New version here: • American Psycho - What...
Adding the script for being unclear. I'm working to fix this in the future, thanks for being patient:
1
There are people in this world who can’t exist without others. Not because they care about people, or need interaction in the nurturing sense, but because without other’s they can’t take from them. Some people are so narcissistic, they can’t develop anything resembling a personality unless they have a mirror image to try and best. When this leeched group is comprised of people with nothing but time and infinite resources, how does one top it?
2
By having more. By flaunting what they have, or what they are. By being better, for appearance sake, or not. By having more clout, in simplistic terms, gloating terms or superiority terms. By riding of positive emotions or understanding of inherently good things, by latching them to something that can be distanced. By killing those above them, eliminating the competition when it gets too far ahead. By preying on the weak, because they’re easy, and a cheap high. By looking out for #1 and #1 only.
3
All these things paint the picture of someone so naracissistic, unempathetic and unfeeling. Someone you would never want or have the desire to be, even with the positives… Having no point to life after achieving what many would claim to be their endgame, especially without having actually earned or worked for it, must be painful. This person would cake on more and more layers of something they originally weren’t(decency), weather the things they do to make this happen are real or ultimately fake. These things are just built up around a form the person wouldn’t be able to handle. So trying to push past it, to some new plateau of human desire is probably the only thing one can do. How do you make a mountain bigger? By pushing everything else to the earth.
4
And in the end? Well, there is no end, it will go on and on. Racing to a point that is forever in the distance. Unceasing cruelty, greed, spitefulness, and pointlessness. What would be the final point of excess. Thank you.
A thematic analysis of American Psycho. If you have a question please ask below and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you disagree with my interpretation please be polite and state your case with examples. This is a learning experience for everyone and I am happy to be proven incorrect if that be the case. Thank you!

You forgot the most important thing... The thing where the entire film is about. Most people are confused about the ending whether it was real or all in Patrick's head. But people are missing the point. Patrick thinks that the entire world evolves around him, so by making all the confessions, he thinks that he's going to get caught and for once he can't get away with it. This is not what it meant. The point is that just no one cares. Patrick isn't important and that is what he realizes.

The book was just a description-laden mirror being held up to American obsession with consumerism, vanity, excess, selfishness and narcissism, which began to blossom in the 1980s. I guess Bateman is a vehicle for that. He's more like an entity than a real person, a personification of the worst of human nature. A collage of people who we are taught to aspire to be, and to strive to be more like. For example, his "views" on music are ripped straight from Time Magazine critics rather than his own thought process (detailed more in the book). Sorry to go pseudo-psychology on it there!

Excellent point, pretty much sums up the yuppie culture of pre-recession times. Who is the real Bateman, behind that mask, in this case a very literal and metaphorical face mask.

+Marko Matovic I try my best to pack as much as possible in to as little time as possible. I like using excerpts instead of explaining a scene, so with something like American Psycho with so much going on each frame, it's hard for me to cut much. It's just damned if you do, damned if you don't.

One contradiction I noticed in your analysis is that you stated Patrick Bateman is an individual who is basically incapable of empathy and that his whole being is a well rehearsed act to fit in as a fellow human being. But at the end you stated he was the opposite of Reagan by projecting his evil and bottling up his decency. In my opinion, if Patrick was incapable of empathy, then he would have no decency to hide from the world. Plus you wouldn't really be able to call him evil since he doesn't actually experience remorse, which would leave him incapable of realizing a lot of the things he does are immoral. To call someone evil, that person would have to at least be aware that their actions are destructive and continue to perform them anyways. Do you disagree? Even still, I think your analysis was very accurate and articulate.

+William Hurst The author, Bret Easton Ellis, of the novel has stated that it wasn't all in his head b/c that would have made the whole novel trivial. Also Patrick Bateman appears in the novel Glamorama where he is seen with "strange stains" on the lapel of his Armani suit, which would further prove that he is real and does continue to kill.

I was always struck by how Caruthers didn't even flinch when Paul Allen called Bateman Halberstrand or mentioned Halberstrand's girlfriend. He was right next to them so it would have been impossible to not hear the conversation. So why didn't Caruthers ask Patrick "Why is Allen calling you Halberstrand? Have you told him you were Halberstrand? I mean, you two look nothing alike, but it will cause confusion somewhere along the line".

