You have a deep rabbit hole here: The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, Siouxie and the Banshee’s, The Church. So much of the music of the mid to late 80’s. Pop melodies, dark lyrics, unlike anything that came before it.
Close To Me. Pictures Of You. Friday I’m in love. Love song…all great songs by The Cure. Depeche Mode are another amazing band 80s Gothic Rock/New Romantic/New Wave…love itttt!!
Robert Smith is the voice of most of my adolescence. I dearly love The Cure. 80’s was such a great and diverse time for music and allowed you to fall in love with so many genres.
The Cure are one of the so many great bands from the UK in the 1980s... Simple minds, Duran Duran, Madness, Spandau Ballet, Depeche Mode, Wham, Tears for Fears, The Police, Eurythmics, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Genesis, Culture Club, Queen and many more......
All time favorite band. Just Like Heaven is the most amazing purely written pop song. It just lands in a way that's hard to describe. The only band where I can listen to their entire catalog and not skip a song.
This was their first big hit, off of their 1979 debut album "Three Imaginary Boys"... During this time, they were very much inspired by punk, especially by a band called "The Buzzcocks". By the time their 2nd album "Seventeen Seconds" came around just a year later in 1980, they had gone for a totally different, Goth Rock sound that they are known and loved for... They are often regarded as "The Grandfathers" of the Goth Rock genre. A song that was featured on that 2nd album called "A Forest" became a staple of the genre. They experimented with a more Synth focused, "New wave" sound later on in their career and they did wonders with that too. Great band all round, still active today, 45 years later and they still sound great!
I was a huge Cure fan, saw them in concert, 1990s… Big hits were Fascination Street, Love Cats, Friday…. PS, my son and I are huge Ren fans and I love how you’ve opened up so many hearts to Ren’s genius and compassion!
The Cure are one of those bands you've heard a thousand times and never known until you hit those songs because..... movies, tv, adverts, games, at the grocery overhead, restaurants..... 40+ years of work across genres and Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. You've heard the lead singer's voice a Lot probably. They've had multiple major hits. And dead on - this was from their first, (primarily) post-punk genre album. I fell in love with The Cure before I knew who they were, just heard some of their hits in my early teens and later found out their name and started diving into albums alone and with friends. 30 years later and just did my 4th concert last year (in which, not for the first time I saw them, they played for about 3hrs). Oh, and they've some SOLID "put the songs on when you wanna wallow in sadness and self-pity over something for a while" songs lol. If I need a good bit of catharsis every few years I'll get miserable and put on the Disintegration album. Between the mix of how sad and how beautiful different songs are... quality let your hair down and let it out music lol. They also a huge amount of upbeat and fun and funky and this and that. Like said, 40+ years across genres. I've only just found your channel and am jumping around to different reactions you've done and am really enjoying them! Let me tell you, your reaction to Tool's The Pot was a breath of fresh air compared to the, let's phrase it "not as thoughtful", more common takes one sees. Would love to see you do more The Cure. A not-so-listened to one that I'd suggest: Jupiter Crash (no spoilers to the song but a helpful reference if you don't remember back to then: the name comes in connection to comet Levy hitting Jupiter around when it was written) Some things you may end up recognizing: Just Like Heaven, Lovesong, Fascination Street, Lovecats, Friday I'm in Love. Among personal favorites: Disintegration, From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, A Forest, Letter to Elise (also rarely checked out by folks... overlooked imo), Let's Go to Bed Okay, that was a novel. Apologies for verbosity but, yeah, one of my fave bands. Another mentioned Depeche Mode - have to go look to see if you've reacted to them. If not, another 40+ year band that is so worth the dive and varies genres while staying themselves.
On their lone tour a few years back, Temple of the Dog covered Fascination Street - and it was like my late teens & early 20s just melted into one big time warp goo and it was SO damn lovely hearing Chris Cornell sing it.
