Grime gets its influence from Garage and House music in the early 00's. So big in raves but in the UK sometimes rave can get used for any party not necessarily a EDM rave. As grime developed more recently you hear some of the beats sound more like traditional rap beats. P money has been in the game for a minute and a mad amount of influence some of his music stretching into the dubstep/dnb space

Grime has no real link or relationship to EDM at all. It’s more like the rap genre’s most punk sub genre. The computer game-like sounds/samples that define a lot of the sound (especially the earlier Grime) are a result of the types of default sounds available on the early DIY music production apps like Fruity Loops that were popular with kids in the early 2000s. Kids passed around cracked copies these music software apps, taught themselves how to use them, with no musical knowledge whatsoever. These are the days before RU-vid etc, if you couldn’t afford music lessons, there was no easy way to access information. So, like punk, these kids just made music - made the beats, they often sounded harsh on the ear and would break a lot of musical ‘rules’ due to this lack of knowledge and training. And that is a key element of why Grime developed the sound it did. There’s a reason Stormzy wrote a song called Wiley Flow. Wiley makes beats as well as raps and many of his early beats - particularly Eskimo - defined the genre. Pretty much every MC who has ever touched Grime has paid homage to Wiley for this. And of course, Wiley’s flows are perfection on top of these true Grime beats… they are undeniable. (Although in this one I have got to give JME the win). Grime, due to its historical use as the genre where MCs would go to pirate radio stations and clash/compete live on the mic for the best bars and flows, breeds top tier rappers. I find it the most exciting and compelling modern genre of rap by some distance. If you really want to understand more about why it is so damn good, you better put the hours in and do your research 😅 It’s so worth it - trust me. Grime sounded odd and harsh on the ears to us UK fans at first too, but when you’re ears level up to what Grime is, you will want more and more of it. It’s my favourite music genre of any, now - period. Next, try some more Wiley.
