Hedgehog rescues are saying we should feed hedgehogs all year round now because they’re starving to death and on the brink of extinction. 😢They need about 20 wild gardens a night to get enough food but can’t get through fencing, so they tell us to put a hole about the size of a CD in our fences to make a hedgehog highway to allow them to roam. They tell us to feed complete cat food with meat as the top ingredient as they don’t digest cereal and not wet food as that encourages flies to lay maggots and then they get in the hedgehogs eyes and ears. Poor things.

Interesting questions around 17 minutes in... to let species go extinct. I studied under a wildlife documentary maker, who chaired an ethics committee. Their approach was just to document and not to intervene in what they were observing. Let nature do what it does, was the approach. If you intervene to save a human from a crocodile, why wouldn't you intervene to save a fly from a reptile? We put different values on different species. Who decides which species are worth saving? Could saving a fungus be worth more than saving a panda? Maybe it produces a pharmaceutically useful chemical, while the panda is just cute?

Havjng damaged the habitat of every species on the planet, I'd say we owe them help. If we can save them, we should. Look at it this way, starvation is natural too, so if you were starving, would you want people to offer you food or not?

It's nice - almost Canadian - of you to apologize for various things as often as you do in your videos, but it's really not necessary. In terms of human caused extinctions, most humans live outside of nature and aren’t a part of the ecosystem, but still negatively affect it. I.e. it isn’t a “natural” process in how modern humans are causing extinctions. Even just when it comes to timescale, extinctions don’t naturally happen at the rate that they’ve happened due to relatively recent human activity. Ecosystems have a natural/gradual selection process over a very long period of time. Within the last few hundred years the extinction rate has spiked to, at the very least, 100x greater than the regular extinction rate at any other time in history (bar mass extinction events)

I like the fact that the maps use the local language. Seals are fairly safe from predators in the UK. There are occasional visiting sharks and orca around Cornwall, but most of the UK's orca population is around Scotland. Birds navigate with a magnetic sense, but are far better judges of north/south than east/west, so if they're blown across the world rather than up or down, they can get confused. And sea urchins are eaten as a delicacy in some cultures (such as the Māori food kina).

@Shoomer1988 10 месяцев назад
Not really true. There are over 800 definitions of a 'forest' used around the world but the UK doesn't have a definition. Instead we use 'woodland' which is an area under stands of trees with a canopy cover of at least 20%. (about 13% of Britain's land). So without a clear UK meaning of what a forest is, if we call it a forest then it's a forest.
@zeeox
@zeeox 10 месяцев назад
Not sure what definition you're using there? The word 'forest' in an ordinary modern sense obviously refers to an area of wooded land, sure, but the original medieval word was actually akin to a ‘preserve’, i.e. land that's legally kept for specific purposes, like royal hunting. So ‘forests’ were big areas able to support species likes wolves and deer for game hunting. It's why you'll sometimes find areas on an OS map labelled as forests but that have very little to no actual trees (such as in Exmoor). They also include other habitats such as heath, grassland and farmland... all still under the classed definition of 'forest'. More recently, 'woodland' has become a defacto word for land covered with trees and vegetation of course, but although a 'wood' tends to smaller than the modern 'forest' we also now associate with trees, I'm not sure there is an agreed or set numeric division between the two in the UK. And such semantics may differ in other English speaking nations elsewhere.

Great White sharks are not yet recorded around the UK - officially. There have been a few potential large shark sightings in the south west of the UK and a few shark bites to seals - but nothing that can be proved to be Great Whites. Ecologically we should get Great Whites in the UK - but populations in the Mediterranean and off the Spanish coast do not travel far enough north to reach us - however temperatures and prey species are not stopping them if they tried to get here. We do get Orca but generally they do not attack seals in European waters - and only eat fish. Orca in other regions do take seals - but the two populations appear to live separate lives.

Lovely video. About "natural extinction" , my opinion in as short a way as I can type is that who is to say that humans don't / won't have a hand in future animal extinction? The way the planet is going according to some, ( re climate change), surely then it is because of humans in certain circumstances. Just my thoughts. ✌

You can visit the bigger of the island to see the monasteries, so i guess the visitors stop the birds from making a full-time home there.

most extinctions are the result of human activity, all life on earth except human life, live within the frame work of nature it's self, only humans since their arrival in the British isles have changed the habitat in such extreme ways, deforestation and farming, pollution and over fishing, human activity that impacts all other life forms, we live beyond the boundaries of nature and at a cost to nature, deforestation and farming has existed here for thousands of years, extinction of the Bear, the Wolf, Wild Boar, Elk, and Beaver all the result of human interference, there are so many if's but's and maybe's ,question now too late to be answered, the only question is how do we put it right knowing we can not turn back time!

We have never had a confirmed great white sighting in the British Isles. The furthest north one has been verified is the bay of Biscay in the 90s. Orcas are more common around Northern Scotland but have been spotted all over Britain at various times.

Ireland 🇮🇪 is not a British Isle/Island. This is an outdated Geographical term when referring to Ireland. I'm afraid you only have the UK. The British lost Ireland 🇮🇪 in 1922.
@maxisussex
@maxisussex 10 месяцев назад
@@condorone1501 It is not an outdated term in the UK, it is still used. It is also a geographic term and has no political connection. It certainly is not a claim of any sort, truthfully most British people forget Ireland is even there but the same is probably true for the channel islands.
@condorone1501
@condorone1501 10 месяцев назад
@maxisussex The term is no longer used by the UK Government since the signing of the Good Friday agreement. It's an incorrect geographical term that is still used by the British. Geographically Ireland 🇮🇪 is a European Island not a British Island. Ireland lies on the European continental shelf not the British continental shelf. The Continent is Europe not Britain. Britain is simply an Island just like Ireland. There is absolutely no justification in Calling Ireland a British Isle Geographically. Ireland 🇮🇪 can no longer be called a British Isle/Island since regaining its Independence and Territorial waters in 1922. It really does come down to Geography and Logic.

Yes we have, one was spotted 9miles off the coast of Guernsey last summer. Which is in the British Isles. And they’re heading farther north as our seas are warming up.
@maxisussex

I am talking about confirmed sightings, the further north with a confirmed sighting is the bay of Biscay. Lots of people claim to see great whites but only confirmed sightings count. @@dannjp75
