AMERICAN HISTORY X (1998) " First Time Watching" Movie Reaction!! This was Mind Blowing!

I went into this film without any expectations and I must say I was truly mind blown. Trying to stay open minded through a film of this magnitude was definitely a challenge because finding a reason to hate someone who truly despises you race is easy. Within the first 10sec of the movie I thought I had come to conclusion of my thoughts of Danny, but as the movie continuing on my perspective of him and character changed. As always I keep my reaction authentic and opinions honest and you will see.

Lamont (the black inmate who befriends Derek) is probably the most important character of that movie. He's not deterred by Derek's demeanor, affiliation or tattoos. He just saw an opportunity to turn someone filled with hate and anger into an actual person again and he acted on that opportunity. And that's where the genius of that character lies, because they don't wave Lamont in your face as some kind savior; but as one of, if not the, most critical catalyst for Derek's change.

I had to fk him up pretty bad or my Taiwanese buddy would have possibly ended up in the hospital. My old “friend” ended up with a broken nose, a bit of dental damage and hopefully a lesson learned and i ended up with a scar on my knuckles I still can see 20 years later and a new lesson learned in the school Of life myself.....He never looked up when I walked by in school again and that was that. Gonna be real with yall. I was racist as shit growing up. It had a lot to do with my upbringing and with guys in school. Got jumped a few times coupled with the wrong friends and I developed into a racist person. I got older, grew up, understood things aren't just black and white, met a good woman, got better friends, and now I regret everything I've said and genuinely feel differently than I did as a kid. Sometimes the racist thoughts people have or say out loud are influenced by circumstance. Never say people can't change. I did. I had a fundamental change of mentality. It's weird trying to put it to words, but it's not the man lying there with the teeth on the curb that's the worst bit. It's Nortons leg. I don't know what he actually stomped on, but that stomp wasn't pulled at all. The other night i was breaking sticks of firewood with my heel so it'd fit the the little stove we've got on the deck. Stomping hard to break them in two. There was less hesitation and greater purpose to Norton. He didn't just intend to kill. He wanted to kill, and he didn't just consider the man worth killing, he hated him so much that what he most wanted in life that moment was killing him. Yeah, he made him bite the curb, but he stomped him out like pest, his life not worth taking his time. Absolute disregard for his humanity. Chilling doesn't begin to describe it.

Excellent reaction n I love your thoughts after the movie!! I actually sat my kids down when they were around the 12-14 year mark n had them watch that movie, cuz I believe it's an excellent way to show people how to try n see things from someone else's perspective, AND it perfectly embodies why you should always and only judge each individual person by their character, n never their color or religion or anything else for that matter... n it's a great teacher in why hatred is so poisonous n how it leads you so far astray, even from your own good... I wanted my kids to have that sense of fairness n right n wrong that I think that movie is so amazing at getting you to see n really take a deep look inside yourself n realize how much everything you do n say can have such powerful impacts on those around you, so you have to be vigilant about the messages you let out into the world cuz you never know how something you said or did could impact another in a way that could lead to tragedy later on, n there's just some shit you can't take back n you can't undo... idk... it seemed to work. I have amazing productive adults for my kids, with huge hearts n a great sense of empathy n kindness, fairness n love for everyone until they give them some kind of reason not to, but I am safe in the knowledge that reason will NEVER involve the color of another person's skin tone... I was not a perfect mom, or even a great one, truth be told... but I know at least I got that part right, instilling this deep core belief in them... n as brutal n heartbreaking as that movie is to see, it made those points so very well... I just think it helps bridge what can tend to be a huge divide, when taken in the context in which it's meant... but anyways, just wanted to say I appreciate this video n you taking the time to watch it n to give such great dialog about it afterward! Much love!

This movie should be a requirement in every high school! Shit, every junior high!? That principal is what every school teacher, counselor, everyone should be like. To actually care about these kids! Ed Norton is incredible in this movie. His eyes after the curb scene are so intense, he is amazing. Probably the hottest he's ever looked too, minus the swastika on his chest though.

I saw this is history class as well. Although some students thought the racist adaptation of the battle hymn of the republic was cool to sing. So there is that, I think the message got lost

I'm glad they are showing this movie. Very surprised! I graduated in 99, I'll be freaking 40 this month. Seeing how offended the country is these days I'm shocked they would play this.

I graduated in ‘04. I doubt they could show it today. There would have to be parent consent forms, trigger warnings, and a whole lot of hurdles to see a movie. Back then the teacher just said “we’re going to watch this”

the director orginally had the ending end with him shaving his head in a rage but ed norton refused

I remembered learning about this years ago and I'm glad they didn't do it. While the original ending would've been more symbolic of hate being cyclical and unending, it would've taken away too much from the experience Derek had in prison as well as the flashback showing how the father was responsible for passing that hate/racism to his son.

Man, that would have negated the entire message of the film. What a tone deaf director.

@@johnnyjohnny6174 - I don't know... the whole movie was a commentary on how racist opinions propagate and fester. But it's also about why they persist. His father being murdered by a black man caused a lot of his hatred. Showing his brother being killed at the end, and him being pulled back into the same tribal circle of hate would have also been a powerful commentary. I do think this ending is better as it leaves it open for the viewer to fill in their own ending... would Derek overcome the death of his little brother, or get pulled back into the same cycle?

Derek saying "What have *I* done" at the end shows how he's truly accepted the repercussions of his own actions, though. Powerful line; the "intended" ending would've fucked it all up.

The principal of this movie is the real hero to me. Imagine if teachers/principals took out the time to help troubled youth like that before they get worse into adulthood. So many kids could be saved if people would actually put in the time and effort like this

Absolutely agree. The role was played wonderfully, and the character itself is the definition of a hero. Maybe I'm biased since my wife is a teacher, but he CARED. He knew he could help for the better, and he did.

Yes, when someone else care's about your welfare it can make all the difference, especially when you're still growing up. 'Racism' is a disease that only one particular ethnicity, (compared to any other), that "carries" & "spreads" it's self quite rapidly! There is only a small chance of any 'treatment' helping the ill brain of a "racist" once it has fully grown. The best "treatment" for the racist dis-eased is to discover them while they're still real young & educate them in an unbiased way through honesty before it's too late.

There’s too much wilful rejection of the system under the banner of entitlement to personal freedom. Kids just have no interest in being told anything. The culture itself is poisoning them, thus reaching out to kids is impossible as they’ll bite that hand that tries to feed them.