You've probably heard some Cure songs and never realized. Their biggest hit is Just Like Heaven which you have to listen to; Lovesong also got a lot of radio play; Close To Me was always a club favorite; Fascination Street is like a goth club anthem; Lullaby is dark; In Between Days is more upbeat.
British band The Cure always was reinventing itself and its sound - pretty sure frontman & leader Robert Smith is the only band member who has remained a constant. I think when their first album came out in ‘79, they were a trio. The debut album had one version released in the UK & another in the US, with different titles, album covers & slightly different song selections (seems like “Boys Don’t Cry was only on the US version? All the other songs on the debut albums are edgier & darker). At times they’ve been a 4-piece, and a 5-piece. Their sophomore album was very ambient, somber & moody and the next two downright dark - so that trilogy of albums left many with the mistaken impression they are a goth band. But by the early to mid-‘80s they were making some seriously giddy synth pop - Smith said his writing reflects the ups & downs of his life. By around 1989 or ‘90, they released what many consider their masterpiece album, “Disintegration,” which is back to being a bit on the dark side. I consider them Alternative Rock, but when they first emerged on the scene they were consider Post-Punk/New Wave. I think Smith resisted trying to be a mainstream, commercial, hit-making band, yet they still had big hits; so they kind of straddle the underground/cult label with the mainstream category and are still very much an international band as far as their audiences go. As far as I can tell, they’ve never stopped playing big arenas and stadiums, so they’re not one of those bands that has moved from the big time to playing medium-sized cities (which means I may never get to see them live). Robert Smith’s is the voice you hear on their songs. To appreciate his song-writing genius, listen to his sparse, angst-ridden “10:15 Saturday Night” and realize a teenager wrote this (he was 19 when it came out on the debut albums, plus they had recorded it a year earlier for the BBC Peel Sessions, which you can find on CD). Smith is not only a great songwriter and vocalist but an underrated guitar player. The Cure was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. After 4 decades or so, their catalog is pretty massive, you might start with their one (that I know of) greatest hits album, 2 “best of” CDs that don’t have”best of” in their titles, or stream their Billboard hit singles to get a feel for them. They don’t have just one sound. Their darker songs don’t depress me - they validate how I feel (the rare, deep album cut “The Upstairs Room” is an example). The also have a lot of upbeat songs - their pop masterpiece “The Lovecats” for instance” - and some of the most magical romantic songs: “Lovesong,” “A Night Like This” and “Just Like Heaven” to name a few. It’s a toss up whether The Cure is my favorite band or The Doors. Both bands’ frontmen are genius lyricists/songwriters because their words are so poetic and meaningful and their melodies so emotional. Both were counterculture rebels (but a decade or so apart, & from different countries). Morrison and Smith were both charismatic & hot, though Smith is more reserved. Both bands were full of extremely talented musicians. I guess those are some of the common denominators of why these 2 bands are my favorites. Addendum: The Cure did a great cover of The Doors’ “Hello, I Love You.”
I Love The Cure, i still have my Boys Don't Cry T-shirt from when i was a kid, i had it on the other week and my daughter said "who wears a top wirh Edward Scissorhands on at your age" absolute cheek of it. Great band, Pictures Of You by them is my favourite ❤ looking forward to your reaction.
Love that you reacted to The Cure! Four decades of awesomeness, plenty to choose from if you decide to go down this rabbit hole, which I hope you do. Robert Smith's voice, lead vocals of The Cure, is pretty distinct, you may of heard it in passing in movies or tv shows...the first movie that comes to mind is, "The Crow" featuring the late Brandon Lee, they did a song called "Burn" for the soundtrack. The Cure was a staple growing up in the 80's, we called it "Goth" or "New Wave". Some other fantastic bands from that genre: The Smiths, Duran Duran, Blondie, Joy Division, New Order, Depeche Mode, Soft Cell, and Echo & the Bunnymen. Enjoyed the reaction BP!! Thank you!
