American Iron Bagger Shootout

The Harley-Davidson Road King, Indian Springfield and Victory Gunner we had on our trip through the Midwest played perfectly in this environment, a threesome of American-developed and manufactured steeds with big V-Twin engines and loping cadences in a traditional cruiser profile. Saddlebags and cop-style plexiglass windshields accommodated comfort and stowage during four long days on the road.

I have a 2017 Springfield and absolutely adore it. I’ve put 20k miles on in 18 months, including a 3900 mile trip last year from Florida to New Hampshire and back. The bike is a dream.

I can't agree on those comments. I test rode an Indian Springfield just yesterday and it felt super smooth, very confident, predictable, and it felt much lighter than it actually was. I'm 5'6" 145 pounds, so some of those bigger bikes have me up on my toes and can be a bit of a handful at stops, but I had no trouble at all flat-footing the Springfield and never once even began to feel like it was too big for me at slow speeds, stops, on the highway, or anywhere. The Indian wins for me hands-down and Harley isn't even in the game for me anymore.

Not sure I fully agree about the Indian Springfield. As one who has been riding Sport touring and DS bikes for many years I think the Indian handled quite well. I purchased my Springfield in May and took off on a 7000 mile, 6 week ride around the US. Though heavy it handles very well, I did a lot of scraping on Tail of the Dragon with it. I too thought the heat a little excessive but after the factory ECU Re flash while in Iowa it seemed a little cooler. Rode through hundreds of miles of torrential rain.. it never hiccuped once. It is a very comfortable traveling machine. Mississippi Great Basin Road is AWESOME. Idahosam

I have had 3 Harleys, road on a Indian. Haven't been back to Harley since. Just bought a 2020 Springfield Dark Horse. What a bike! It just feels, rides, and looks superior to the Harley in my opinion.

Couldn't agree more. I was astounded. When I test rode the 2022 Springfield I was like "Where have you been all my life?" 2,000 miles later, I'm still grinning and discovering the joy of the Springfield.

On the heat issue about the Indian. I noticed the heat when I had the stock air-cleaner. I updated to the Stage-1 air-cleaner, and noticed that the heat issue was decreased quite a bit. I think it was because it did not block as much air flowing around the motor. It was an unfair comparison with the Victory. The model they chose was not designed as a bagger or a touring bike, plus it cost quite a bit less than the Harley & Indian. If you want to tour on a Victory, then get the Cross Country model. The suspension on the Indian has more travel, thus giving it a more comfortable ride for touring, plus the all-leather seat on the Indian Springfield is f--king awesome.

I'm not sure i can completely agree with you guys on the Springfield's Handling. I'm riding an H-D Fat bob, and despite it's almost 700lbs of heft it handles excellent. I didn't do as many miles on the Springfield when i took out one for testing; but that bike, weighing nearly 200lbs more felt MUCH MUCH MUCH lighter and easier handling. perhaps not "sporty" but i instantly had complete confidence on twisty backroads, and the moment i got off the bike it was sold to the guy who took it out before me, and he had a relatively new RoadKing to trade in! Fit and Finish I feel like at least on my example may be a cut above as well over the H-D. That heritage; and yes definitely the harley feels like is has the history and competence honed into it. Still, to round this out you really should have selected the Victory Cross Country to put into this; only because a cruiser w/bags do NOT a touring bike make.

I rode all 3 bikes. The Gunner is in the wrong weight class here. I felt the Harley's motor was a little livelier but the Springfield beats the King in every other department. I have no problems with heat on my legs (I ride a Ducati). My choice would be the Big Red Indian even though I come from a 3 generation Harley family.

Reminds me of when I lived in Iowa for 9 years. All that rolling fields of corn and green. Living in AZ is a totally different experience.
@johnayres1220
@johnayres1220 7 лет назад
Not a fair comparison because that Victory is a completely different animal than the Road King & Springfield. The Road King and Springfield are a pretty close to being the same type of bike. I have a Springfield, and heat has not been an issue at all except at long stop signals when the temp is well into the nineties. I have the Stage One air-cleaner on my Springfield, and much more wind gets to my legs than the stock air-cleaner. The Indian gets more thumbs-ups and attention than any bike I've ever had, and that is cool.
@damnyankeeyankee6812
@damnyankeeyankee6812 8 лет назад
I bought a 2014 Chieftain when it came out - I favored it over the Road King for engine power and the amazing ride - plus it handles like a smaller bike. However, these 3 American motorcycle companies are making amazing - and dependable - bikes. Find one that fits you and join the 2 wheel revolution.
@johnayres2180

My question also. Actually the Victory Cross Country has a fairing, more horsepower, runs cooler, has a standard audio system, and other standard equipment not included on the Indian & Harley, yet it costs about the same or less. Actually the Victory (even though I ride a Springfield) is probably the best value in American made bikes.

Why is the gunner In This review ? Why not the vision , cross country , or magnum ???????

Why in the world did they choose a Gunner instead of a Cross Country or Magnum to represent Victory's "bagger"??? Makes no sense at all. Apples & oranges.

