I still can't believe Christian Bale was 25 when he made this. To have THAT level of talent so young is just baffling to me. I mean he was great in other films before this one (Empire of the Sun and Newsies in particular), but this film was the true example of his greatness.

Fun fact: When author Bret Easton Ellis was doing research for his American Psycho book, which the movie is based on, he befriended a small group of young investment bankers from Wall Street, pretty much a group of your typical yuppies from the '80s. They took him out to fancy restaurants, clubs, and diners, talked about who had the best haircut, the snazziest suit, the hottest girlfriend, and the most expensive house in the Hamptons. Not once did he ever see them work or spend time in their respective offices. And so this inspired him to rewrite the novel to be a black comedy/social commentary/satire and rewrote the main character, Patrick Bateman, into a serial killer.

Willem Dafoe acted every scene where he was questioning Bale’s character first as though he suspected him and second as he didn’t at all. They used takes from both styles, so it makes those scenes crazy to watch.

"But even after admitting this, there is no catharsis; my punishment continues to elude me, and I gain no deeper knowledge of myself. No new knowledge can be extracted from my telling. This confession has meant nothing." Christian Bale is a national treasure. After this movie, he became a leading man. Fun Fact: In 2013, Funny Or Die recreated the "Hip To Be Square" scene with Huey Lewis and 'Weird Al' Yankovic. Huey Lewis himself played the Patrick Bateman role and 'Weird Al' Yankovic was the Paul Allen role. In the scene, Lewis discusses the film, its controversial reception, Christian Bale's acting, and its effect on Bale's performance as Batman. Rather than listening to a song, Lewis pops in the American Psycho (2000) DVD, and at one point he points to the television while discussing Bale as Bale is shown pointing at the stereo discussing Lewis. It ends with Lewis killing Yankovic while the song "I Want A New Duck" (a parody of the Huey Lewis And The News song "I Want A New Drug") plays. Location Location Fact: The scene in which Patrick Bateman yells at the Asian woman at the laundromat was filmed at a small cleaners on Jarvis street in Toronto, Ontario. Much of the building scenes (his escape near the finale for example) were filmed in the financial district downtown. Distinguish Competition Fact: This film stars both Christian Bale and Jared Leto who each end up portraying DC characters. Bale would later go on to star as Bruce Wayne/Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy and Leto would later appear as The Joker in Suicide Squad (2016). Interestingly, Batman has a no killing policy while the Joker kills with no remorse, yet fans humorously point out how in this film, Batman kills the Joker.

One of the best adaptations of all time. In the novel, it's heavily alluded that ALL of the crimes are in his head. In the movie, they took a far more interesting route and made the murders real, and yet people were either too self-absorbed to notice ("Where did you get the overnight bag?") or actively covering it up in order to keep business going (the realtor at the end). That's a far more cutting critique of the vapidness of 80s corporate capitalism imo. One of the smartest satires of the new century.
@jamesoblivion
@jamesoblivion 2 года назад
I think that was actually a major theme of the book, which is ultimately about materialism and self absorption. In the book, the Wall Street characters get each other's names and identities confused far more often than in the movie, even, and no one cares about anything outside their own desires. It was basically Ellis saying that our society had become so sick, that as long as you were privileged, you were essentially untouchable. The book is very much about the decomposition of the American dream.
@chrisgaitan1915
@chrisgaitan1915 2 года назад
@@jamesoblivion Oh absolutely. Same theme, different story mechanics to convey them. My point is Harron and Turner's decision to make the murders more ambiguous (and most likely real) is imo an even better story tactic to play on those themes. I love the book too.

@@Flagsitta The cop was real but the director had Dafoe play the role differently for each take. Sometimes he's supposed to suspect Patrick, sometimes be totally oblivious. Thus, in the finished film, we're never quite sure what he's thinking. Absolutely brilliant direction. Mary Harron crushed this film.

One more piece of trivia: Christian Bale is from the UK. Before this movie, he wasn't very well known. He's also a method actor and was in the character of Patrick Bateman the entire time they were making the movie. People who had spent months with him making the movie were wondering why he was speaking with a British accent at the movie's premier party. They didn't know he was British 😂

Dude, I read the book last year (I'd seen the movie many times prior to reading it) and, good lord, I have never read something so disturbing in my life. I mean, my degree is in English literature (I almost went into psychology ,lol) and I'm an avid reader of all sorts of things anyway, but nothing hit like that book. You get several chapters that are very dry, describing gourmet foods, fashion, and music with a sort of cold, technical precision. Then everything shifts and the murders are described in the same way. The world seemed darker and dirtier to me in the days that followed, it was that hard to shake off how that book hit me and I will never read it again. And that's coming from someone who's interested in actual true crime stories (which of course this isn't). It does, however, show how good the author is, so I might try to read something else of his. That said, the movie is brilliantly done. Bale's acting was mind blowing. Things are left pretty open as to how much was in his mind and how much he actually did. Interestingly, DeFoe's character scenes were shot in 3 different ways. One as if he knew Bateman was guilty, one where he suspected it, and one where he had no idea. Then they spliced together these different scenes to add ambiguity to whether or not he actually suspects him. A brilliant choice of editing by the director. A funny tidbit from the book, Tom Cruise lives in Patrick's building. They run into each other in the elevator and have an awkward conversation, making it clear that Patrick is not at all impressed with him. It's later said that Bale based the mannerisms of Bateman on Cruise. Smiling and charismatic, but just dead and cold in the eyes. And people keep calling one another by the wrong names because they are so self centered and notice little about other people, but to be fair, they all work so hard to conform to similar images that it can be difficult to tell them apart. In all likelihood, he did do most of those horrible things, but being rich and powerful, a lot of things were just swept under the rug. Another great reaction!