Love The Cure! So many amazing songs! Just like heaven was really popular, and could be the song you've heard from them. Robert Smith is an Iconic vocalist and front man! I absolutely love and respect how he has kept his same style and hair as he has aged, even when most say he should change! 🥰♥
😄 lovin' your story man... Aussie girl here, the 60's my childhood, the 70's my teen years, the 80's hit my 20's girls going strong👩🎤 Man the plethora of music genres we lived & breathed! I love my heavy stuff but music that brings Joy just because... it's Fun, 💛 yeah
This video is from the 80’s. It is a single from their album. The group is still together today. The real group are the shadows. Their biggest song in the US chart is Just Like Heaven. It is classified as alternative rock.
I was a kid listening to The Cure. My big brother was a huge fan. I was a little kid of the 80's, who knew who The Cure was and when they were on tour. I'm a huge fan now ✌️💙🎵 Check out the tune Pictures Of You. I'm in love with that song right now ✌️💙🎵
Great choice, ❤ Black Pegasus ❤, ask me stuff, I know a thing or three by The Cure. People remember Fridays I'm in Love by The Cure. The iconic 1980s song is A Forest. The Cure meant to cure the music industry, so each song should be a work of art. Each lyric is a poem with a history and a meaning. Their capability for orchestration grew through the decades, but has been called perfect every so often. No sound of a song is much like another, except in their album progression of the 18 song Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me album (1987) where they made of a point of handing over from one song to the next. The song you are listening to is one of their very early successes. They are still alive and touring. 13 albums in the time from 1979 through 2008. You will love the song "Lullaby". Not getting the girl? See "A Forest". Or with the strangest twist, off the children's novel of the same name: "Charlotte Sometimes".
You are my new hero! I came to educate and got beaten to the punch! ❤❤❤❤ I am one of many obsessed girls who went by Charlotte Sometimes when writing letters to friends in class 🙄🤣
As someone who has always loved The Cure, watching your face while you listen, and getting into the song makes my heart so happy. Too many people are missing out on the feelings their music gives...Thank you!
If you have seen the movie ' The Crow', then you have heard The Cure. They contributed to the soundtrack. Thanks for reacting to them. This brought me back to my younger years.
This is so weird! I was driving home tonight and started thinking about the best concerts I've been to. Weezer, Van Halen, Tedeshi Trucks Band and The Cure. When I got to The Cure, I thought BP should react to them. Check the channel and BOOM. LOL 😂 One of my favorite bands from the 80s! New Wave back in the day. Considered one of the bands that "crested" Emo. Robert Smith (singer) is awesome!
So technically, this is new wave popular music of the early 1980s. The people who listen to this at the time dressed all in black with capes and frilly shirts and brooches and stuff they called themselves Goth. This is goth music this band is quintessentially goth.
2 tunes that come to mind are " lullaby " and " Friday I'm in love " from the cure both with different jibes. Keep up your great content guyz , awesome freestyles.
When I was 12 my beautiful mother died of cancer... being a boy I was not allowed to cry. I had to run a bath and cry under water...it crushed my heart. I got out the bath and pretended everything was fine. You don't understand what it means to be male... boys don't cry. :/
I love love the Cure. Fascination Street and Just like Heaven, Let's go to Bed , Same deep water as you , Pictures of you , letters to Elise, Cut here , lullaby Lovesong . They do a great mash up with Korn. The Cures song In-between Days which I love and Korn make me bad I love as well. It's on Korn's unplugged. Since you love live music you have to watch it. The Cure has so many good songs. He's voice is unique I ❤ Robert Smiths voice.
The Cure - Friday I'm In Love, or "Burn" - off the The Crow Soundtrack is probably what you are thinking of. Those 2 songs blew up big in the 90's. However I think "Plainsong" of the Album Disintegration is one of their better ones as well.
