간)" mainly rather then confusions culture...

Wow...I just saw the most accurate description of Korea. You have such great insight. We Koreans often behave the same way, even if our personalities and thoughts are different. Since we value personal morality and responsibility, we tend to have good habits and self-discipline. However, we also get stressed over small things and often judge and criticize others. But it’s definitely not because of CCTV that we don’t steal. No one really pays attention to CCTV. What we care about is the judgment of society. Thank you so much for providing such a clear analysis.
So far its holding together but I think its because (mostly) the quality of the people coming in. They get it. Its a different story in Hongdae. Even though Korea needs immigrants they need to very selective and not go the route of European countries.
As more foreigners come to Korea, CRIMES in Korea have increased!!~~So pls stop advertising Korea!✔ ✔"Come to Korea to Pickpocket"--Russian Trio Arrested for Targeting Crowded Subway Passengers--MBC TV ''''A trio of people who stole wallets from passengers on the subway during the busy rush hour were arrested. They were Russians who came to Korea with the intention of committing pickpocketing from the beginning. They stole wallets while riding the subway for 45 hours over 9 days.'''
These foreigners have messed up Itaewon and now they have moved to Hongdae. Hongdae is a place where many foreigners gather and at night, they drink on the streets and the drunk foreigners make a mess of the streets. We need more patrols and strict enforcement of laws like Singapore.
You will appreciate that routine normal things when you travel to places those things are considered premium or only for rich areas. You have to pay high prices to live in such safe areas in US.
Thank you for being a great ambassador to korea. Youve been here long enough so at this point, you're just as much a korean as anyone else haha. Hope your channel grows man.
Seoul is a tourism hotspot due to the Korean Wave. Most foreigners do not really know the extent of Korea's safety until they get there though they may hear about it. I don't think foreigners necessarily know everything about Korean culture, but Korean immigration is very strict, so most are law abiding, at least.
The best way to explain it is (there are cameras everywhere) but besides that if you ever worked in construction and go to a job site (a house or a building under construction) if that job site is always kept clean by the Project Manager or company in charge, then the trades going through there will see that and not make a mess or leave trash, as soon as that site gets messy and material trash is left everywhere, trades will not respect it and just add to the mess, it’s a pretty basic social experiment
There WAS a lot of shanty towns around Seoul. And urban developers (mainly of very suspicious background) drived the poor dwellers out of their home and once 'Moon Villages' (달동네)-Korean slang for shanty towns -changed into the well developed high-rise apartment complexes that foreign tourists see in outer area of Seoul. Conspicuous mass protest of the lower class unpriviledged is almost impossible, because all the subpar people spread and seeped into the cheap dwellings like goshiwons, underground rents, or rooftops. There's poor people in every nook and cranny in the city. It means They rarely have no option for collective action for their right as citizens compared to the past when they gathered in the same area. And mentioned petty crimes can be learned, trained and reinforeced when the kindred people gathered in the same area in my opinion.
It’s the culture. Home education takes essential role which is natural among most of Korean families. However, there are always ones ruining the mood everywhere on this planet.
Uncomfortable truth each race has different avg IQ that's why countries in africa are still poor. S.korea after colonization even more than that experienced war but thrive
In fact, there is a big secret that no one can tell. The reason it is not told is because it is an uncomfortable truth. The secret is that East Asians are a superior race. Not only in Korea, but also in East Asian cultures such as Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, and China, it is similar to Korea. The streets are clean and social order is maintained, even in North Korea. It is not that only Korea has exceptionally clean streets and social order. East Asian countries generally have clean streets and excellent social order. This means that East Asians are superior. Morality, character, philosophy, and culture are all superior compared to other cultures. This is the hidden truth. I have not said anything because it could be misunderstood as racism, but after watching this video repeatedly, I wanted to say it someday.

Good luck.
Koreans teach a class called dodeuk 도덕 in schools till high school. It is ethics class until high school every year every week. It is not just taught at home or just through social context or culture. Lastly, they are taught to be peaceful and helpful.