Maybe because Victory doesn't make the Cross Roads or Hard Ball anymore?????? www.victorymotorcycles.com/en-us/motorcycles BTW, that is what they say in their article too: "A perfect American Iron threeway would’ve been completed by a Victory Cross Roads if that model was still in production. Ironically, the success of Victory’s best-selling model, the Cross Country, victimized its platform-mate, the Cross Roads, which is no longer offered in the lineup. The Cross Country’s hard-shell fairing puts it in a slightly different category than the RK or Springfield, so we chose from Victory’s catalog a Gunner with items from its Solo Touring optional accessories: a Lock and Ride Mid-windscreen for $499.99 and a pair of black leather saddlebags for $539.99." www.motorcycle.com/shoot-outs/american-iron-bagger-shootout

love the positive coments made about Victory and Indian both backed by Polaris. From an old HD rider who has been riding a 1999 Victory v92c for the past 17 years, if HD does not wake up it will be losing it's 112 year old market share to a company that has been making motorcycles for barely 20 years.
@damnyankeeyankee6812
@damnyankeeyankee6812 8 лет назад
From another old rider: you are correct. Indian used to be THE motorcycle company before '53 and "Hardly Able, Son" (as HD was called in those days) was always 2nd fiddle. After the Germans and Brits drove the Indian brand into the ground during the 50's/60's and a couple well-intentioned American companies tried to get Indian back on its feet, Polaris has picked up the mantle. Today, the bulk of Indian bike sales are from HD riders who are switching to Indian. It'll be exciting to see how HD engineers respond...
@60fitandvegan89
@60fitandvegan89 8 лет назад
+Damnyankee Yankee I was out on my 1999 victory today, and as I observed the occasional HD rider I could not help but think of the many dollars these folks have spent on a company that does not give them consideration for their loyalty. As time goes on both will learn I hope.

I think the new Milwaukee 8 is their response to Indian's Thunderstroke. I can't count the number of used Harleys I've seen on the showroom floor at the Indian dealership since they started making the new Chiefs.

Odd to throw the Gunner into this mix. Usually people compare it to the HD soft tail slim. Think the magnum is supposed to be the direct competitor to these bikes. Personally I think I like the Indian's motor because of the smoothness.
@matthewjenkins4505
@matthewjenkins4505 7 лет назад
I just bought the Indian. I rented a couple in past and it is a Rolls Royce. I feel the heat from the engine. I tilt my legs a little to let the air go in between my leg and the motor. When it gets cold I will tilt my leg the other way and stay warm. This bike is sooooo smooth. I have ridden the HD King and to me there is no comparison. The HD feels like you think an HD would feel. You are more connected to the engine and the road. I bought the Indian because it is the most comfortable for me and a passenger. It looks amazing and I love being on it. Turning it around in my driveway is harder than my Sportster 48 or my Shadow. Everywhere else it is spectacular. My only complaint is the seat. I am 6'1". I wish more of my leg contacted the seat. Only my sits bones carry my weight so I find myself needing to shift around. Should you buy an Indian yes. I was treated very well and they want an ongoing relationship with you. I think Harley does the same. A great experience.

only Indian iv'e ridden is the scout so that experience means nothing here, but i have ridden Victorys cross country and a HD road king. Also got to try a gunner, and to echo %90 of the comments so far, the gunner is a great bike but doesn't belong here. Didnt get to take the road king and cross country on a 1000 mile tour but i liked everything about the big victory over the harley. I still agree though if you step back and look at Victory vs Indian vs Harley, You can tell harley has been doing this for over 100 years straight. The fit and finish on a harley blows the other 2 away. The indian name may be older than harley, but its new to polaris, they have yet to refine there new brand. This is why Victory is my favorite of the 3, they are the only one that doesn't have over 100 years of history so they can focus on what an american cruiser CAN be, as apposed to what people think an american cruiser SHOULD be.

I can't say I agree with you there. I just test rode some Indians yesterday. My personal favorite was the Springfield and it was absolutely stunning and a blast to ride! Everything was top notch with fantastic detail and did not seem lacking in any sense to me at all. It does have a different style than the HD, for sure, but that's a bit different than fit and finish. When you get into the Scout vs Sportster, I kinda feel the opposite. To me, the Scout seemed much more thought out and properly designed where the Sporty feels more like a "junior project" or just picking some random bits to throw on a cheap bike so they can say they have an 'entry level' bike. The sporty was not comfortable for me at all, even sitting on the showroom floor, where the Scout, while not being a big touring bike by any means, felt very comfortable and very well made for an 'entry level' bike.

why would you compare the gunner with baggers and not the victory cross country or magnum?
@johnayres1220
@johnayres1220 7 лет назад
The Cross-Country has a faring, stereo, and other standard equipment that the Road-King and Springfield doesn't. Victory used to build a Cross-Roads that's equipped like the Springfield & Road King, but dropped it. Because of pricing & quality, the Victory is a better value than both the Indian and Harley. I've had all of them, but I really like the handling, performance, and looks of my Springfield over the other brands.

WV is just as "serpentine" As California. I can agree that air cooled bikes are not much fun with hot weather in traffic. You guys keep harping on "twisties" on these bikes. Guys you just haven't learned to ride a cruiser, how to set up the curve and how to use the torque to make it flick from corner to corner. I have just as much fun in the mountains on my ultra classic as I did on any sport, standard or street and trail or adventure bike I have ever owned. From my klr 250 to my buell Ulysses. My vtx 1800 to my Yamaha raider, I owned and road them all in the winding mountain roads of West by God and I still liked them all. The ultra just has a better sound system and more storage.

The Gunnar was a very poor choice to compare to the other two bikes, it compares much closer to a Harley Dyna. But after seeing all these bikes in person the build quality and fit/ finish Harley has them beat hands down, the Victory and Indian/ Polaris bikes are too much like Japanese cruisers as far as controls and fit/ finish comes, cheesy and cheap looking plastic bits.

"Continues production for 100 years." True but with a bunch of ***** attached to it. Unfair tariffs and bribery are the only reason for that "continues". Also, not even close to being an 'American' motorcycle anymore. Over 60% of its parts from Asia, Mexico, and Europe is hardly 'American'. And let's not forget that as much as they want us to believe, they still are a nightmare for repairs which happen more often than any other bike in their respective classes. I'll never spend a dime of my money on another HD.