This version is a re-recording of one of their first singles released to promote their first singles collection. Here in the UK they are a national treasure. Yes, they have had a couple if US hits but if any band can be described as the worlds biggest cult band, its a coin toss between The Cure and Depeche Mode. Not all their songs are like this, they started pop-punk/post punk but there is psychedelic influences creeping in along the way, they helped invent 'goth' along the way, they like to bring things in and mess around with them. Yet always they sound like The Cure. Wrap your ears around their 2 singles collections "Standing on a Beach: The Singles" and "Galore: The Singles 1987-1997". to get a good taste of what they are about.
They had a bunch of hits. They were considered the world biggest cult band. This record is kind of pop punk. They change every record. Nerf Herder is fun. Missed seeing Nerf Herder multiple times, but I have seen the Cure 6 or 7 times. Check out their B sides.
friday im in love, close to me, love song, inbetween days, pictures of you and lullaby are my favs , also they did songs on the soundtrack for The Crow movie Burn is the name of the main one I think
If you are doing The cure , do Burn , it’s such a good song and it was written for a movie called The Crow, which was Brandon Lee’s last film as he was unfortunately shot and wounded whilst filming which caused his death , but the song is so catchy highly recommended it. 😊
One of the best groups of ALL TIME. Since 1980 until 2024 theyre even better now. The new material is some of their best they did have a big hiatus putting out albums. Friday Im in love and lovesong are the big notable songs.
The Cure was underground to me, sometimes a song or two would make the airwaves but they felt underground to me. Very influential as well. One of my favorite Rock en Español bands influenced by The Cure is Caifanes. Their stuff is in Spanish but great music as well.
Glad that your first reaction is early Cure so you can see how they evolve as you (hopefully) do more! My first exposure was the album 'Faith' (1981), it's very melancholy verging on dark and I loved it! Over time they did lighten up and produced some great upbeat songs - 'Love cats', 'Just like heaven', 'Friday I'm in love'. A great band well worth exploring further. Cheers.
I've always been a Metal Head, but in high school in the 80's my best friend Dion was into this music (we called it New Wave). So this is VERY nostalgic for me, and I'm here for it! I had a Cure T-shirt which had their faces in a bunch of weird colors, when my Grandpa saw it he said, "If that's the cure, I'd hate to see the disease" 🤣 "Killing an Arab" is probably my favorite Cure song!
Oh my goodness - love you for this, The Cure's sound is unmistakable and Robert Smith (the singer) is an incredible story teller - well done you sir 🙃 They played at Glastonbury in 2016 - if you have time, check out their performance of 'Burn'. This has been a great start to my day, thank you
D U D E You've done it. You've found my absolute all time favoritest favorite. Please, I BEG YOU, do Charlotte Sometimes. Like Killing An Arab, it's based on a book. It's weird AF, it's... My old alter ego, when I needed one... I used to dress like Robert, down to the lipstick tweak on the bottom right. I loved him so much. I had the walk sized poster from this song, it's ICONIC; image search the title, you'll find it. It's very 80s. I've loved these guys for over 30 years, ever since I was a precious little Baby Bat.🖤🖤🖤🎼🎵🎼🎵💀💀🦇🦇🎶🎶🎶🦇🦇🦇🦇☠️ For visual fun: Why Can't I Be You, Caterpillar Girl, or Inbetween Days.
Another band that was in the same vein is The Smiths. I recommend the song "There is a Light that never goes out." There is no official video, but there many videos that play the studio version. Looking forward to your reaction.
I’m loving this trip down memory lane. The Cure were my top 2 through all my teens and twenties. Bowie was the other. Songs I recommend- Love Cats, Hot, hot hot, Caterpillar, Just like heaven, Love Song … I’m so surprised you like them. Ren got me here but your latest reactions to the musical greats are wonderful. Cheers from Aussie 🫶🏼🌻🇵🇸
Oh, thank you for including the church on that. Yes definitely echo in the bunny man yes definitely souxsie in the banshees.. The church is so underrated by review channels. I can't believe more people aren't just gushing about the church
Their best and most epic song which is always high ranked in many all time charts is the song A Forrest. there is a live version to find. Now you are into the 80's Brittisch pop music take also a dive into Madness with songs like Our house and night boat to Cairo