Didn't see the script the first three times I watched this. Could've saved some time. I liked your delivery, though I was confused by the breaks between clips. It was really nice to see film analysis done with style. You let the clips breathe and reminded me how much I love this movie. I'm really tired of watching clowns rant about shitty movies from 30 years ago and genuine film nerds taking me to school over every single detail of the films I love until I am bored. If I had to guess, you're not trying to blow anybodies mind with these analyses or go in depth. If it was to make a stylish video with your silky broadcasting voice, it succeeded. The script is pithy, concise, and extremely easy to follow. I couldn't have said it better myself and I've read this book many times. Im kind of somewhere between go for more clarity or keep going with this cutup voice over technique. Either way finding this channel made my night.

They behave like serious men but when the doors are closed they turn into Patrick Bateman, Gordon Geko or the guy from Wolf of Wallstreet. Well, the movies are little bit over the top but it goes in that direction

I've read the book and seen the movie several times and still have no clue if Bateman did all that crazy shit or just imagined it.

Well, I believe the life style has been born into made him insane. But what I got from it was in a more subtle hidden message. Even though he personally did not physically kill anyone, him working in wall street, is only a representation of what wall street does. His participation only helps the machine, finally becoming ok with what he does. Which is only imaginary. Only digits on a computer screen that are changed at random, that affect billions of people. with the liking of the super powerful and wealthy. He is only a pawn, which accepts the materialism and emptiness, finally giving up the will to be human. Losing the last strand of care for man.

My favorite aspect to the film are the "fans of this movie" who never realized he actually never murdered anyone to begin with.

so it all boils down to patrick being a cold-blooded, greedy, apathetic psychopath who just isn't ever satisfied with anything?

Ironically Bateman although portrayed as a monster, was actually the most human of all of them. He was tortured in a surrounding hell by materialistic colleagues, an unpassionate girlfriend, no wonder he was tormented and suffered the deepest petty dilutions. Only Jean cared about him. Her exceptional kindness he recognized and it spared her life. As screwed up as Bateman was, at least he felt something inside. Opposed to everyone he worked with.

@ 6:45 The identical hallways are the lobby's of the former World Trade Towers. Bateman exits the first building, and runs immediately to the adjacent towers lobby.

There was a deleted scene where they're clubbing and Timothy realizes he can't go on like this. Which could explain when they're at the bar at the end of the film...

+LaDracul Yeah, in the book, Price (Price in the book, Bryce in the movie) leaving is a pretty big deal, he just disappears and shows up at the end with some kind of deeper understanding.. a little more grounded and less jaded. Who knows what he was up to, but whatever he did probably could've helped Bateman as well.

I'm interested in how you addressed the debate on whether or not Bateman's acts are fantasy or reality. I think, although it's obviously an important thing to consider, it's almost just a step to asking the bigger questions about the film. I get the impression that Bateman desires conflict to the point where he creates this fantasy to fuel it - with the goal of giving his life, now seemingly peaked, any degree of meaning. I would also argue this comes out of a subconscious desire to be punished for his crimes (the murders, but also the crime of being a vapid consumer) and sort of reflects not just the yuppie society of the 80's but also the year the movie came out in 2000. With the Cold War over it seemed that the West had won and there was talk of an 'end of history' Jean Baudrillard talked about how means had come to justify ends that did not exist - society, like Bateman, had hit the plateau and lost conflict/meaning. Maybe this is a lot of waffling but I wonder if you think this reading has any merit.

+Crimea Just realized I never responded to this, sorry for the lateness . Personally I lean toward everything being fake based on the evidence I give in the video. I feel Patrick is far more pathetic for imagining everything or getting it out through drawings. Like I say in the video though, if everything is real or fake, the fact remains that he is trying to top everyone around him. He is at a level of success that other's devote their entire lives to, and since he is doing nothing/did nothing to accomplish it, he is and desires nothing. His topping of those around him or taking out that pain in the worst ways imaginable is all that's left to do in his mind.

+What it all Meant Isn't this troubled distinction between fantasy and relaity comming out of the origins of the movie/book. I mean Film Noir -> movie is one big nightmare. Also film noir tends to be critic of the society (and that happens here clearly).
