Black adder goes 4th was my favoirite , in the 1980s- 1994 there was a comedy show Called allo allo a 2nd World war ocupied france , with french resistance fighers germans it was light hearted but also filled with realisme as one could get shot blown up etc . Its considered one of the greatest comedies ever to be made.

Hi Connor, General Melchett offers to give George leave to watch the boat race. The University Boat Race is held every year since the 1820s, between Oxford and Cambridge Universities, held on the Thames in London. The inside joke is that Hugh Laurie has actually competed in it.

The biggest problem with the Western Front in WW1 was that, even though everyone in the army including the top brass had started to realise that the only viable option was to hold what ground they could and try to outlast the enemy (war of attrition), the general public didn't want to keep waiting for the war to end without winning battles and pressured the government to order the army to make some kind of effort to push the Germans back.

The term "darling" in the UK is an old term of endearment couples would use.......it cracks me up even today at the genius of a simple gag (calling Melchett's staff officer Captain Darling) which never, ever, gets tired throughout the entire 4th series.

Conner, black adder goes forth was released in 1989 but a year earlier in 1988 a song called "this womans work" by kate Bush was released, Tim McInnerny who plays captain darling featured in the songs video as kate Bush's love interest, it's where the constant Darling jokes come from they are winding up and taking the absolute piss out of the actor because of some of the songs lyrics, if you watch the video you will get the joke..

Not so much planes (recon sparingly), but certainly machine guns and tanks. The broader point is true that technological advances in warfare superseded strategical advances.
@bak-unin
@bak-unin Год назад
When the Americans entered the war in 1917 and made their first attacks in 1918 they got slaughtered because they wouldnt listen and learn from the experiences of the British and French who'd been at it for over 3 years. The Lions led by Donkeys idea has been reassessed by modern historians who point out that many generals attempted new methods to minimise casualties but the technology wasn't as accurate and as effective as they hoped. Each new technology turned out to be just as problematic as the previous and often created as many problems for the users as the recipients.

Brilliant.....except for one tiny little problem - there were no minefields during WW1; barbed wire and booby traps yes, but no minefields, as they hadn't been invented! There were of course many mines, loaded with tons of explosives - you can still see some of them today. Apart from that little oops, the series was brilliant.

In World War 1 they had tanks and planes for the 1st time and much bigger weapons and guns but the generals and the field marshals were all from times gone by and still wanted to employ old methods for example calvery charge. The General in Blackadder has no regard for human life, no regard for the regular soldier. His only interest is in self preservation.
@MrNikolidas
@MrNikolidas Год назад
I don't think it's even self-preservation - he's depicted as a total airhead who was given the position of General purely because of social status. Like Field Marshal Haig, he just sees soldiers as pieces on a chessboard to be moved and sacrificed at will and according to, as you rightly said, antiquated warfare tactics, which were taught at various prestigous academies like Sandhurst to the social elite who had never even set foot on a battlefield before. It's not that they want to preserve themselves, per se, they just didn't understand the modern realities of war that that had just crept up on them and slapped them in the face.
@leehallam9365
@leehallam9365 Год назад
Great reaction Conor. As for what you were saying at the end, technology dictates how wars are fought, and WW1 was dominated by the machine gun and long range artillary. The Blackadder view of the Generals as butchers and idiots isn't really fair, the development of trench warfare was really the only response at the time. At the start they quickly realised that the cavalry charge wasn't going to work anymore, my grandfather joined the cavalry at the start, a decision that may have saved him as he spent the war in Egypt and India. It was the development of the Tank right at the end that made trenches redundant, in time for the next war.

Oh, please. That nonsense stems from the 1960s. No-one before then throught that was the case and no serious historian does now. More people (most of them ex-soldiers) attended Haig's funeral than did Churchill's. A lazy and inaccurate trope.
@allenwilliams1306

Trench warfare was not entirely new: the American Civil War was probably the first when it figured. However, the First World War on the Western Front was the first ever in which (from late 1914 to early 1918) that was it: no other form of combat was even possible on the ground. It took some time for those in charge to learn how to deal with it. Tactics were developed. The British developed tanks and co-ordinated air force and ground attacks to make progress by means of small bites of enemy territory; the Germans developed concrete fortifications, poison gas and storm-troopers; the French, well, the French just continued to be French, brave, stupid, and/or mutinous, and die in great numbers. The USA arrived too late to be of any use except introduce “Spanish Flu” and kill more of their allies than the Germans. It takes time for commanders to learn new tricks.
@robertstallard7836
@robertstallard7836 Год назад
@@allenwilliams1306 Well said. I will say for the French, though, that they pioneered advances in the tactical use of the rifle-grenade, which then became an important element of the four-section platoon level tactics of SS143 onward.