I used to work in some corporate offices, in banking. We had a Jason Davis in sales, Jason Davies in Retentions and Jayce David in legal. All had blonde catalogue model hair and the same taste in suits (shiny and dark) and ties (shiny pastels). Management loved Jason, Jayce to his friends. He was at all the board meetings, was constantly in the know about everything and always hard at work. You guessed it. Everyone thought there was one guy. I was one of the only people who had to deal with all three on a daily basis. I delivered post and took their outgoings and prepped their flow documents and client side forms. My boss had a standing argument with me about there being three of them. They had a hell of a time with people insisting they'd been told details they hadn't. I left before the resolution but as I understand it, they eventually had to have a general meeting where they stood up infront of everyone to confirm there was more than one guy and to explain their different roles. Two weeks after, Davies was sacked and Davis was given a static promotion gaining Davies work load. It was apparently too much for the management to take. There is a uniformity in corporate culture that forces you to become a drone or forces you out. I've worked offices and I worked security. I'd rather be guarding someone, ready to tackle some crazy with a knife or a gun rather than work in corporate offices again. Atleast in security the job is about practicalities. Keep the charge safe. Move from A to B to C. Risks are real, threats are real but so is everything you need to interact with from gear to vehicles to sites, back up, escape routes. Working in an office? Popularity, buzzwords, backstabbing, personal politics... it's a nightmare hellscape. I have been stabbed. Hit with bottles, sticks, punched hundreds of times and even shot at. I have flashbacks to none of that. I do have nightmares about corporate office work and managerial bullying. The guy who stabbed me in the elbow, I was able to hit and kick back. There is no recourse against a manager who threatens your wages because you look too 'unhappy'. When they cancel your bonus for 'not going the extra mile' you can't kick them in the face and take your money back. When you take a beer bottle to the head and get a client out of danger they thank you. May even buy you a pizza or give you a tip. In an office, dealing with an extraordinarily rare event with style and aplomb just gets you written up next month for not repeating the feat. Fuck that life.

@@AnonEyeMouse Dude, that is so true. Well, all of it,lol. Like, I was a secretary for the Humanities department at a university. There was one professor that looked a bit similar to me, but she was at least 4 inches shorter, heavier, and wore skirts every day (I did not) and students would still call me Mrs. Whoever. It amused the shit out of me and I'd say "Hi" It really makes an argument for why people never recognized Clark Kent as Superman.. Before getting jobs as a secretary, I worked in the dish pit in restaurants, and that shit is wild. I hope to never go back. But administration jobs can be very similar to corporate jobs in the way you described. These days, I take online secretary or data entry jobs if I can find them. Working from home is awesome when I can find a good option. None of that office politics bs.

Ooo, ooo, and about this movie: I love how they fuck with the viewer because sometimes they can hear or see what he says and does, but other times they seem to have no clue. So we never really know when he's actually done something, or just thought about it. It's brilliant. They did a great job depicting the lifestyle of a genuine psychopath. The differences between them and sociopaths: the ability to blend in, the lust for corporate power and control, their abilities to set goals and finish them, their obsession with "looking the part", and their terrifying ability to go their whole lives without being found out until they snap and that psychopathic rage takes over. there are a lot of theories about the level of "reality" in this movie, but for me a good way to look at it is that it's about a man who's having a psychotic break, to the point where his internal fantasy life and actual real life have become so blurred in his head that he can't tell the difference as he's going through his days. that's a tricky thing to pull off on film without literally pointing out "this is fake" and "this is real," which accounts for some of the confusion, but i think mary harron was trying to put the audience in that headspace too. the real tell that it's all imagined by patrick is the shootout with the police, with the cop car exploding and whatnot. aside from the surreality of it all - even that late, manhattan streets are never that empty - there's no way that wouldn't have been all anyone in new york was talking about the next day.

The novel this is based on is an indictment of the Us in the 80's where the success is measured by money and everyone in Wall St is a version of everyone else. The constant confusion between names and characters is a ehicle to pinpoint that, each one is a clone of a clone of a clone, same haircut, same clothes, same values or lack of them. The murders happen but the system was so skewed that it was impossible for any rich, handsome, white man to fail or be caught.

I read the book once 32 years ago... and there are still scenes that make me shudder when I think of them. As horrific as the dog death is in the movie, the animal abuse in the book is even worse. :( Animal abuse notwithstanding, it's such an incredible movie and a phenomenal performance by one of the best actors in movies!

@@J_EOMReacts I hope that some of the scenes don't have the same effect on you as they did on me. There are some images that are burned into my mind all these years later because the animal violence and depravity was so vividly depicted. Some parts from James Patterson's book "Kiss the Girls" are equally as disturbing for the same reason. That movie is far less twisted than the book. I'm a fan of horror, but these two books left some psychological scars. (*shudder*)

There is also a book (and movie) called "The Rules of Attraction" by the same author (Bret Easton Ellis). The protagonist of that story is a character named Sean Bateman, who is Patrick Bateman's little brother. You would never know it because they don't interact except briefly in the "American Psycho" book (which was written and released before The Rules of Attraction). It's a good movie, too, and would probably be a good reaction.

They interact in Rules of Attraction as well. Patrick isn’t a serial killer in that book, though, since it was written prior to American Psycho. He also has a brief cameo or mention in Ellis’ following book, Glamorama, where it’s more or less confirmed that he really is a serial killer (albeit very implicitly).

It's very obvious that the cards are completely interchangeable from just a cursory look at them, but there are even DEEPER jokes about them - all of them have misspelled 'acquisitions', the fax and phone numbers all go to the same machine, none of them have a company logo on them... There is a video by an actual business card maker that is surprisingly in depth about them.
